"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

BA reporting the first 10 Picks

Link

Nine of the first 10 picks look fairly certain, with the only question coming at No. 9:

1. Nationals: San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg.
2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.
4. Pirates: Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez.
5. Orioles: California HS righthander Matt Hobgood.
6. Giants: Georgia HS righthander Zack Wheeler.
7. Braves: Vanderbilt lefthander Mike Minor.
8. Reds: North Carolina righhander Alex White.

10. Nationals: Stanford righthander Drew Storen.

At No. 9, Tigers are deciding whether to spend big (California HS lefthander Tyler Matzek, Missouri HS righty Jacob Turner), smaller (Texas HS righty Shelby Miller) or a little smaller (Arizona State RHP Mike Leake).

At No. 11 the Rockies will take the most signable high school pitcher, and that Arizona State righthander Mike Leake is not in the equation.

Crow AND Matzek out of the top 10.

Scheppers out of the first round seems likely.

by grover on Jun 9, 2009 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I worry about it too

but hes been pitching well this year even though early on he was tenative with his curve.

Extra fresh after a nine-day layoff, Scheppers was sititng at 96-97 mph for much of the game and he touched 101 mph on the Saints’ radar gun. Scouts told manager George Tsamis after the game that they had him touching 98 and 99 mph.

From BA’s draft blog. His change up is 88 mph and could be plus. I think he could really be a dominant #1 starter. Crow hasn’t improved his change that much this year and if he doesn’t I worry about him. Crow also has a tendency to lose control and nibble.

Hope we pick a good first rounder

I didn’t like the Weeks pick last year, but I also didn’ t like how the draft bloggers knew it would happen before it happened. I’ve been avoiding all the prognosticators in hopes of being surprised.

Latest rumor from BA
The Royals could take a college pitcher as well, with Kennesaw State righthander Chad Jenkins first in line if they decide to go with a player who will sign for slot. Oakland is waiting to see if Kansas City does step out and go above-slot, in which case the Royals could take Southern California shortstop Grant Green or North Carolina prep catcher Wil Myers. If Green is there, Oakland will take him, though sources also indicate the Athletics could opt for indy ball righty Tanner Scheppers or California prep lefthander Tyler Matzek, which would make for an interesting negotiation.

even if they trade him, they need to re-stock badly. passing on a pick like that is not a good idea, with the way their pitching depth in their system is.
