Who's Getting Traded? Lets have some hypothetical fun!

So, everyone realizes that Cabrera and probably Wuertz are most likely going to the Twinkies by the end of the week, and there are rumors Duke could be gone too.  But who else could/should be traded?

My pick: Dallas Braden

Think about it.  He is at peak value, and most likely not in the A's long term plans.  A rotation of Anderson, Cahill, Mazarro, Gio, FDLS, and eventually Inoa has no room for a 5th starter come 2011.   For me, he is the guy Billy is shopping under the table that nobody expects, as he could likely get more now than at any time in the future.  There're gonna be a ton of losers in the Halliday market, and those teams should come calling soon after.

The argument against this is that he is the only consistent veteran in the rotation (I guess he qualifies as a veteran even though its his first full year starting too), and Billy would not create a hole like that in the rotation.  But I say look at history, and it is clear to see that Billy one, has no problem with blowing up a rotation mid season, and two, Billy likes to trade high/at peak value to get the best return long term(who doesn't?).

Lastly, I believe it is in the A's best interest to keep Duke for the rest of this season, and re-sign him next year on the cheap, at least relatively speaking, for his level of talent.  Again, very much a Billy move.  He is all about Value, and you can get much more next year for a healthy Duke signed to reasonable contract, then a recovering Duke on an expiring contract.  That eliminates the need to keep Braden for his questionable "Veteran" status.

Just makes too much sense to me.  OK, FIRE AWAY, but dont come with no weak sauce! ROFL!

Why is he unhappy?

I have not herd that and that could change my whole argument. I love Duke, and pray he wants to stay.

He didn't like that the A's waited so long to put him into the rotation.

given his struggles to stay healthy since then

I can’t say I completely blame them for being cautious with him.

It all depends on whether or not Beane wants him in the rotation or the bullpen.

If he ends up in the bullpen later this year (if he’s not traded), he’s gone for sure. He loves to start! He started in the minors.

Braden traded?

Why would it make sense for us to hold onto Duke when he’s going to be a FA at the end of the season? Wouldn’t it make more sense to package him in a trade at the deadline to get the best possible return on a O-Cab or Wuetrz trade? One major problem with your potential trade of Braden is that your relying on FLDS and Ynoa to be ready to contribute in 2011. FLDS hasn’t shown much in the Oakland orginization. Granted he was injured but he seems to much like a Rich Harden to me. Ynoa is only 17 years old and has never ptiched in the US. How is he supposed to be pitching in Oaklan in two years. Braden will only get shipped out if the deal is just to good to refuse. I don’t see that happening.

I think that is the pretty likely scenario, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he is dealt.

Braden is only shipped out if its too good to be true, I agree

I really don’t think a lot of teams are going to offer a boatload of talent for him. I really doubt it.

One team supposedly on the under

is the Tampa Bay Rays. They are trying to Deal Kazmir to the Angels or someone, and if they fail in their run at Halliday, Braden could be the next target if Billy makes him available. They have great talent in their system they could part with.

...why would the Rays try and trade for Braden?

While we’re just beginning to find out what Friedman will do at the deadline (First deadline after a winning season) I really doubt something happens with them. If they pull off the say V-Mart + Cliff Lee deal, I’ll be impressed. However, I think it’ll need to be a three team deal because the Rays won’t want to part with Beckham etc. Which is why I think the Rays are pushing Kazmir on the Angels. This way they can flip the prospects to Cleveland. The Rays have plenty of good pitching, they just need a frontline started. Braden is good, but he’s not clear cut frontline yet.

I understand he is a FA.....

but I want Billy to resign him on the cheap, as should be possible coming off injury yet again. I just dont see him having any real value currently on the market, so keep him as the veteran presence and resign him, and trade Braden at peak value.

Interesting fact, FDLS is supposedly throwing mid 90s FBs post tommy john surgery. Harden never had TJ surgery.

Regarding Inoa, the key word in the article is “eventually” meaning post 2011.

re:

Duke is an oft injured pitcher who is destined to stay in the ‘pen. If he agrees to a minimal contract in the pen, he’d be an excellent long relief/spot starter. Past that, no. If he wants a starting gig he should find it somewhere else.

re: FDLS, TJ is hard to come back from, and I’m excited as to what he can pull off. The Harden comparison doesn’t fit, simply because Harden ALWAYS had something tiny wrong. FDLS got unlucky with the TJ, shit happens.

Ynoa, like I have said in other threads, is ‘12-’13 ready if he proves he can pitch. Wait and see with him.

FLDS hitting mid 90s post TJ surgery......

and I said “post 2011” when referring to Inoa. Also I did not make the Harden comparison, rather I contrasted them in response to comment above.

