GOG 2009 #20

Sorry about the absence, and thanks to nevermoor for covering the GOG duties while I was away. I missed you all. Also, whoah... new fANpost editor.

Star-divide

Getting back to baseball, the A's will face the Minnesota Twins for the first time this season. Oakland is on a nice little winning streak, but it is one thing to shut down the White Sox and Orioles offenses, and quite another thing to keep the 2009 superman version of Joe Mauer off the basepaths. Will Outman continue to live up to his name? Will the Athletics continue to pile on the first inning runs? Or was this wonderful week all just a dream?

GOG #20 :: Twinkies For Dinner (34 points possible)

Four game series vs Minnesota Twins -- June 8-11

UPDATE: answers added below in bold

  1. Series outcome [3 points] 2-2 split
  2. Joe Mauer is OPSing a Bonds-ian 1.319 after missing all of April. Will there be any game in the series where the A's manage to keep him from reaching base (only counting the games he starts, of course)? Does he have any games with 3+ hits? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Mauer reaches base every game, but no 3-hit games
  3. Which team gets more innings from their starting staff? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] unbelievably, it's a tie, with 25.2 innings for each starting staff
  4. Liriano has an ugly 10.32 career ERA against Oakland. Does he manage to turn things around and throw a quality start (6+ innings, 3 or fewer earned runs) in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes
  5. Giambi's .883 career OPS against the Twins is considerably worse than his overall mark. Predict Jason's BB/H/RBI for the series [2 points each] 1 BB, 1 H, 0 RBI
  6. Anthony Swarzak, age 23, is making his 4th Major League start. So far, he has pitched 17 innings with an ERA of 4.76, WHIP of 1.471, and 1.5 K per BB. Predict his IP/ER/K against the A's. [2 points each] 3.2 IP, 3 ER, 3 K
  7. The other knuckleballer :: How many innings does R.A. Dickey pitch in the series? [3 points] 0 innings for Dickey
  8. Which A's hitter contributes the most Win Probability Added for the series? [3 points]
  9. Dwelling on negatives :: Which A's reliever issues the most walks? Which A's reliever gives up the most earned runs? [3 points each] Casilla and Bailey tied with 2 walks each. Casilla had the most ER (4).
  10. Climbing out of the cellar :: How many games out of third place will the A's be after this series? Or, if you think they will make it into third place, how many games ahead of the Mariners? [3 points] A's finish the series 2.5 back from Seattle and LAA.

Game 1 of the series starts at 7:05 pm, so post away. Let's go Oakland!

Results

Sort of a low scoring round, but with everyone fairly tightly clumped. I think that some of the questions lead to the low scoring, as no one predicted that R.A. Dickey wouldn't make an appearance, and question 3 went out of play when the two teams got the same number of innings from their starters.

Overall scoring statistics

  • mean = 5.93750 points
  • standard deviation = 3.53724 points
  • mode = 6 points

some comments about the new fANpost editor
  1. I didn’t realize that it was going to add all of those links up in the body of the fANpost. I mainly just wanted to get my tags added down at the bottom.
  2. In the previous version of the editor, I would add events for each game iin the series, using a overlay on my browser window that would show up and let me select games. This time, it found game 1 of the series for me automatically, but when I tried to add the other games the overlay window showed up, but contained the SBnation.com homepage, not the list of Oakland games to select from.
  3. I should probably email these comments to someone, instead of just leaving them here. I’ll do it later, I think.
