Another Trade Deadline Thread
There are some interesting rumors floating around about the A's right now.
The Brewers are scouting Duke's rehab start tonight.
The Twins are in "deep talks" with the A's about Cabrera.
An interesting non-A's development. The Dodgers are considering sending Loney, Kershaw or Billingsly, and prospects to the Indians for Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee.
Personally, I don't think the Brewers will trade much of anything for Duke. My guess would be that Duke would clear waivers and could be traded sometime in August if he actually pitches well and looks healthy.
The Twins could very well get Cabrera, but I think that AN will be disappointed in the return. The Twins NEVER trade prospects of value (maybe besides the Delmon Young trade, but that would be considered prospect for prospect) so I'm guess anything the A's would get in return would be a fringe prospect unless Cabrera goes to a different team. The Twins are rightfully stingy with their prospects.
I also don't see the Dodgers trading Loney and one of their young stud pitchers. The Dodgers are rumored every year to give their young talent away but rarely do. Is Martinez that much better than Loney? Is Lee that much better than Kershaw or Billingsly?
As for the A's, I think the chances of Duke getting traded are slim, no chance of Giambi, and less than a 50/50 shot of Cabrera going to the Twins.

That Dodgers-Indians sounds epic. It seems like if the Indians wanted to swap Martinez and Lee for Loney and Kershaw, it would’ve been done already, though.

I agree.
I think it would be a good deal for the Indians.

Ya think?!
What an unbelievably stupid trade that would be for the Dodgers … Kershaw is so much better than Lee … and the Dodgers would send “prospects”, too? Wow. We can come up with some really laughable scenarios on blogs.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
Would a Braden for McDonald deal be ok?
I’m not sure McDonald can last at SS. Does anyone know?

Hmmm...
Cubs – They might want Wuertz back or might want Sweeney to give them a left-handed outfielder that Sweet Lou wants?
Phils – They were rumored to be interested in Hairston a little while ago to be a right-handed bench bat. Also Wuertz.
Rangers – Maybe Duke? Wuertz?
Brewesr – Duke/Wuertz?
Red Sox – O-Cab
Reds – Hairston
O’s – ?
Yankees – ?
White Sox – ?
Cards – Wuertz/Duke
Mets – Hairston/Duke/Wuertz?
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
i see no way duke gets traded
a) i can’t imagine any team would give up anything of value to get him right now, given his health, and b) i can’t imagine beane would trade him at his absolute lowest value point. i mean, if somebody offers us something ridiculous, obviously we should do the deal, but i think there’s no point to trade him if we get scrap parts back – i’d rather take the chance that he gets healthy and pitches decent for us.

I hope that doesn't happen, Gonzalez is awesome.
Some motherfcukers are always trying to ice skate uphill - Blade.
Billy can do a Holliday and get Gonzalez for the A's to trade for the best SS prospect in
baseball and more this time next year or two years from now. the difference being Gonzalez is cheap at 5 million in 2010 and 2011 and we would have him for 2+ years if we were competitive in 11 and didn’t want to trade him.

How much is Roy Halladay's contract worth?
9:45am: Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports says that as of Saturday night, the Angels “were of the mind to remove themselves from the Roy Halladay talks, believing they were never going to come close to the Blue Jays’ asking price of Joe Saunders, Erick Aybar, Brandon Wood and a prospect such as outfielder Peter Bourjos.”
If this is all they want, I am sure we could give them something nice and then flip him like Holliday.
I can't imagine the A's having the pieces to do this....
however, Beane could call the slegnA and tell them to do that and then we could send them Weurtz and Cabrera for Sean Rodriguez and others.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
Though I doubt the slegnA will give up that many prospects.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
Did you see what the Jays wanted?
That was a pretty pathetic list of players. No blue chippers at all.
Saunders is a middle of the rotation guy, Aybar has had 2 bad months, one decent, and now one amazing month, he is an average-above average player at best. Wood is a blown prospect and Bourjos isn’t anything special.
In terms of value, that's a great deal for the Angels.
But i think they’d balk at a deal like that because it removes to many pieces from the current ML team, particularly Aybar. They feel like they can’t go for it with middle infield help removed like that, which I can understand (hello Cabrera).
The Jays seem to be asking for mostly the wrong guys, in talent and in fit for the deal.
Walden/Reckling/Conger/Wood/Bourjos seems smarter.
Baseball isn't magic.
The A's should acquire and flip Halliday,
just for the symmetrical beauty of flipping Holliday and Halliday in the same season.

