So the proliferation of "Rally Salmas" and the like have created a dilemma that is ultimately a bit of a no-win for a blogfather, and his merry band of moderators. To censor, in any way, is surely to invite cries of "censorship!!!!111" yet there are not one, not two, but three different problems these rally pics potentially create:
1. It is arguable that by allowing photos of the scantily clad, one is condoning the objectification of women, or men, or...well, whatever, and certainly we don't want to offend unnecessarily.
2. There have been concerns raised, from people who follow AN at work, about the awkwardness of having a co-worker, maybe even a supervisor, walk past the computer at just the time a Rally Babe (or stud) might be making her (or his) plea for a clutch hit or two.
3. Photos can significantly slow down the load time of the site, which can inconvenience anyone trying to read AN, including the many "lurkers" whose presence may not be as apparent but whose needs are also important to consider.
The reality is, I have gotten some complaints, privately, over the past few weeks, over the increasing population of Salma and Salma-wannabees. At the very least, I think some discussion is warranted of how folks feel and why.
Here's my initial thought. What if instead of an edict, or a formal addition to the CGs around "rally photos," we start with a friendly plea, and a little community self-policing, asking that a given thread be limited to, say, one "rally photo"? Let's face it -- after one has been posted, another one or ten is not exactly original anyway. That would address concern #3 greatly, concern #2 quite a bit, and #1 at least some.
I've put up a poll to let the community weigh in as a group. Mostly, though, this post is to ask, "Sound reasonable?" and if so to ask that the community self-police the issue so it doesn't need to become an admin-driven issue. Your thoughts?
