Garrett Atkins now

No inside sources have suggested this aquisition, but now would be a great time to trade for Garrett Atkins.  A's would be buying low, he's hitting .195, but is a .290 lifetime hitter.  Another rh power bat for A's line-up.  Colorado's other 3b Stewart has 11 HRS and Colorado is buried in the standings so Atkins is expendable.

The A's unexpected improvement the past 7days creates the decision of do the A's try to win now or just develop for the future?  Hiring Giambi, Cabrea, Garciappara and Holilday suggests Beane wants to win this year.  Now that starting pitching suddenly looks good, it makes sense to fill the glaring hole at 3b.  Not just a 1-year fix --  Atkins is signed, 29, and durable.  Some package of involving a pitcher(s) Gio, Gallager, Simmons and maybe a 2b?  Beane should do this before Atkins starts hitting and his price goes up. It would also make Holliday happy.

I’d rather see a platoon of Hannahan/Petit/Crosby/Nomar. Maybe (just maybe) you acquire Atkins on the cheap… I mean Pennington for Atkins, cheap.

Atkins - No Thanks

1 year/$7.05M (2009), arb in 10’

7 million for a .200 hitter – IN COLORADO! no thanks

He isn’t signed. I would never give up Gio, Simmons, or Galagher straight up for him.

Ian Stewart – I am sure Beane tried to get him last year with the Holliday deal, my guess is he is an untouchable

I actually agree.....

Atkins is a MLB hitter who will snap out of it and would be better then a platoon in my opinion. The problem is the Rockies actually think he is still worth a lot and he is salary is high. I just cannot fathom the A’s standing pat at 3B right now. Kennedy proves that there are MLB level players out there to be had…….for cheap……even if he was lightning in a bottle….

No

If Holliday’s had trouble outside Colorado, I don’t have much faith in Atkins not going through the same things – especially changing parks and leagues in the middle of the season.

Holliday

Troubles? Really? Aren’t we over the thought that Holliday can’t hit outside of Colorado? I know I am. I’m a believer.

by Colorado Fan on Jun 7, 2009 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Go look at Atkins' career Home/Road splits

Home: .330/.386/.516
Road: .254/.324/411

He has the same number of HR home/road, but more doubles and triples and way more singles at home, in fewer PAs.

If we could get him for practically nothing, and the Rockies would pay some of his inflated salary, I’d be okay with it. But giving them even one talented pitching prospect would be a terrible move.

Oh, I completely agree

I was just commenting on “Holliday’s had trouble outside Colorado” thing. I’ve followed Atkins a little bit here in Denver, and he’s a streaky, streaky hitter. If you can acquire him for close to nothing, it wouldn’t be the worst thing ever.

Cabrera
Kennedy/Ellis
Cust
Holliday
Giambi
Suzuki
Buck/Cunningham
Atkins
Sweeney/Davis

I would never give up a Top15 Prospect for Atkins.

by Colorado Fan on Jun 7, 2009 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Never said he can't hit outside Colorado

He’s rounding back into form and that’s great, but overall there’s still going to be a drop not playing half your games in Coors.

I don’t consider Atkins as good as Holliday and if Holliday had a month or so of trouble adjusting to a new park and league, I don’t want to pick up Atkins expecting him to just step right in and perform for a team trying to contend for a playoff spot. At the least, whatever he does offensively would still be better than Crosby/Hannahan/etc. The price? I don’t know about that.

Zig - Just saw this trade rumor on msn

Brad Ziegler, RHP, Oakland Athletics
Billy Beane is always ready to deal, and he’s particularly ready to deal when his team is in last place. Beane also knows that it’s best to trade relievers when they seem to be peaking, because their performances can turn south quickly. (See Billy Koch for Keith Foulke.) Come to think of it, we should probably include Andrew Bailey and Michael Wuertz on this list, too. Ziegler hasn’t matched his near-perfect 2008 season, but he has closing experience and could be a great right-on-right situational reliever.
Contract: $405,000 in 2009, not due for free agency until after 2014.

In that same article it mentions Jhonny Peralta

I would rather have him then Atkins………3B and SS, also he might not command a lot in a trade with an overcrowded Indians IF……..he could bridge the gap on the left side of the IF until a better solution presents itself.

I'd love to have Peralta. Trouble is that he's so overpaid

The good thing is that he’s a solid player. (Not worth what he’s paid, but a big upgrade over what the A’s have.)

DO IT.

If someone is offering a good deal for Ziggy, do. it. now.

Good, but non-elite relievers are a dime a dozen, and Ziggy isn’t at that elite level.

