Sweeney to DL, Barton called up
Athletics placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 3, with a sprained left knee.
The A's decided to make the move after he reported little progress in his injured knee Monday. Rajai Davis will continue to play center during Sweeney's absence.
Athletics recalled first baseman Daric Barton from Triple-A Sacramento.
Barton will take Ryan Sweeney's place on the roster. He has a .245/.365/.385 line in the minors before the recall.
A's continue their strange strategy of holding onto players who are injured on the active roster for as long as they can before DLing them. After all, who likes playing with a 25 man roster? 23 will do.
Barton has been hot lately. April he was frigid, May he was warm and June he's been hot. We will see how he does if he is put into the roster, or if he is just to rot on the bench.

Barton cup of Coffee
Barton will only be up until Buck comes off the DL. Barton is just to give Giambi some rest.

Sadly, prolly true.
Good to see that they’re gonna start fucking with the guy who was their #1 prospect.

Meanwhile we'll suffer with watching Davis in the lineup.

as long as they keep winning
who cares?
Davts hasn’t hurt the club lately, so there’s no reason to hate on him,
I wonder who the A’s consider the backup CF at the moment.

I think our W-L record with Davis in the lineup
is pretty good now, what with the recent streak.
By the way, Roto botched Sweeney’s name again. What else is new?
I don’t like to get too overfussy about typos, since it’s not really that important to make occasional mistakes, but Rotoworld really pushes the envelope. It’s so bad that it makes you want to distrust their information.

they do seem to make a lot of em, don't they.
Never heard of spell check…
But hey, then again, they do have to keep track of thousands of players in different sports.

"Rajai Davis will continue to play center during Sweeney's absence."
Damn it! Sweeney down, Barton up, how about Barton in center field? How bad could it be?
(BTW, no one need spend their time spelling it out for me. I know.)

does this burn an option for Barton?
I thought 2009 would be Barton-free.
Thank Gawd we have Rajai still around….

2009 is already an option year for Barton
he “burned an option year” when the team sent him down at the end of spring. So really, it has no effect on his option status from this point on if the team brings him up and sends him back down again 3, 4, or more times for the remainder of the season. He’s already used an option year for ’09.
(In hindsight, I think part of the team’s reason for doggedly sticking with Barton for all of ‘09 was the realization that it wasn’t worth burning an option year to send him down in August, even though it was obvious by then that it wasn’t a “flukey bad first month” of the season. In ’08, the team preserved an option year by allowing him to work through his struggles the entire time at the big league level).
Long story short, he’ll still have two option years after ’09.

It's more the issue of him getting consistent at bats so he can
continue developing. Strange decision to bring him up.

Why not Patterson here?
It would be a chance to see how he handles CF. Certainly he couldn’t be any worse than Rajaj, even after accounting for defense.

So is Rajai.

He couldn't be useful as a temporary fifth outfielder/backup 2Bman?
We only have 4 outfielders until Buck gets back. One of them just got hit in the head, and one of them is Cust. This makes me nervous.