Duke is deserving of more than a minimal contract regardless of whether he is in the pen or not. He will be relatively inexpensive for his level of talent, but certainly wont sign for a minimal contract as a two time all star. Others with his career ERA and stats would get way more, and thats why he is of VALUE to Billy.

Highest Value?

How can you say that Braden is at his highest value right now? Granted his ERA is a high low 3.40 at the moment. But his W-L ratio is 7-8. Not saying that Wins and Loses are a significant statistic but the majority of MLB seems to overvalue them. Because of this, I see his percieved value as lower than it really should be.

by jblanton on Jul 26, 2009 1:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, a record of 7-8 for a team almost 20 games under .500 is quite impressive...

…a pitcher’s W/L record has a lot to do with the quality of his team. Our team, for instance, is dog shit. If a pitcher has the very same record of 7-8 with a first-place team, that pitcher is probably horrible. When I was a kid, I remember Steve Carlton winning like 26 games for a team that won less than 60 games for the year (I forget if this was during his last year with the Cards or his first with the Phils). For a SP to win almost 50% of his team’s games is simply astonishing. Winning games for shitty teams like ours is not easy…

Win Lose Ratio

Win Lose ratio is overrated by the majority of MLB. An example of this would be Tim Wakefield being selected over Dallas Braden and a mass of other more qualified starters for the All-Star Game. Wakefield was selected mainly because of his sterling W-L ratio even though his ERA was in the mid 4s. I’m not saying that it’s right. I’m just saying that’s how most of the baseball GMs perceive it.

That’s interesting. I never even thought about it. If a team is looking for a young pitcher, I’d trade Braden if that team has a pretty nice young bat.

I like that guy. It won’t happen, but I like that guy.

at the thought of getting this kind of talent for Braden. Billy wold really be the greatest swindler of all time if he could pull that off.

by Wader on Jul 26, 2009 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, the most obvious criticism would be that

You really can’t count on a rotation of Anderson, Cahill, Mazzaro, Gio, FDLS, and Ynoa. It’s just the nature of prospects that a lot of them flame out and never reach their full potential, especially considering that FDLS and Ynoa are years and years away from the big leagues. If both of them happen to develop into front-line starters, well, great. But let’s not count on that until it happens. Until then, we should keep our rotation loaded. When they reach AAA and start knocking on the door to the big leagues, we can trade some depth away, provided we have it.

by danmerqury on Jul 25, 2009 11:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the A's pitching depth isnt that good as before

after cahill/mazzaro/anderson/braden

mortensen might be next in line, but beane has already mentioned him as a potential reliever already
eveland headcase
gallagher traded
outman TJ surgery
duke- 09 lost season, goner as FA
gio too inconsistent
simmons very hittable in AAA

maybe pitchers like ross, capra, godfrey, banwart, fernandez etc might be useful later on, but they cant really afford to trade someone established at the mlb rotation yet

by Asfan4ever723 on Jul 26, 2009 12:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the high level pitching depth is very barren.

Braden should be one of the few people that are untouchable at the moment. Not because he’s part of our plans in the future, simply because it would devastate our rotation.

Oh, no, I understand that much Zonis

I’m just hoping that people like Ross, Capra, Fernandez, etc can make the jump to the next level and can be decent. AAA rotation has Simmons and like that’s it.

Ummmm.....

Yes, our IMMEDIATE pitching depth is not what it used to be, but that is a direct result of bringing up all the kids that are there now. But is that really the issue at this time? This rebuild has always been about 2011 and beyond, and by that time, Guys like FDLS, Outman, Ross will be waiting in the wings ready to go. (hopefully)

I think a lot of A’s fans need to get there head out of the current crappy season, and look objectively at the future, and pitching depth is definitely not the issue. I mean Inoa is the REAL BEAST of the future, and he wont get a shot till 2012 or beyond.

No, when this team is ready to compete in 2011 and beyond, there will be an abundance of depth available to take their shot at sticking in the Bigs.

I don't know if Duke would resign, but I'd be more than glad to keep that man

in the green and gold. As for Braden… well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go, but I’m not expecting it to happen. With the questions in our rotation, I think Beane may be holding onto the arms right now.

How can you possibly include FDLS in the long term plans...

but NOT Braden? FDLS is coming off Tommy John surgery and still needs to prove that he can get major leaguers out. Braden has proven that he can do it. Granted Braden isn’t a 3.10 ERA pitcher, but he’s a better than average 3 or 4. I’d keep him unless the A’s can net a top SS prospect.

He is supposedly throwing in the mid 90s post TJ surgery......

He is still a massive talent, and with todays medical technology, plus the fact that he is only 21, he seems like his arm is as good as new, if hes really is throwing in the mid 90s. He is much more than the average pitching prospect.
