'09 Draft Questions
Okay, maybe I'm being a little nervous here. We're getting close to the trade deadline, with the deadline for signing draft picks around a month away. In past drafts, we've either signed the guys that were important pretty quickly, or signed them at around this time of the year. This year I haven't heard so much as a peep about the A's picks, namely Grant Green and Max Stassi. Does anyone have any idea of what's going on with these guys? Let alone what's happening with Krol/Leyland/Dyson. So I ask the smartest A's fans on the interwebz. I'm aware that they're all signability guys, but I'd expect SOME leakage about what's going on. (TWSS?)
Are we expecting this to push until the deadline? Who will we sign of the 5 main guys, if any?
Halp :(

If shes talking about leakage there is a problem... its not very sexy
The rumor on Leyland is the A’s expect to sign him pretty easily… which came from a Scout.com Chat I think with an A’s official
I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t hear much until right before the deadline with the big names it usually takes a while if they are holding out for more than slot.

Leyland
That’s good to hear. I’d be excited if we could sign him.

Oh and I think we sign Krol, Leyland, Stassi of the signability guys.

If Dyson is the one guy we don't sign...
I’ll be happy with that outcome. I would love if we sign him. However, it seems we are already stacked with supremely talented pitchers who have significant injury histories- Hunter, Dan Thomas, FDLS, Ross (more mechanics could lead to future injury problems)- so he is not a need. I may be foolish, but Leyland might be the prospect I want the A’s to sign the most, after green, because of his power potential. Again, Stassi is probably a superior prospect- but nonetheless I am enticed by getting as many legil power-hitting prospects into our system as possible.
I'll do what I can.
1) Last year it DID take a while to sign a few players. A good example is Dusty Coleman, who the A’s followed during the cape cod league before they decided he was worth 6 figures. Another is Hunter, who the A’s didn’t trust was healed until he played for team USA.
2) If we are taking about why the A’s first round pick is taking so long compared to the A’s first round picks in the past we have to remember that Green is a Borris client and they never sign until the deadline. Also, Beane and Borris are both passive negotiators who wait for the other person to make a move, so don’t expect to hear anything until August. We also need to keep in mind that the A’s usually pick a "safe player with their first round pick who they know they can sign quickly for slot, that didn’t happen this year (thank God) so that’s another reason it will take longer.
3) Don’t worry about Stassi, the A’s wouldn’t have used a 4th round pick on him if they had any inclination that he wouldn’t sign. The problem is the A’s will have to go massively overslot to sign him, and those signings don’t happen until the deadline so your 5th round guy doesn’t use what the 4th rounder got to inflate his price.
As for the rest, my gut tells me there is a 50% or better chance of signing Krol, and a less then 50% chance of Leland and Dyson, but I have nothing to back any of that up.

they are still scouting players during summer leagues
here’s a few links
Arkansas senior to be pitcher Mike Bolsinger talked to the Razorback Nation on Tuesday about numerous topics including his summer league ball, his future with either the Razorbacks or the Oakland A’s and the Razorbacks recent run in the College World Series.
Bolsinger is playing summer league ball in the Texas Collegiate League in his hometown of McKinney, Texas. He has made two starts both in front of Oakland A’s scouts.
Mike is currently waiting on a counter offer from the A’s before he will make his decision on whether or not to return to Arkansas or move on to professional baseball.

47th rd Roller leads the cape cod league in slg %
“Someteams called me around the 13th round and a little bit after that,” hesaid. “Money-wise, we could never get to an agreement. What I wanted togive up my senior year, they weren’t willing to pay. It kind of putsfuel to the fire. So I’ll come out here and try to have a good summer.Play the game the way it’s supposed to be and play hard. It’s a win-winsituation now. I’m two semesters from graduating (business managementmajor).”
I've reread the roller comment a couple times.
I hope the "Moneywise part of the quote is him explaining why he didn’t go earlier, and not about the A’s not signing him. The A’s desperately need more power in the system.

Part of it could have to do with Selig and slot recomendations
All of the players left to sign for the A’s are either looking for over-slot money or are late round picks who the A’s want to watch in summer ball. Word around the league is that Selig is not signing off on over-slot deals yet out of fear that it will mess up negotiations with players who might consider signing for the slot amount.
Rumors have surfaced that some teams have actually completed over slot deals but are waiting for the league office to approve the contract before they can announce it. So even if the A’s had reached a deal with these guys it’s likely they wouldn’t get it approved untill closer to the signing deadline in August.
Seeing as Wolff is known to be buddies with Selig it’s likely that they haven’t really started serious negotiations with the over-slot guys knowing that they can’t announce the deal now anyways. Long story short, I wouldn’t expect to hear much more about signings for another 3-4 weeks.
Yeah
There is a rumour that a small market central team had come to terms with it’s 4th round pick but the Commissioners office has refused to sign off it until the deadline. Monumentally stupid but then not out of character. It is possible that a deal has already been agreed with Leyland or Krol but any big overslot signings will probably not be announced until the deadline.
A's signed second overall pick Justin Marks for $375,000
Marks was a third round (#92) pick. He is a LH pitcher from Louisville. 6-3 195lb
07’ 2.67 …….. 9-2 ……..
08’ 2.37 …….. 9-2 …….
09’ 3.77 …….. 11-3 …….11.38 K/9……. 3.09 W/9…….
"Gratuitous gesticulating together sounds even better"
I think Stassi signs
First pick overnight. The A’s knew damn well what he was asking for. The 4th round pick is unprotected. No way they waste their 3rd highest pick. I am pretty confident they will sign him.
