3b of the future?

Josh Fields?

A former top prospect who has just been replaced by Gordon Beckham. I think he'd be relatively cheap, hes 26, and he did flash his potential a couple years ago. In 07 he hit 22 bombs in 100 games, or 373 abs, and last year was held to just 14 games. He's stumbled out of the box this year and obviously hasn't lived up to his own hype which is why I think he'd be a perfect fit.

I've read a little about his defense and all I can find is that hes a little above average. Would you sacrifice the D for a potential .275 20 3rd baseman? I think its worth the risk.

I have no idea what it would take to get him from the sox, but it doesn't look like much. I understand he isnt a great player but he's better then what we have and seems like a realistic oppurtunity for us. It can't get any worse....

He's only 26 and as we've seen sometimes the development takes a little longer. Pena, Ludwick, Cruz.

I say give it a shot, 3rd base is the weakest postion on the roster and in the lower levels of the organization. The A's don't have to give up any elite talents and have a chance to upgrade a poor postiton. If he hits .235 and 12 bombs its an upgrade.

If he hits .235 with 12 HR

He’s really not an upgrade. He doesn’t walk a lot and his defense isn’t near as good as Hannahan’s. Hannahan’s not the answer, but unless Fields can prove he can actually tap into that potential, he’s a Crosby clone that played 3B instead of SS.

I meant that as a worst case scenerio

Obviously we’d be hoping for a better player

Fields better than anything A's have now

Young power hitter off to a slow start this year. A’s have no power hitting 3bs in the organization. How could this not be an upgrade?

look at the K/W ratio for your answer

206-59 that’s scary bad. And the power is coming in one of the best HR parks in the bigs. Why do this when you may be able to get a much better prospect at 3B later in the summer?

or promote cardenas

as Beane is now clearly willing to consider.

I know, I know.

And for a guy who follows Ronaldinho around like a puppy, it kinda sucks he’s not there any longer.

Well the exact quote was

“there may be a time we’ll consider him at third”— from the Lowell Cohn interview three days ago.

Point being they have Weeks coming up through the system and Cardenas— who is hitting 385 or so at AA. They both can’t play 2B. Cardenas is closer to the big club in terms of offense— I would think that there is certainly a possiblity of a September (or possibly earlier) call-up with him playing at 3B this season. Beane never says these things lightly. He said he was intrigued by the possiblities in MAC, and whoops! there are all 3 of them in the rotation by June 1.

by jasonthea on Jun 8, 2009 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Cardenas

I’d rather keep him at 2nd until he is forced to move. His bat plays alot better at second and he loses some of his value if he has to slide across to third.

Completely agree

I’d rather the A’s try Donaldson at 3B than Cardenas.

And unless Donaldson proves he can't play C I'd rather keep him there.

To me it looks like the 3B position won’t be solved in house.

I was in Chicago to see game four of the OAK/CHW series and...

he is losing favor there. My friend (big time Sox fan) told me he K’s too often and is not really reliable. The icing on the cake with his comment was that Fields K’d to end the game. We have enough of that here already.

Hannahan is better than Fields

Defense baby, defense.

Hannahan has consistently been worth more WAR than Fields has.

Even when he flashed his potential in ’07, he was only worth 0.4 WAR in 100 games. For comparison, Hannahan was worth 1.3 WAR when he played a full season in ’08, and has been worth 0.3 WAR in ’09 over 35 games.

Yes, I am defending Hannah Montana here. Fields hasn’t really flashed anything at the MLB level.

Carrying Hannahan is like basically carrying a specialist fielder.

Sadly he’s the best option we have. Fields isn’t a good enough player overall to replace him.

by OldhamA on Jun 8, 2009 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Brings up the ol' "can a decent hitter learn to field?" (e.g. Cust)

versus “Can a decent fielder learn to hit?” (probably, Brooks Robinson).

Just off the top, no science, I’d say Hannahan has a better probability of getting to 15 HRs/70 RBIs a season than Fields has a probability of upgrading his defense to Chavez/Hannahan stature.

Chavez was horrible defensivly

then he became awesome.

I'm aware of that.

Hannahan isn’t awesome defensively at 3B.

by OldhamA on Jun 8, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

He's pretty awesome

He has a UZR/150 of 30.9 – that is pretty elite defense.

by DeJay on Jun 9, 2009 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it is much easier to teach someone to field than to hit.

So I’d rather have a great hitter with no glove skills yet, than a great fielder with no hitting skills. Especially because the latter outnumber the former 5-1.

you can teach "range"??

Cust vs Rajai in the outfield?

That’s what make Ellis so much better than the GG winners. He has (or, ….had….TBD) such great range that he gets to ball others would “oh-lay”. Add in accurate throwing (not a given, and you may have Steve Sax in no time) and it isn’t simply repetition to create excellence.

Given that a person was totally unfamiliar with baseball, I would agree that it’s much easier to teach fielding than hitting. But going from a .210 or .190 hitter to a .256 may be more possible for a player than turning a butcher in the field into an asset. Wash said he was taking on Hank Blalock as a “project” (“he’s all mine”) even as a manager, at Texas.

No luck.

Zobrist seems to have redefined his swing using a new

batting program so perhaps you can improve as a hitter. That said improving a player as a fielder is much easier – they have to be committed to getting better of course, but teaching footwork is a simpler task than teaching a guy to recognise pitches and put bat on ball.
