DLD 7/21/09 - Still in awe of last night
I want a new freaking DLD, so here we go.
Star Tribune's recap of last night's game. Looking at the picture, it looks like Cuddyer's right leg/foot was over (above) the plate as Wuertz tagged him - looks OUT to me.
Watching last night's game made me think of this game from last year (which I was fortunate to attend). Like last night, Holliday had two HRs in that game, including a slam. The park factor between Coors and the Coliseum looks like about -8 runs.
Today is the 40th anniversary of the first successful manned launch from the surface of the moon. That moonwalk stuff is so yesterday.
As Englishmajor announced during last night's game thread (one of them, I don't remember which), California has a budget agreement. I guess this means no more IOU's.
Finally, some overdue recognition is given to some true American heroes.

A DLD! And another opportunity for my all-out publicity blitz.
The contents of my fanpost, which probably should’ve just been a comment in a DLD (except a DLD didn’t exist yet; if enough people complain, I’ll delete the fanpost) :
The Stockton Ports are coming to town (well, moreso for some of us than others) to take on the San Jose Giants this weekend! And, I’m selling tickets that benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
This Saturday, July 25, is Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) day at San Jose Municipal Stadium, and the San Jose Giants have been kind enough to offer a fundraiser for the Society. The game is at 6:00pm. I have tickets available for $10/ea, all of which will be donated to LLS via their Team In Training program. I will also be singing the national anthem at this game!
Please email me for tickets at mthanawala@gmail.com. I have about 25 tickets left that I need to sell! They are general admission tickets, but they are upgradeable to reserved seats for an additional $9 (which does not benefit LLS).
What is Team In Training? It’s a program where professional coaches train ordinary people for endurance events, such as marathons, half-marathons, century rides, triathlons (even Ironman!), and various other events, in exchange for fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I just completed my second season with them, and ran the Seattle Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon in June! I also ran the Santa Barbara Half Marathon in November with Team In Training, and between the two seasons, my friends have helped me raise almost $6000.
So help out if you can, and come see some of our top prospects beat down some of the Giants top prospects!

I was in Mexico during the last World Cup in 2006...
a tiny, tiny town where my ex-wife was born/raised. It was awesome watching Mexico vs. Portugal on a little television while eating the most tender carnitas ever. Rafael Marquez scored the game’s first goal, and I thought they were going to make me king there. I seriously was not going to come home. Alas, Portugal won 2-1, but it was pretty intense.

His description of the World Cup is not exaggerated. I went to Germany 2006. it was the best sporting event I have ever witnessed. So fun to hang out and dance and sing with fans from all over the world. No wonder it’s called The Beautiful Game.

i was in argentina in 78... i rooted for holland!
little contrarian shit that i was. i mean, i was born and raised in argentina, my dad was an architect of the stadium in mendoza (i have pictures of me in a hardhat standing by a caterpillar in the freshly dug bowl), everybody was singing the song for months in advance (“25 millones de argentinos, jugaremos el mundial”), and somehow, somewhere, i invented the idea that orange jerseys were cool and that was that. i picked holland from the start. little did i know they’d go to the final, against argentina. worst night of my early life… rooting for holland just because i said i would to the bitter end and then when everybody went out in the streets to bang pots and pans and scream and sing, i kind of remember being a party pooper for a while and then switching teams to the winning side. hey, i had no business rooting for holland. and the party was awesome.
forget diego, here’s mario…

i missed every cup since, including the 1994 edition, when it was held in the US, because i was traveling… in argentina.
too bad argentina isn’t gonna qualify this year—that is my sober prediction for a team coached by someone with zero coaching experience. he just doesn’t know how to think tactically. and thus, messi, the best player in the world isn’t gonna get to go. neither is, cristiano ronaldo (don’t think chunky bald guy, the other ronaldo), the 2nd best, since portugal is looking left out as well. isn’t that weird?
don't care if i ever get back.

But, um, Messi isn't the best player in the world.

i should have specified
best current player of association football in the world. as for “best player,” biggie in perpetuity.
kidding aside, ronaldo is a great kicker. but that’s only one of the skills of soccer. ronaldo is limited to either take a ball in the area and seal the deal (mmmmost of the time, not during the champions final though) or shoot from outside to surprise. sometimes he can pass a defender using his little riverdance foot moves, but that’s more of a sideshow than soccer playing, because it only works if he’s got a kick open right after that otherwise he’s going to lose the ball to the other defender there. i’d say he knows how to make zoolander faces too, but i think that’s more of a complex than a skill. messi is an instinct player—whether alone in the area, battling midfield, or just passing (ronaldo may never have heard of this area of knowledge), his nature is to touch the ball to put it just outside of reach in an unexpected place. so i guess i’m saying a best player needs to be more than just a killer closer. messi is that, plus a lot of #10 on top, a team player AND he’s humble. in other words, would ronaldo be as good as he is a forward if he were playing #5? i know messi would be. but i didn’t mean to limit it to just those two. or were you thinking kaka? i’m sorry, i can’t just abide by homophones.
10 goals aren’t proof, especially when talking about overall play, but check out the variety of play Messi presents and the single-footedness of Ronaldo.
of course, you’ve seen messi’s homage, right?
don't care if i ever get back.

Almost LOL'ed at this (Onion article)
Selfless Jason Kendall Sacrifices Bunt, Self For Good Of Team, Advancement Of Runners
MILWAUKEE—In an act of selflessness not often seen amongst ego-driven American athletes, who typically look only to further their own personal agendas, hero Milwaukee Brewers player Jason Kendall placed a bunted ball back to the pitcher Tuesday with full knowledge that he himself would be eliminated from scoring contention for the duration of the contest’s fifth inning. Receiving upon his return to the dugout a mere smattering of high fives from his ignorant teammates and but one hand-clap from the staff of coaching elders, Kendall was not properly greeted as a hero responsible for the very 90-foot advancement of teammates Mat Gamel and J.J. Hardy to second and third base respectively. Due to his undying devotion to the singular cause of winning, even at the cost of his own personal downfall, Jason Kendall is the greatest player to ever play the game of baseball.

Four Years Ago To The Day
Four years ago to the day, Kendall tagged out Michael Young with his face to end the game in Arlington, and lead the A’s to a 11-10 victory. Laugh about that Onion piece all you want, but that play is still one of the self-sacrificing plays I’ve ever seen in sports.

about the star tribune picture...
the calf of his leg is only over (above) the plate because it is following the foot that has already crossed over (touching from end to end) the plate. this happened a second before the tag was applied. buddy was safe. but i’ll take it like it was individually wrapped. same way i once took the hand of god.

Am I the only one bothered by the placement of A's in this..
I know they just mean “Keep baseball in Oakland”
But it looks like “Keep baseball A’s in Oakland”
Put the A’s before baseball so then it looks like “Keep A’s Baseball in Oakland”
Just kinda reminds me of Angela Stadium with bad placement of logo in sentence.

Sandoval as highly as he is, Ryan Zimmerman as low as he is, lots of beyond awful defensive players. There’s a lot of really really really good players on there, but there’s a lot of stupid ass hyping as well.