Cabrera
Twins, A’s nowhere close on deal for Cabrera
The Twins have exchanged names with the A’s about a trade for shortstop Orlando Cabrera, but the talks are “nowhere,” according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.
The A’s considered the Twins’ offer “less than inspired,” the source said, but anticipate that the Red Sox and other teams could jump into the mix for Cabrera this week.
See I think differently
I think, “Hold out for someone you really want” (like Hicks or Revere might be), and add pieces as need be to get it done. But don’t settle for crap; if all you’re offered is crap, keep O-Cab.

exactly
look, he’s hitting insanely well lately. he’s worth something decent. i’d say at least a B- prospect. if we get offered junk for him, keep him and let him keep hitting well. there’s something to be said for having good hitters in the lineup.

Well I meant it as
Beane was offered Hicks or Revere and he wanted more. If he gets offered a C+ prospect or higher Ill be happy considering we can’t offer OCab abirtration and therefore no comp. picks.
HILLIS
I'm sure he wasn't offered Hicks or Revere,
and that if he were he’d do it in a heartbeat. Sounds to me as if the Twins are trying to get Cabrera on the cheap by offering a fringe prospect, and that Beane is rightly saying “no thanks.”
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
agree
i think the twins want a guy who hitting like crazy at a position they need help at and who’d seriously improve their postseason chances, for maybe a C prospect who may never even succeed in AA or AAA, let alone the bigs. we’re right to ask for at least a B- or B prospect in return, or as nico suggests, make a reasonable package to get a B+ guy.
by guy incognito on Jul 26, 2009 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions
I disagree.
It sounds to me like the Twins did make a reasonable offer, but Billy wants to squeeze a little bit more out of them. He knows that Gardenhire wants Cabrera, and he knows the Twins could really use him. By “leaking” the “fact” that Minnesota’s offer was a lowball offer, he puts pressure on the Twins ownership. Either they have to come out and say, “look, we offered them Xxx and Yyy, but they wouldn’t take it” — which presumably Beane thinks they aren’t willing to do — or else they will bring down the wrath of Twins fans howling at them for being cheapskates if the deal isn’t done.
My guess is that the “less than inspired” line is bullshit, Beane and Smith both know that it’s bullshit, but Smith is stuck anyway. He’s worried how it looks if he can’t make the deal, O-Cab goes to a rival team, and he misses the playoffs without a decent SS. That worry is going to make him cave and increase the already reasonable offer by adding whatever third piece it is that Beane is trying to wring out of him.
All of this is pure speculation, of course, but that’s how I read the source quoted above.
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers." —Rev Halofan
It's possible. I guess the reason I think differently
is that there’s a big drop from Twins prospects that are too good for a Cabrera deal and Twins prospects that aren’t good enough. Assuming the Twins said “No, we’re not parting with Hicks or Revere,” then what they did offer likely was pretty uninspiring. Just because there’s not much in between.

And unlike Nomar, Crosby, and Giambi (if/when he comes back)
O-Cab is not blocking anybody, since the A’s have no one plausible at SS. Unless you few remaining Pennington fans think otherwise.
But those other three, I want them gone. Good guys, one and all, but every at-bat they get is an at-bat by a player who won’t be on the next good A’s team at the expense of players who might be on the next good A’s team: Patterson, Buck, Barton, and maybe Cunningham. I say maybe Cunningham because he can still hang out at AAA for a while, but Buck, Barton, and Patterson are all right there at the fish-or-cut-bait nexus of their careers. We need to see if they’re in or out going forward.

Next you’ll start putting forth names like Codiroli and Heimuller.
I do hope Gio isn’t the new Bill Krueger.
The Kingdome was awful, too.
But the Metrodome, though actually quite different, is arguably even worse. The Kingdome was uglier (and for some reason all the stadium drones were dressed in this hideous Padre-throwback brown….a color the M’s themselves never wore), but at least the seats were oriented the right way toward the field and outfielders didn’t lose balls in the roof.
Baseball has fewer and fewer really awful venues. Windlestick is gone. So are Stade Olympique, the old Vet, old Busch, Three Rivers, and Riverfront (these last three dreary, but not quite as bad as the rest). The Metrodome is right up there with these stadiums in terms of awful.
The Coliseum, even with Mt. Davis, doesn’t come close.

Twins and Ocab
Ocab has a no trade clause so that could be a hang up. Also the A’s are happy with Ocab and could be talking about a extension for next year. The A’s rumor is Beane wanted the twins ss prospect Pluffer who is batting .240 in AAA but is only 22 years old.
I thought the A's just had to pay him 500k in order to trade him.
Eveland rocks! Eveland rocks! Somewhere Drew Carey just smiled.
Cot's says $250,000 if traded. the other team could kick it in if it was a problem for the A's
which if they got a B prospect shouldn’t be.
"Gratuitous gesticulating together sounds even better"
I wonder if the A's do keep him till the end of the year, how much it would take to get him to waive the no arb clause in his contract
1-2 million to get two high draft picks could be doable assuming he would be a type A and anyone would actually sign him again if it meant losing there 1st rounder.
