DLD 6/4/09: Knowledge is Power
You're supposed to learn something new every day. Today, make it baseball related. Find out more about Vin, the disabled list, or even Sports Blog Nation. Here is the whole enchilada and a side of fun.
Mazzaro's Debut: Dave Cameron crunches the numbers from Vin's debut. It's from Fangraphs, so be ready for a deluge of graphical analysis. Final word from Dave is that Mazzaro has significant adjustments to make if he's going to continue to be successful in the major leagues.
Dissecting the Disabled List by Team, Position, Year, and Injury: This should be required reading for every A's fan. You will be shocked to see that Oakland doesn't top every chart. Realize that the data looks at the years from 2002 to 2008. We're middle of the pack for DL usage, even with the parade of pain from the last two seasons.
Enhancing Your Reading Experience: a.k.a How to Read This Blog. Ever wanted to post a fireworks pic in a game thread after a win but couldn't figure out how? Maybe you want to find new comments in a FanPost without all that tedious scrolling. A quality FAQ-type article from Red Reporter (SBN Reds Blog) will have you caught up in no time.
Best MLB Players Taken at Each Draft Slot: More of a frivolous frolic through fantasy land than a draft preview of substance. Still quite fun. Did you know Manny Ramirez and Frank Tanana were two best players selected at the 13 slot? Also of interest, in 1981 Oakland used the 92nd pick (our pick again this year) in the draft to select Curt Young. Maybe this time we should go for a batting coach instead.

David Carradine’s apparant suicide
Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series “Kung Fu” who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

that was fast
wikipedia already claims it is the most famous case.
I don’t know, it does seem weird to commit suicide when are that old and don’t have some sort of crippling disease. He was found naked, but in a closet? Maybe it was the only place to tie the cord to? Really strange and really strange to think about, not the best thing to do while alone either.

while looking for a picture
of Lou Brown from major league in the game thread i found this. It old and deals with the Giants but still pretty funny and has a current member of the A’s.

not in the least
Reasons:
1. Live too far away to have two Cali teams.
2. They f’ed up my other fav team the Pirates
3. They couldnt beat the Angles in the WS in 2002
4. They just suck big donkey…
I just found it and it had Raj Davis in it
Bad spellers of the world untie.
as to your point number 3,
that’s when I found out that I hated the Giants more than the Angels. I didn’t know it until then, but it was an interesting discovery.

Re: Point 3
Interestingly enough (to me anyways) I was rooting against the Angels then and I wasn’t even an A’s fan at the time. Just something compelled me to root against them.
"Swinging and missing to me is like 'Jesus, what happened?'" Scott Hatteberg
I think I can rationalize
wanting the Giants to lose in ‘02 (notice I didn’t say wanting the Angels to win). The Angels didn’t really become the Angels until after winning the Series, and winning our division in four of the next six seasons (twice clinching at the Coliseum). Up until then they had been to the playoffs three times and had not won a single series, so they just weren’t that hateable.
Now the Giants…if they had won, well here in the Bay Area, we would have never heard the end of it, and back then I cared about such things.
If they were to play in this year’s World Series, I would just prefer they both found a way to lose.
I'm here to talk about the past.
It's high time we made a stand
and shook up the views of the common man.

Today is June 4
67th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
"Until Holiday comes around, I will refer to him as Coors Light." Ak_A
My Grandpa was there
I miss him bad right now, he passed away last August. Here is an excerpt from his personal diary (a first person account of history):
Brief summary of these days if it’s possible. June 4 exactly a month since May 4 and the Tulagi wound up. Contact made of 4 Jap carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and 10 transport. They attacked Midway Island by the air first with the intention of crippling them so much the rest of the ships could blast the short batteries. Attack was beat off and all this time we were heading right for them.
Our attack groups from the Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown were launched. Task Force Seventeen- Yorktown, 2 cruisers and 5 tin cans was the support force of 16 and we really supported them.
Our planes attacked them around noon (were launched at 1052 when they were 120 miles away) We sunk one carrier.
As our planes were returning we were attacked by the other two Jap carriers. They were looking of the Enterprise & Hornet but found us- the support force instead. At 1406 the shooting began. Torpedo planes- most of them- were shot down before any damage done. But the dive bombers raised hell. They only tried to get us when we tried to protect the Yorktown which was all the time. I saw a near miss on the Yorktown. Water really went up. After the attack the Yorktown was smoking quite badly. Bomb went down her stack. All together she was hit with three bombs. Admiral Fletcher transferred his smoke covered flag over to the Astoria.
wow, that is great.
Thanks for posting that!
Bob Geren, on 8/2/07, on the success of Alan Embree as new interim closer: "What can I say,... he's been our Steady Tremendous Bullpen Man"
Thanks
The section in his diary about Midway is much longer. We all knew he had it, but none of us were allowed to read it while he was living.
I always thought there must be something horrible written in it, but when we finally read it… It was more a literal telling of things that happened over the course of his days in the military starting at the day he decided to enlist, December 7th 1941.
My favorite part was at the very beginning:
In the event of my death and this diary is saved from destruction, it is my fervent wish that someone send it to my mother.
Things I learn from Athletics magazine:
Travis Buck’s nickname is “Simba.” And he would sing a Backstreet Boys song if he had to audition on American Idol. Learning these things accomplished nothing, but it was amusing.

More CSNCA classic A's
This game is on right now. Top of 5th, Cleveland ahead 5-4. Gaudin is pitching for the A’s, Shannon Stewart in LF, Milty in CF (this was before he got DFA’d), Swish in RF, KenDoll catching (very gritty).

I watched the bottom of the 9th only
What an at-bat by Chavy with two outs, took the count full and then singled. Clutch! I think that is kind of lost in the excitement of the 2 HRs.

Ron Washington article
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/03/SPC7180CI7.DTL
The word on Ron Washington, the former A’s coach who was a favorite among players and fans, was that he wouldn’t buy into the A’s way of running a team or take kindly to every suggestion from general manager Billy Beane.
Jose Reyes has a torn hamstring
and there’s some discussion about whether Crosby or O-cabs could be a viable replacement.
Some of the commenters on mlbtraderumors (which I imagine to have flappy heads like the Canadians in South Park), are suggesting a Holliday + O-cabs blockbuster, but I don’t see anything in the Mets farm that they would be willing to part with that the A’s actually want. So for a more modest Crosby/O-cab salary dump, what do you think we could get? Do we dare?
If somebody sees this, and we get a DLD later today, can you share this article?

Great story about Wash’s job security. Love that guy.
Save Rajai Davis
I miss Washington
My favorite thing ever was watching a spring training game where Wash was wearing a mic.
He was coaching third and talking to Ray Fosse and Greg Pappa during the game.
Jeremy Giambi ripped a triple and Wash congratulated him. Giambi responded, “I f%^&ing pissed on that ball!”
(insert awkward silence)
Wash half laughed, “Jeremy, I am miced.”
Must see TV if ever there was such a beast.
was that also the game where Mulder pitched for the first time on tv?
He started his first batter off with a changeup and Washington said “kid can PITCH”? I loved that.
AN was so much better before I got here.
Oddly enough the internets aren't very helpful with this question.

You could cut down the tree as well
Or paint it a new color.

a little extreme to cut it down.
I also heard painting trees was bad for them because the tree can’t breath, although I did see some special tree paint online but I think it was for a different application and doesn’t come in colors.

Find the guy that did it.
Kill him.
Grind the body up and use it as fertilizer.
Oh, also, use a citrus based cleaner/degreaser and then power wash the tree.
