GOG 2009 #30
I can say without a doubt that this is the highest elevation GOG ever (at least until net access on airplanes becomes more common). Hello from 5000m (17,000 ft) in the Atacama desert! Of course, whenever I'm up here, the only thing on my mind is A's baseball...
Heading into the second half of the season, we can hope for a more watchable and winning type of A's baseball. I'm even willing to let the green and gold start from a blank slate; at this point, I'll be happy for just a good half of a season. The best way to start any half season is by hosting the Angels for a four game set and sweeping them out of town. Not that I'm going to predict an A's sweep for my GOG entry. Come on, I'm still in the thick of the race.

GOG #30 :: Start the Second Half Right! (34 points possible)
Four game series vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim -- July 16-19
UPDATE -- answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 3-1 LAAAAAA
- The pitcher we all love to hate hasn't faced the A's yet in 2009. Predict Lackey's IP/ER/K [2 points each] 9 IP, 0 ER, 6 K... hurrrlll
- Rookie pitchers in the second half, do they turn back into pumpkins? Predict the earned runs allowed by Cahill, Mazarro, and Anderson [2 points each] 3 ER for Cahill, 4 ER (only!) for Mazarro, 0 ER for tough-luck Anderson
- Bobby Abreu has 19 stolen bases, and has been caught only 3 times... Seriously? Will he successfully steal a base against Oakland? Will he get caught stealing? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] 0 SB, 1 CS
- The Angels lead all of baseball with a .284 team batting average and feature five everyday players hitting over .300 (Rivera, Abreu, Figgens, Hunter, and Izturis). Name an Oakland player who hits over .300 for the series. If you think that no one on the A's will hit .300 over this four game series, then you can put that as an answer. [3 points] no one got this right... Oakland's .300 hitters for the series are Cabrera (6-for-15), Cust (3-for-8), Powell (2-for-3), and Crosby (2-for-4)
- With Vlad and Hunter on the DL, and Juan Rivera day-to-day, how many HR will the Angels hit in the series? How many HR for Oakland? [3 points each] 4 HR for the Angels, 3 HR for Oakland
- Casilla continues to be pretty disastrous coming out of the bullpen. Does Geren bring him into any game where the score is two runs or closer? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] nope, Casilla pitches the 9th inning in two losses, but neither was close
- How many innings pitched for Jason Bulger, who has been the workhorse of the Angels bullpen this series? [3 points] 2.2 IP for Bulger
- Showcasing Matt Holliday for the trade deadline -- How many RBI for him in the series? [3 points] 4 RBI for Holliday
- So far in 2009, Giambi has 48 walks and only 50 hits. Will he have more walks or hits for this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] 2 walks and 2 hits... it's a tie. The house wins! Except for the people who guessed tie; they win too.
Game 1 matches Dallas Braden against Ervin Santana and it starts up at 7:05 pm. Post your entries...

Low scores on this one. I scolded oblique for a pessimistic prediction of Lackey's pitching line, but we all saw how that one turned out.

Your Scores
Victory for GOG #30 is shared by three players, and of course nevermoor is one of them. Congratulations to A'sfaninNC, adragon, and nevermoor too!
Also, we haven't had any new players in a while, but I guess the GOG all-stars fANpost inspired some folks. Welcome robbo650 and JLopez (and stranahanahan, who played just once before, back on GOG #13).

since we're on the topic of south america and great heights...
¡felicitaciones a estudiantes de la plata! last night, crowned champions of the copa libertadores with a fine, fine game in which they came back from 1-0 as visitors to a 2-1 victory which finally and rightfully awarded juan sebastian “la brujita” veron with a chance to hoist a cup (any cup… albicelestes, i’m looking at you…) as leader of his team and representative of the kind of futbol argentina can and should be proud of.

but that’s the past and we’re her to talk about the future… as you were!
don't care if i ever get back.
