Public Enemy Number 1 Jack Hannahan Sent to Seattle

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Mariners acquired Jack Hannahan for minor league pitcher Justin Souza.  Souza had a 3.35 ERA in Double A, while Jack Hannahan...well he had been doing what Jack Hannahan does-play defense and frustrate on offense. Souza seems like a decent return for Jack. In a strange way, as much as I hated Jack, I think I'll miss him.  What about you guys? Are you sad that the Jack Hannahan era, no matter how frustrating it was, is finally over?

I'd love to see everidge.

As for hannahan, can’t say I’ll miss someone that bad offensively. Surprised we got a half decent prospect for him. Maybe there’s hope we’ll finally be able to get something for crosby.

Man

Don’t know where to put this but…I can’t believe that Royals trade for Betancourt. Say what you want about BoCro, he is CLEARLY better than Yuni, on both sides of the ball. Even if we paid his whole salary, if we got a couple interesting arms for him from the Royals, that would be something.

The Royals gave up literally nothing, though.

Daniel Cortes had legal issues, command issues, and general makeup issues. Derrick Saito is a midget. Crosby is worth more than Betancourt.

…just saying if the return is only that, I’m not sure I’d deal Crosby unless they were taking on his entire salary. The word “though” shouldn’t have been in my original post; makes it sound like I’m defending them. It’s still a stupid deal by KC.

Pretty nifty little trade.

- Gets rid of Hannahan
- Opens up a spot on 40-man roster
- Gets a nice little swingman type that off-sets the loss of Italiano & Webb

Very surprising Beane was able to accomplish all that. It’s moves like this one, the Kennedy deal and the Hairston deal that give me a little hope that Beane still cares about this team…

A Complete Aside

Whiteshoes, I know exactly how you feel.

I would bet (without a whit of empirical evidence) that A’s fans are more in tune with their minor league system than any other MLB franchise. Maybe it’s because we have the trademeister himself as GM. Maybe it is because us small market clubs have to develop talent from within. Maybe it’s because our major league team sucks so bad that all we have to brighten our day is the prospect of a brighter tomorrow.

At any rate, we AN readers actually know the names of most of our minor prospects. We follow their careers in a reality-TV sort of way. We deep down hope that every one of them suceeds.

Good luck to Hanaranahannahan. May your bat grow bigger in Seattle.

by redtopcowboy on Jul 11, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe it's because

the A’s fans you know are hard-core fans on this site, while the fans of other teams you know are just random casual fans that you meet wherever. I don’t know about other teams, but I assure you that hard-core Mariners fans know their farm system as well as we know ours. I suspect it’s the same for every team.

by iglew on Jul 11, 2009 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

AN might have something to do with it. Did other teams have a good blog like this years ago?

I’m not sure how you would get the empirical evidence as numbers of people online would be a bad comparison for Oakland vrs. other much bigger city populations. I would agree that the more your team sucks the more you need to look to the future to give yourself hope. If your the Yankee’s in the pennant race each and every year your going to be talking about what FA to sign or who to trade for, not who the top 10 prospects are going to be next year.

by OmahaHi on Jul 11, 2009 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it might have something to do with Moneyball...

A lot of A’s fans (like myself) didn’t pick up the book because it had something to do with business or whatever, we picked it up because we liked the A’s.

Of course, Moneyball discusses a lot of player development stuff in an interesting way, which makes a lot of A’s fans who read it want to know what’s going in in the farm system.

It’s not the only factor, but it got me into minor league baseball, which got me into BP, which got me here, and doing a whole bunch of sabermetrics stuff.

by nomorequada on Jul 12, 2009 12:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Hannahan got a bit of a bad rap on AN,

in that compared to Donnie Murphy, Bobby Crosby, et al, his defense offset his hitting more than his hitting offset his defense. And I admire him for overcoming alcoholism to be productive. That being said, the A’s need hitting and Hanny ain’t it.

Nico, do you know when a team makes a trade

if they give the other team all its information they have gathered over time on that player? Are they trading paperwork also? For instance is/does Billy tell the other GM things they have tried with them at different levels and times in minor league ball, original team pre and post draft scouting reports, internal memo’s about tendency’s , private team background/psych checks, and make an real honest effort to help the other, traded too team, get all they can out of the player and understand them when he changes teams?

I could see how if a G.M./Team made trades that way, more teams would want to deal with you and place a higher value on possible player upside.

by OmahaHi on Jul 12, 2009 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Good question; I actually don't know the answer to that

Do players have a “cumulative file” and is it forwarded with them when they change teams? I kind of doubt it; I would guess it’s just medical info that gets forwarded, not scouting/development related stuff, but it’s a great question.

I was thinking about the most painful move Beane could make last night.

I just wanted to prepare myself for it so it doesn’t catch me on some Roto ticker by complete surprise. What I came to was a deal to send Suzuki to a contender, probably to the Angels. He’s my favorite player on the current team, but I’ve viewed his presence at arms length and haven’t become to attached. Anyone think that a catcher might pull in some decent prospects at the deadline, or is he not really that much better than average and we just over value you him because he is the only bright spot in the current offense?

What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.

Kurt not going anywhere

The A’s are looking to sign him long term. They don’t want to go to arb with him considering how much Mauer will make as a FA in a year.

by Arcman on Jul 11, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Obviously he would bring in some prospects

He’s remarkably consistent and of catchers who qualify, he’s ranked 5th in wOBA. He’s not an offensive force, but he’s average – and for a catcher that’s good. There really aren’t a lot of good ways to measure a catcher’s defense, but I don’t think anybody would disagree when I say that he’s quite good.

