Let's Keep Orlando Cabrera
I know this is not going to be a popular opinion here but why don't we just keep Cabrera?? I know all the trade scenarios concerning him and maybe I'm completely off base but we don't have an imminently ready shortstop waiting in the wings do we? Cabrera is also proving that he is not nearly as bad as his haters seem to think. In fact, I'd say he's pretty damn good.
I still remember Jason Giambi on Letterman treating Oakland like a doormat when he left, Rafael Furcal basically using us only to leverage his value and then bad-mouthing Oakland on his way out the door. And I'm sure Matt Holliday breathed a sigh of relief when he found out he was traded to St. Louis. He didn't seem to like Oakland from Day 1. I'm sure he never even unpacked his bags!
With Crosby and Garciaparra coming off the books and the option on Giambi obviously not being picked up, don't we have the flexibility to keep Cabrera for a couple 3 years? I like his glove, I'm starting to really like his bat, and I love his attitude. And get this, he LIKES Oakland!! Who were the last players we could say THAT about?! Swisher? Tejada? And they has success here too! Maybe liking your job has some correlation to how well you do it? I don't know but what a novel concept.

The main problem I have with this is if the A's stop trying really hard to get a SS of the future becaue he's got it covered for a few years.
He’s worth what we are paying him, not a whole lot more or less.

I think the A's are trying
To get their future SS. Hopefully they sign their top 2009 draft choice.

According to Slusser
Keeping Cabrera is indeed a possibility
by OaklandSi on Jul 27, 2009 4:53 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
here's the cite
from Slusser:
The A’s also would be happy to hang onto Cabrera, who has displayed good leadership, especially with the team’s young pitchers. Cabrera likes Oakland, too, and he has expressed interest in coming back next year.
Resign him...
get it done. He is the best hitter on the team right now.
I am in favor of re-signing him!!!!
2 years $10 million…
"I occasionally post and offer little to no insight here on AN except emotional ramblings. Do I remind you of someone? (Nomar maybe?)"
I can't remember the current state of FA rules
The A’s have contractually agreed not to offer O-Cab arbitration if he’s a type-A FA (because the arb offer would make teams give up a first or 2nd round pick to sign him, which would make him less attractive to sign). The rule used to be that if you didn’t offer arb, you couldn’t resign the player until, IIRC, May 1. Do I have that right? And does the rule still work that way?
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I think that was eliminated in the lates agreement with the players' union
and even so, that applied to players who refused arbitration. It doesn’t sound like that would apply to a player who simply re-signs with the team with which he just finished a contract.
OK, thanks

Re-sign Nomar, forget AK-29...

Seriously...
Nomar should probably be signed as the hitting coach for next season. Seems like a good fit.

Nomar? Why?
He’s close to useless defensively, he’s not hitting well, and he’s always hurt.

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to Cabrera.
Remember that he’s getting old too. We don’t want to be paying him $5 million in 3 years. He’d probably be ok for another year or so. What’s also nice is that after this contract, the A’s may be able to offer him arbitration after that so we could get a couple draft picks.
If the right deal comes along, trade him. If it doesn’t, keep him. I’m fine with it.
Nick makes a good point though, there might be some problems with resigning a guy who wasn’t offered arbitration. I’m not sure how that rule works.

