AN Community Service: Time To Help Jon Wilhite

Two months ago today, the A's began their season. Two days later, a car crash took the life of Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two of the three other passengers in the vehicle. The lone survivor in the car, Jon Wilhite, was a teammate of Kurt Suzuki's at Cal State Fullerton and faces a long, expensive road to recovery - and what "recovery" means is not yet fully known.

AN would like to support the efforts of Kurt Suzuki and his wife Renee, who have set up the Jon Wilhite Recovery Fund to help pay for the significant expenses that lie ahead in what figures to be a long and difficult recovery process for Wilhite. I want to emphasize a focus not on the amount of money raised, but rather in the number of individuals who choose to participate. Not everyone can give $100.00 but everyone can give $5.00 if they wish to participate. If enough of you are generous enough to take the time to participate, we will undoubtedly raise a fair amount anyway.

If you would like to add to the number of ANers participating, and would like to support Jon Wilhite's recovery, what you need to do is simple. Mail a check, payable to John Wilhite Recovery Fund, of any amount, to

Jon Wilhite Recovery Fund c/o
1152 Euclid Ave.
Berkeley, CA 94708

I will total up the number of participants, and the amount raised, before sending the donations on to be deposited in the recovery fund account.

My advice is that if you intend to participate, send your donation now rather than putting it on your "I'll get to it later" list. As daily life gets in the way, it's easy to forget the things you kept being able to put off until tomorrow. I'll report back in a couple weeks when it's time to send the donations on; for now let me thank, in advance, those who will participate and thank Kurt and Renee, Orlando and Katie Cabrera, and many others who have stepped up to help Jon Wilhite in the wake of this tragedy.

Jordin Sparks sings around 10:00pm tonight and word is there also might be a baseball game 4 hours before that. See you then.

I should add, for my piece,

that I will match the first 20 $5.00 donations with a $100.00 donation. That way, giving $5.00 turns into giving $10.00 for those folks.

Since Nico is already matching the first twenty $5.00 donations,

rather than matching the next twenty, I’ll do something a little different: I’ll match the first ten $10.00 donations. So giving $10 turns into $20 for those folks.

(P.S. to Nico: Let me know if and when ten $10 donations have been made.)

Will do. Thanks, iglew!

And if anyone wants to match the first 5 $20.00 donations, step right up…

I can do that...

…I’ll match the first five $20.00 donations for Wilhite.
I have a fulltime job with no threat of layoff in FY 09-10. My mortgage is safe. I am grateful.
Let me know when you have five twenties, Nico.

The fact that Wilhite is still alive is much more incredible than you may think

Yes, he survived a horrendous car crash but there’s more to it.
I have mentioned before I have a close friend in his first cousin, and he told me that Jon survived an “internal decapitation.” Essentially his skull separates from the spinal column. The numbers are inconclusive, but doctors have said that no more than 13 people have ever survived this in a single year, with numbers likely being much lower.
This man comes from a wonderful and supportive family and I hope we can all just give a bit to help his recovery…

Wow. I have a close friend who is a neurosurgeon at UC Irvine Medical Center,

where Adenhart and Wilhite were taken. The saddest thing, to me, was that while my friend said the incident was notable for the press attention it received, he said it was otherwise far too typical – in other words accidents this gruesome, often resulting from drunk driving, are seen in his ER all the time.

I actually don’t know what the “realistic best-case scenario” is for Jon Wilhite’s recovery; do you?

actually i've heard close to full recovery, believe it or not

I’ll double check again with my friend. But the family has been cautious with good news and they’ve been told mostly good news, i’ll keep ya updated…

p.s. for those collectors, they are also doing an auction on the A’s website with tons of MLB memorabilia, including lots of A’s stuff old and new. Proceeds go to the Wilhite fund.

But I’m sending $20. Wish I could give more.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.
