Angels Sean Rodriguez 2 A's 4 Wuertz?
Mentioned on ESPN Rumor mill today that the Angels might be willing to move Rodriguez!
This kid is supposedly a top flight SS prospect. He has struggled in his limited time in the bigs, but a change of scenery, and playing his traditional position SS, instead of 2B, might be what this kid needs. This kid was a cant miss prospect before his recent stint in the Bigs, and seems like a great option to grow and play with the A's long term. Not to mention, he may just be an Angel killer out of Spite, and that would be great.
This is incridible value for a middle reliever, and if Billy can get this kid, I say fire away.

There is already a post about Wuertz on the site.
This is not needed.

No
Do Not want
1) we don’t need to give up Wuertz. Our pen needs pitchers like him. Ziggy is vulnerable (awful) against LHP and this guys K’s nearly every hitter he faces (exaggeration)
2) Screw the slegnA. Why make them better

Yes....what you said.
Wuertz needs to stay here for the next couple years to maintain the bullpen strength. And screw the Angels is right…..!

Great value for Wuertz
plus, aren’t we looking to 2011 anyway? What good does keeping Wuertz next year do for a 65-win team?

He is signed through 2011, but relievers grow on trees in our system. Relief help should not be a problem in 2011. Plus, Billy has show the willingness to go out and get a reliever or two in the offseason if necessary.

Oh come on
If the trade were Rodriguez for Wuertz, it would only be making the Angels better in the short term. In the long term, a swap of those two players would be helping the A’s, as a player of that caliber playing a middle infield position is worth far more than a reliever with an ERA in the 3’s.
Anyone who’s saying “Fuck the Angels, don’t give them a good player” about this prospective deal is missing the fact that this trade would make the Angels franchise WORSE. Would you really trade Rodriguez for Wuertz? Hell no, because the value of Rodriguez is greater than the value of Wuertz. Who cares if it helps the Angels this year, in the overall it’s a win for the A’s. Come on people, Wuertz is not God, he has an ERA of over 3, which is good but definitely not great for a bullpen arm. Meanwhile, Sean Rodriguez has hit over 20 homers in the minors, in less than a full season, as a middle infielder, as a 24 year old. Do I have to explain how rare that is in baseball?
I don’t actually believe the Angels would make that deal. I’m just trying to explain to people: I hate the Angels too, but you shouldn’t be so paralyzed by the idea of accidentally helping them that you don’t recognize a good trade when you seen one.

GMs do not trade to make their teams' situations worse.
There are opportunity costs when players are swapped and it all depends on what is valued at the time the deal is made. The Angels have plenty of infielders at the moment and have to gear up for the post season. If they have to give up a touted prospect to get a player they want right now, they do it and they are not made worse off for it. The games themselves might be of the zero-sum varieties but trades are definitely not; both teams do ‘win’ in a trade or the trades would not even go down in the first place.

because the A's minor league system might not have ever seen a power hitting middle infeilder that gets an RBI per game and 23 HR in half a year before
yes its AAA and a hitters park but he’s also only played 140 games in AAA so if he’s not ready just yet he can be soon. And he’s played around 500 games as SS so even if he’s not a defensive wizard there, he can pass if the bat plays.

this side thread is a response to the question "why would the A's trade for another 2nd basemen?
In a nutshell because S-Rod has the potential to be a +power bat at a position (2nd/SS) that is extremely hard to find . The A’s need more +power bats anywhere they can find them more than they need average to above avg defense.
If we are going to gamble, gamble on the “potential” + power bat middle infielder. If there is another “potential” + power bat that BB likes better, and can actually get, then by all means get him. I just don’t see who .

BRANDON WOOD says HI...
they hit in all the same parks and had the same inflated numbers.
Dating girls is like starting pitching depth, you think you have a good full rotation, even too many starters, then in an instant as soon as you trade your depth away injuries decimate your rotation and you are forced to start Sidney Ponson.

Better, now are you going to normalize those stats because minor league numbers vary so wildly?
If Sean Rodriguez was so awesome, why is he in the minors and not starting over Howie “80 OPS+” Kendrick, and why is he being talked about as a piece in a trade for a relief pitcher?

I agree he hasn't done shit in the majors and may need another year or two to finally pull it together if ever.
If I’m going to gamble, S-Rod is the gamble I take looking at the other names being thrown out there. I think (not sure) S-Rod is going to be out of options and will have to play in the majors next year. For a team that is competing for 1st every year that’s a problem. For the A’s right now, its not.

I'm not trading one of the better arms in the bullpen for a "maybe" prospect
considering that doing so would basically mean that the A’s will end up facing said bullpen arm for the next 2 years.

It's not a rule, but it's a common-sense habit.
When you make a trade and the trade is reasonably fair, both teams improve. There is no net gain against the team you trade with, but both teams have a net gain over everyone else in the league.
Ideally you’d rather gain against your closest rivals, so you’d rather trade with someone further away. But trading with a rival is still better than not trading at all, since you at least still have a gain against your other rivals.
If you have a deal to make and you have a choice, you prefer the non-division team. But if that’s the best or only deal available, you take it.

If we trade Wuertz to the slegnA...
I’m asking for Brandon Wood. If the slegnA say no ( which they probably would), hang up the phone. If they say yes, pull the trigger. Sean Rodriguez is a little too “meh” for me. Although Wood hasn’t proven anything at the major league level yet, his huge potential is still there.
Remember we don’t have to trade Wuertz. We should only move him for a very good prospect. We shouldn’t deal him just for the sake of dealing him.

I agree with this
They don’t HAVE to trade Wuertz. He’s a very good pitcher, under control for two more years. Look at his WHIP, K:IP, and K:BB ratios. And it’s not a fluke. Not to say Bailey is, but Wuertz has done this for a few years. Nothing wrong with having a strong bullpen while you develop young starting pitching. If Beane gets bowled over with an offer, is he expendable? Yes. But I wouldn’t mind having him in the pen the next two years.
