DLD 7/1/09: Less about baseball, more about baseball movies
Or the one that isn't in production right now. The New York Times has a story headlined In Skittish Hollywood, Stars Can't Save "Moneyball" and the LA Times counters with its more insiderish Sony's Amy Pascal speaks out about "Moneyball". Both identify the problem with the original script: people who are still alive being portrayed by actors, saying and doing things that did not actually happen exactly the way the script depicts them. This is a problem that many other filmmakers have conquered successfully, but it does help to have the cooperation of the people who are going to be portrayed as characters....and the NYTimes indicates that it was at least in part Major League Baseball that objected to the historical liberties. The second draft -- the one we haven't seen, the one that caused Sony to put the movie on ice -- was apparently much more of a documentary/reenactment. The LAT story says one of the bits in the first script that director Steven Soderbergh wanted cut was the part where the 4-year-old daughter of Scott and Bitsy Hatteberg fields a ball that her dad missed and the "Ron Washington" character suggests signing her up.
Also, Monte Poole has a D-Train update.
That's about all I've seen today and it's time to head to the ballpark!

I love Dontrelle.
Even though he plays for another team, I love him. Maybe a switch to the Oakland ballclub might help that anxiety. It’s about 10 minutes from where he grew up, right?

I wouldn't mind him, but frankly not for the salary that comes along with.

I'm betting he's outright released before the end of season.

I'd sign him to a minor league deal IMMEDIATELY were that to happen.

That’s always good news. I like him. A lot.

Dunno if this has already been posted, but
apparently, if you’re a member of River Cats Connection, you can read some Q&A sessions with some of the players. The latest one they have up is one with Cunningham. No hard-hitting questions, though; just simple “favorite player?” and “favorite movie?” type of questions.

The Moneyball movie
Well, it just sounds nuts to make a $58 million documentary.
by bear88 on Jul 1, 2009 9:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
it was, um, kinda doomed from the start, I'd say.
The thing about it is, though, it has the potential to be something very special, simply because of that. If it had floated by, it would’ve been either really wonderful or gloriously horrible. No in between, I don’t think. But, been wrong before…

It wasn't really a documentary.
Just a story surrounding the 2002 club.

I read both scripts.
The first one was interesting and clever, but I can see how the liberties taken with what actually happened might be a problem. The second one just wasn’t that interesting a movie.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about Beane's temper
but it always hurts to hear these kinds of stories about people you respect:
“One of my friends used to work parking at the Coliseum and one night he was in the VIP parking area and a guy in a BMW flies up and doesn’t have a parking pass. He tells this guy he can’t park here, etc. The guy starts yelling and screaming at him, demanding to speak to his boss and saying he is going to have him fired for even asking for a parking pass and storms off after my friend won’t relent. Yeah it was Billy Beane.” (David R.)

The best part about the Coliseum
Is that it, probably more than any other stadium in sports, perfectly embodies the city it resides in. It’s got its rough edges, and it’s pretty unseemly from the outside, really, it’s a ghastly looking place, but on the inside it’s got a ton of character to it and it’s a place where you can have a lot of fun.

Interesting observation by Bailey:
Springer is the king of the bullpen, though. Everyone kind of follows his lead.

Am I going crazy?
Wasn’t there a front-page diary by Nico that is no longer there? Didn’t even get to read it before it disappeared.

You saw no diary there (waves hand)
This not the diary you are looking for.
Anyhow, I saw a glimpse of it, something about external factors that you can’t control (the weather, acts of God, bees attacking the field) and internal factors you can (not running into the wall and breaking it, not straining your back reaching for the alarm clock) and how the A’s seem to say all the injuries are “external” and nothing they can do about it, and how that’s a bad way to go about things.
Or something like that. Don’t remember the exact terminologies he used (my vocabulary is much smaller).

It still shows if you track through Nico’s activity. He probably temporarily took it down for editing or something. Or maybe just an accidental glitch.

Rangers in financial trouble?
Tom Hicks’ Sports Group Defaults On $525 Million In Loans
I’m a bigtime Liverpool FC fan ( english soccer ) and the same guy who owns them owns the Rangers ( and the dallas stars ) and it’s being reported on the liverpool pages that the rangers couldn’t pay their players salaries and had to take a loan from MLB.
This is good news for me, since it might make these bastards sell Liverpool.. But I wonder what kind of effect it might have on the AL West. I guess Nolan Ryan might get more control over this team…

of the Rangers letting Ron Washington get away.

I was checking out the D-train link, when this caught my attention
the following description almost gave me seizures of PB cravings:
If you’re craving something buttery, the deep-fried Reese’s are delectable. With crispy edges, the dough made from Lorimer’s own recipe adds a moist, delicious twist to the melted peanut butter and chocolate within.
I don't always blog. But when I do, I prefer AN. Stay thirsty my friends.
