Minor Athletics on vacation -- Minor League Dump
With some of our minor league affiliates in all-star break, my brother and I decided to go on vacation for the Independence Day weekend. We'll update you with box scores starting Monday.
In a small update, Weeks went 0-4, with 2 K in Wednesday game against San Jose, ending his 24 game on base streak. It will be interesting to see how Weeks responds to this small (very small) drought at the plate. In Sac news, (I said Sac...) Simmons had an excellent start, going a complete game allowing one earned and striking out three. It would be nice to see him build off this performance over the next few starts.
If anyone has any updates over the weekend, whether news or stats, please share. Take care all and enjoy the sun!

Corey Wimberley almost ready to come back
On last night’s radio broadcast of the RockHounds game, it was mentioned that Corey Wimberley will return to active status soon. He has been out with a broken hand, I think. They said he might play in some rookie league games in Arizona for a short rehab, but all that had not been decided yet.
Woo-Hoo! I’m excited. With both Coreys back at Midland, look out!

Where would they play him?
CF is Brown, 2b Valdez, 3b Cardenas, SS is Horton? They cant promote him because of the AAAA filler at the AAA level that need to be brought up to the bigs to see if they can hack it or put out to pasture.

Nice to see him getting back
The interesting thing is finding a place for him to play. Midland is stacked with Horton at SS, Valdez at 2B and a full Of of Gilbert, Brown, Sulentic, and Spencer. I guess Horton, Valdez, and Gilbert aren’t really prospects at this point, but they’re playing well and are probably equal to Wimberley in prospect status.

horton
why isn’t horton a prospect? he’s younger than donaldson and spencer, and plays a premium position. is his hitting that bad? his numbers seem at least interesting…

Prospect is kind of a nebulous term
Horton still has a chance to make it but I would put him behind Pennington as a prospect. Horton shows good contact ability but he has a severe lack of power and he is not all that good on defense as a shortstop. To me he is like Pennington without the speed, worse defense, and slightly less on base ability.

Western Union style recap of last night's River Cats game. Just because.
Went to game. It was good. Simmons complete game gem. Homer runs hit by our guys. Gnats lost. Denorfia ready for bigs.

So what's the deal with Alex Valdez?
I have basically been writing off Valdez’ strong start as one of the many quirks of small sample size but now it is getting to the point where you have to begin to take notice.
After the ‘07 season in which he hit .264/.321/.431 for Kane County he was mentioned as someone who the A’s brass considered to be a sleeper. Looking at his numbers there was not much to get excited about but I figured the people who see him play all the time and are paid to evaluate players must have seen something there.
Then came the disasterous ’08 season where he missed almost the entire year due to a visa issue (I think) and then wished he did miss the whole year when he put up a .169/.195/.183 line in 21 games at Stockton. Seemed like the whole sleeper tag might have been premature but maybe the truncated season messed with him.
He returned to Stockton to start this season and while he was better than ‘08 his .258/.279/.387 line in 33 games was nothing to right home about and as a 23 year old in A+ ball pretty much all the luster was gone from his prospect status. Then the A’s decided he wasn’t being challenged enough and promoted Valdez to AA…
and a whole new Alex Valdez appeared in Midland. He is hitting .317/.375/.500 through 33 games while switching between 2B and 3B. Huh? His .354 BABIP is a bit high but does not account for this massive turnaround. Somehow at the age of 23, in the middle of his 4th year of pro-ball in the States Valdez seems to have decided that he will now exhibit expert control of the zone. Wuh? Lets look at his K and BB rates over the years
2006, 67 games in Vancouver: 5.7% BB-rate 25.3% K-rate (yikes)
2007, 111 games in Kane County: 7.9% BB-rate 21.2% K-rate (signs of improvement)
2008, 21 games in Stockton: 2.7% BB-rate 23.9% K-rate (crap)
2009, 33 games in Stockton: 3.1% BB-rate 24.2% K-rate (crap, part II)
2009, 33 games in Midland: 9.8% BB-rate 14.2% K-rate (Zuh?!??)
I don’t know how to explain it other than crazy small sample size fluke, but after 33 games it becomes harder to write off. If your a guy who hacks at everything and struggles to make contact you may go through a week or so where you face especially bad pitchers who throw it so far outside you have to take a walk or two and are unable to strike you out. But after 33 games most hackers will stop taking walks and strikeout kings will start to pile up the whiffs.
So what is going on here? Just a really extended fluke? Some sort of awesome adjustment that happened in the middle of a season while making what many consider to be the toughest jump in the minors? Valdez’ grabbed up by the bodysnatchers and replaced with a duplicate with great plate discipline? I can’t explain it but I am sure enjoying witnessing it.

Bullpens
While the girls watched some tearjerker last night, I entertained myself with some baseball. Watched my RockHounds on GameDay. Extra-inning win. Corey Brown strugglilng to regain form after DL.
The other game I watched was Sac-Fresno on MiLB.tv. Quality of video is about like a 1958 Sylvania, but, hey, it’s baseball.
Headline: Sacramento bullpen is awesome. Dana Eveland was pitching OK, then lost his control in 6th inning, and loaded bases with no outs and a dicey 3-1 lead. Pulled. Pissed. Demel (recently up from Hounds) came in and went K, K, GB. Saved Eveland’s butt. When Demel came off field, camera showed Eveland greeting him. Man-love.
Not to be outdone, Gray got the save with a K-K-K ninth. Altogether, Demel, Blevins, Webb, and Gray’s line in relief: 4IP, 1H, 7K. Game over. Big W for Sac over 2nd place Fresno.
Contrast that line with what Casilla, Breslow, Springer, and Wuertz had in relief for Oakland yesterday: 3.1IP, 8H, 7ER, 3BB, 2K. To his credit, E. Gonzalez pitched the 9th just fine.
Can we just trade bullpens straight up between our A’s and Cats?

Wow, Eveland's not even good enough to get AAA batters out.
Yes, he has a good win/loss record, but a 1.41 WHIP in Sacramento—in nearly 70 innings—is roster filler material.

Things are getting quiet around here
Just thought I should make mention of a Fautino sighting. De los Santos pitched in the Arizona Rookie League today going 2 innings with 2 H, 1R, 1BB, 3K. The numbers aren’t important right now, it’s just nice to see him back among the land of the living elbows.

More good news.
Awesome to see DLS back. Also Hunter pitches 2 and 2/3 inning allowing 1 hit and 1 walk and struck out 8. Every out he recorded was a strike out.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com