Agreed

I really like Ziggy because he offers something that we don’t usually have, which is just a consistent dependability, but with all the young pitchers we have on their way up, nothing lost dealing him…esp if the Duke comes back as a RP or if he knocks Outman into the pen…

by SeanR on Jun 7, 2009 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would Duke knock Outman to the pen?

I mean we do have a dearth of 95 mph flame throwing lefties in the pen but Outman has proven that he should get to stay in the rotation. Coupled with him throwing more than 150 in in two of the last three years. It would make far more sense to limit the innings pitched of either Anderson or Cahill, with Cahill especially needed to be watched due to his injury history.

That article also has Peralta as trade bait

Much rather plug him at 3rd than Atkins

Plus CLE needs pitching so one of the AAA guys and a reliever should get it done. He is signed cheaper and a better player with AL experience.

Atkins hits more HRs away from Coors Field

The past few years Atkins has hit for higher average at home, but more power on the road. Conclusion is he would do fine at Oakland.

by BlueMoon on Jun 7, 2009 9:39 AM PDT reply actions

You have discovered the main reason this will never happen

Fieldingbible.com has him as the second worst 3B in the period 2006-2008 at minus 42. Forget about his splits, he can’t field.

by Hang Man on Jun 7, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree, somewhat

Atkins is a much better player than he’s getting credit for on here. He’s not a star, but he’s alright. The problem is just the 7m and arby eligible status…I don’t want to be paying him 8 m a year to be slightly above league average.

by SeanR on Jun 7, 2009 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions

No he doesn't

He has 47 HRs career at home and on the road, but has about 75 more career PAs on the road.

He also has hit more doubles, more triples, and more singles at home.

His career line on the road is crappy — .735 OPS, 170 points below his home numbers.

atkins stats has gone down and not worth anything. I am not sure i would even do a Crosby for him since the A’s would owe money. Atkins may have been a steroid abuser. Look at his stats and you will see a power surge until testing took place. A big red flag for me just like Ortiz in Boston.

Well, no, but still...

Peralta’s got a reasonable contract through 2011 if desired, but I dunno.. seems like Outman + Ziggy is WAY too much for a guy who is only managing a .670 OPS this year (yes, sample size, but hey)

Why would you want to give up a 94 mph fireballing lefty, who is proving to be an effective starter?

Outman certainly has a future on the mlb club either as a starter or as a back of the bullpen lefty reliever, unless he gets hurt. To my knowledge Outman has never been hurt. Gio on the other hand will probably have a hard time transitioning from the rotation to the pen. He walks too many batters, has a shakey make up, and profiles far far better as a starter. If you are going to trade one of our upper minors starting lefties I would trade Eveland, Gio, Braden, Outman, Anderson in that order.

Still rather have Atkins, but Peralta still upgrade -- Kouz-------at SD good too

Perltas batting average has been dropping annually. He also plays in a hitter’s park.
At this point Chavez, Garciaparra, Hanahan, Crosby,Petit —all unreliable. Trading for a major league 3b would send a good message to team and fans.

by BlueMoon on Jun 7, 2009 2:03 PM PDT reply actions

I think we need to rethink the 800 ops assumption

It seems to me that we all want an 800 OPS guy for corner outfield and infield spots.
That idea gained traction during the steroid era.
I think if we could get a guy who plays major league average defense at 3b. and OPS’s .750ish. It would be a MAJOR UPGRADE over what we have gotten from 3b for the last few years. If we can get that production without giving up something major, I’m all for it.
I think Crosby is gaining value as a major league utility guy. If the A’s could trade Crosby or Cabrera for Atkins, with assumption of contracts on each side. I say go for it. If Colorado wants a prospect, give them Sweeney. I think his power would translate well in Colorado.

They're called RUNS for a reason.

by connie mack on Jun 7, 2009 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

Atkins sounds like a much worse than average defender at 3B

and with a career road OPS barely over .700, it’s not clear he’d meet the .750 standard, anyway.

I read...

Someone else talk about picking up a 3b from Pittsburgh, who have the position blocked by Laroche. If we could send one of the above named starters who have had trouble securing a spot in the rotation (which, until now hasn’t seemed like it should be a tough task) in some kind of package deal I like that a lot better than gambling (expensively) on Atkens.

by IChaseFrisbees on Jun 7, 2009 3:32 PM PDT reply actions

You want a struggling 3b who will probably hit closer to their career norms?

I’d rather choose one of the best defensive 3b in the majors over the worst. Ok, so the price is a bit more (in prospects and money). I still think Beltre better fits this team.

What about Josh Fields from the Chi Sox

He was a top prospect and is out of a job now with their youngster coming up. He plays 3rd and maybe needs a change of scenery. I don’t think he’ll cost much and lets be honest, anything is better than what we have now