it would be refreshing
for if a player did truly like a city and wanted to play there, for him to tell the GM to trade him so the organization could further strengthen their minor leagues and that he would sign back with them in the offseason.
Like when Rickey went to Toronto and then came back that offseason?
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
Doesn't Cabrera's contract state
if he becomes a Type A FA, the A’s can’t offer him arbitration. Maybe it’s Type B, I can’t remember. But I remember reading something like that somewhere…
you're right, they can't offer him arbitration
once he declares free agency.
But I don’t think that means they can’t sign a contract with him.
Yup, there's a clause in the contract saying that they can't offer arb if he is a Type A
Basically because nobody wanted to give up a draft pick to sign him.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
Its a gamble
Ocab will want more than a 1 year extension. Right now his value is way up and on top of that with the shortage of SS its going to be a good FA for SS. Even Crosby might get signed next year for a incentive based contract with another club.
I think your post is unfair to Holliday.
He has never dissed Oakland, except in fans’ imaginations. He was unhappy for much of his time here because he was in a slump. On the occasions when he was hitting well, he was perfectly happy.
He “didn’t seem” to like it here because he’s not an effusive personality. You could say the same thing about several low-key players, but somehow it’s always on Holliday. Does anyone complain that Ellis “doesn’t seem to like Oakland”? Heck, Ellis doesn’t even live here.
As for Holliday “never unpack[ing] his bags”, that’s just being realistic. He understood the contract situation as well as anyone. It was never going to be more than a one-year stay. And once the A’s tanked, it was never going to be more than a half-year stay.

Exactly.
I wish people would just fucking quit with all of the Holliday nonsense already.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
I have to agree -- one of the things I appreciated about Holliday
is that whatever he felt and whatever reason he felt it, he never expressed anything negative about playing here. He was very professional in that regard.

plus, it's not like holliday didn't know he was a quick rental to flip on a trade.
i mean really.

Everybody knew that he was either getting traded or walking as a FA.
I specifically remember Holliday being interviewed and saying he realized the situation and he had no issue with staying in Oakland all season or being traded if the team could get “a couple good players” for him.
Basically, all the “OMG I HATE HOLLIDAY HE DOESNT EVEN WANNA BE HERE AND ISNT TRYING TO HIT!!” people were just being whiny bitches.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
Besides why would he take it easy in
A contract year he could make 140 million over the next 7-10 years based on what he does this year. he had all the motivation in the world just there

On the mark
One plus of the Holliday trade is that we’ll not much longer have to be privy to all the Holliday mind-reading from some on the boards here.
Let's not.
Signing middling, aging players to long term contracts is almost never a good idea.

You know how direly we need a young SS?
It’s so dire that this might be a good idea.
If we hang onto to Cabrera all season, there’s only two reasons I can think of:
1. OCab had a say in where he would be traded and didn’t like where Billy tried to trade him or
2. the A’s are looking to re-sign him.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
to my knowledge he doesn't have a no-trade clause
or any limits to where he could be traded. I do remember that he gets a bonus payment if he’s traded, but I don’t think it was a huge amount of $$, relatively speaking.
To my knowledge there's nothing official
But the OCab deal seemed to have handshake agreements all over it. Makes you wonder if there’s stuff we don’t know, equivalent to a partial NTC.

Doesn’t the “dire need” disappear?

Let Pennington Play
I think he can give us production similar to Cabrera’s but with a better OBP, and for way cheaper.
To be honest
I’ve been a fan of Cabrera from the get-go. I never ever lost faith in him. There is really nothing you can’t like about this guy. He’s and absolute delight to watch play, he’s a true family man, and he loves what he does. Seriously, I love watching him play, he exudes true passion for the game.
I would be down for a 1 year deal with a nice 1 year mutual or team option. Nothing longer than that, but that sounds right.
He really believes in this team, and coming from a veteran, I think that is so flattering.

I can't say I'd be COMPLETELY opposed to that
I dunno though, is this just one hot month in a “fall off the cliff” season?
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
I agree, He was the only one who stepped up, called a meeting, and said 'WTF, can we hit for once?'
He also is curiously lacking in that #1 quality of an ‘A’ -
Y’know the one that has to do w/ some list you get sent off to for a half of a month or two.
This in itself is a miracle, esp. when you look at his career AB’s.
Dont blow Bailey.
He rarely walks, too.
Hmm, Tejada rarely walked and he also was uncharacteristically healthy. Maybe taking a lot of pitches is correlated to being injury-prone.

Keep Cabrera
Why would you want to waste 2-3 years and 5+ million a year on a decent at best shortstop. His defense is nothing like it has been in the past. He’s swinging a nice bat right now but that’s all the more reason to sell high. If he really wants to come back to Oakland, he can come back as a FA next year.