But why trade him? The A’s have decent replacement level depth at catcher, but after Suzuki, they’re all just replacements. He’s young and cheap and as long as Geren doesn’t grind his legs down (like he is now…) then he should be a cornerstone for the foreseeable future.

Our most valuable trade chips are Holliday, then a large gap, then Cabrera and Kennedy. After that… not much. If a contender was desperate for a reliever, I wouldn’t be opposed to sending Bailey for a B hitting prospect. He’s good, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of teams still overvalue relievers.

by NateHST on Jul 11, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd rather see what we could get for Casilla.....

Bailey is untouchable at this point. We may get a C+, B- type prospect for him.

Suzuki is an A for the forseeable future

Catcher is one of the hardest positions to get offensive production from. Zook is one of our best hitters, and to actually get the level of production we’re getting from him is a huge plus. He’ll be a cornerstone of our teams for years to come.

by Orodawg on Jul 11, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

You guys are awfully confident about Suzuki sticking around.

I was semi-joking about trading Kurt Clutch, but if there’s anything I’ve learned is thats its to not put it past Beane to trade a guy in his prime. Hell, just look at Ramon Hernandez.

Seattle gets a very cheap league average third baseman, and the A’s get an arm with some upside and decent K rates.

LOL at Cust.

You are correct

My favorite team is a fucking embarrassment to all true A's fans and they make me sick to my stomach on an almost daily fucking basis. But being a true fan, I will ride this pathetic bunch of losers out and hope that they get better in 2010

by Trainman on Jul 11, 2009 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

The age of Cardenas

I’m not a big fan of this trade as Hannahan was a 2 to 2.5 WAR average major league starter because of his defense. Kennedy is a free agent after the year and we do not have a viable third baseman besides Cardenas on the roster, so unless we sign Beltre or another third baseman our 2010 starter will be Cardenas.

I think this means they'll go out and get a 3B

even if not, I doubt it would be Cardenas, certainly not to start the year. Hannahan would have definitely been the best in house option but he is not a 2-2.5 WAR player….

Why don't you think that?

To be a two win player you only need 600PA with his defense + 2.5 runs = or > his offense. Not hard with his glove.

I agree with this

I’m not going to complain, as Hannahan is not the A’s long term 3B solution, but if this signals any or all of these things:

1. Pennington and Everidge are going to be getting some time at the position, to see what they can do
2. More vets are on their way out, especially the sub-replacement level ones
3. Beane will acquire a legit 3B improvement

…I’ll like the results. But, analyzing this trade in a vacuum, I’m not a huge fan.

3.35 would put him top 7 in ERA in Midlands AA league.

he’s only played a few seasons so he could have lots of improvement. I was happy to get ANYTHING for Hannihan let alone that. If we could get single or double AA scraps with half the upside of Souza for Gaimbi, Garci, and Springer I would be estatic. I think Cabrera and Kennedy should bring more.

I am a Hannahan fan,

so I’m sad to see him gone.

If it’s true that Gallagher is the PTBNL in the Hairston trade, we will have no players whose name begins with a six-letter palindrome.

and second (I skipped to bottom so sorry if anyone mentioned it) could Souza be the PTBNL in Harriston deal?

No, because it's a pitcher with MLB experience...

All signs point to Gallagher, with Simmons as the backup plan.

It's still not Souza...

If it was, the Padres would’ve made sure Beane could get Souza first. We wouldn’t have had half a week in between the trades.

The A's also picked up former White Sox reliever Dewon Day if you haven't seen already...

He’s assigned to Midland. I like that move—Day throws about 96 and has a wicked slider. Could be a good pickup.

Hannahan is starting for the Mariners today.

He’s still got his batting gloves on from the A’s (they’re green and white with the #22 on them).

I'll miss my hometown boy

Good luck in Seattle, Jack!
Incidentally, I heard this news at the beginning of Extra Innings in the car last night – I’d missed all of the game, tuned in to hear the recap, then Buan came on and mentioned that Hannahan had been traded several times as part of his usual long, rambling preview and that we’d be discussing the trade later in the show….but leaving out a few salient points such as to what team and for whom. Finally towards the end of his monologue he threw in “to Seattle” but still didn’t bother to mention whether it was for Ichiro, a bag of baseballs, or some minor-league pitcher whose name Robert had forgotten to write down. I wasn’t surprised to find out that it was the latter, but really, Robert, there is such a thing as taking the unscripted and conversational style of broadcasting too far.

The Buancast presumes that you've been listening to the game.

I remember back in my RAF days tuning in after a game I’d missed and listening for 20+ minutes of discussion about the game before anyone mentions even who won. This happened on numerous occasions. Once you miss the Ken-and-Vince highlights clips, you’re pretty much SOL.

Jeff on Lookout Landing

wrote an entertaining summary of the Hannahan deal from the M’s perspective.

Hannahan’s offense is Oakland in a nutshell. He has a good eye. He […] has a pretty good idea of the strike zone and doesn’t go fishing very much. But pitch recognition doesn’t mean very much if you don’t make a lot of contact or hit for a lot of power, and that’s precisely why we were just able to land him from a division rival for a geode and some Bubble Tape. The overall package of Jack Hannahan as a hitter is less than the sum of the parts. It seems like he should be better than he is, but he isn’t, and at 29, he’s not about to kick it up a notch.

The folks in Seattle aren’t terribly excited about the trade, but they’re basically pleased with it. Evidently, their next best 3B after Beltre went down is even worse than Hannahan.

You can’t always upgrade with quality. Sometimes you just have to go from really bad to bad.

The picture caption is amusing, too.

The third comment is even more pithy:
Then again, you look at Oakland’s current roster, and they’re full of guys like him. Good plate discipline and command of the strike zone, but fuck they just can’t hit.
