This Just In - A's Late Rally Falls Short

Yes Mr. Korach, the Tigers tried to give this one away. Sadly, the A's were not in a receiving mood.

Thus not even a sloppy effort by the American League Central leaders- nor another late rally- were enough for the A's to sneak away with a second straight victory before a lively crowd at the Coliseum (ha).

Of course when you manage only three hits through the first eight innings, chances are it's not going to end well.

Star-divide

Gio Gonzalez dug himself a 2-0 hole just two batters in. After a walk to Curtis Granderson, A's-killer Placido Polanco- who entered tonight's game with a career .388 average against Oakland- homered down the left-field line.  The Tigers ran themselves out of a possible third run when Marcus Thames hesitated rounding second base on a double by Ryan Rayburn (3-for-3), and ultimately found himself in no-man's land between third and home. Both runners ended up at third base, with Rayburn being the odd man out.  Gonzalez struck out Brandon Inge to end the inning, his first of five K's.

The A's loaded the bases in the bottom of the first off tonight's starting- and winning- pitcher Armando Galarraga, thanks to a pair of walks and an error by shortstop Adam Everett.  But a 5-4-3 double play grounder off the bat of Kurt Suzuki killed the threat.

Detroit went right back at it in the second, putting runners at second and third with one out, only to make its second baserunning gaffe in as many innings, with Magglio Ordóñez caught napping off third base on a grounder to Adam Kennedy.

The blunders continued when Rayburn dropped a fly ball in left. Unfortunately for batter Ryan Sweeney, it was in foul territory.  Rayburn atoned for his miff with a run-scoring single in the third to make it 3-0.

Sweeney recorded the A's first hit, a triple to right with two outs in the fourth, and scored on Jack Cust's single to center to cut the lead to 3-1.

Gonzalez exited after just 84 pitches through five, flirting a little too much with danger for most of the game, but allowing the heavy-hitting Tigers only the three runs on seven hits. His counterpart was just a little better at walking the tightrope; Galarraga left after retiring one batter in the seventh having given up one run despite walking six batters.

Rayburn doubled with one out in the sixth off Santiago Casilla, and took third on a wild pitch.  Inge then dropped a base hit between three fielders to score Rayburn.

A Polanco- there's that name again- RBI single stretched the lead to 5-1 in the ninth. It was an insurance run that went unused, but not a bad plan anyway what with the nightly tease sure to occur in the bottom half.

Just like clockwork Mark Ellis stroked a two-run homerun to make it 5-3, and when Kennedy singled, the A's had the tying run at the plate in the person of Orlando Cabrera with only one out.  Funny thing about teases; they're...teases, and Cabrera grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the suspense.  But was there really any doubt?

And so the A's turn the page on their third straight losing month (13-15) with an eye on a series win tomorrow afternoon.

Ahhhh

Another pathetic performance.

Another late tease.

Another loss anyway.

Another game where Geren will excuse it and be positive about how they were SO close to winning.

the typical script for A's games

which is why i dont watch/listen to/go yo as many.

i can guess and from looking at post game interviews and box scores, it seems like the A’s play the same brand of baseball every night

Yep. This is where I am.

Totally ambivalent. Yeah, I watched Monday’s game, and was pleased they won… and had zero faith they’d take that into Tuesday night.

Back then, my idol was Bugs Bunny, because I saw a cartoon of him playing ball - you know, the one where he plays every position himself with nobody else on the field but him? Now that I think of it, Bugs is still my idol. You have to love a ballplayer like that.

I was actually somewhat pleased with his post-game comments.

He was sugar-coating less than usual and seemed genuinely frustrated.

Another Tired Game

The Geren Watch:
1. Travis Buck is brought up from AAA, sits on the bench. Cust plays instead and screws up in the field early in the game; he does get a dink hit to drive in the one run.
2. Gio looks like he’s settling down in the fifth, so of course he’s pulled.
3. Geren tempts fate with the team’s three most inconsistent relievers in a row, Casilla, Springer and Edgar. Fate wins, Detroit scores two runs and the A’s wind up losing by two runs.

Bleah.

Was at the game again

Sadsadsad. It’s like Geren learned nothing from his sterling managing performance last night.

The only game note I have is that John Cena (of WWE fame) was behind the A’s dugout, and one section away from me. All game long a parade of skanky, bottle-blonde maybe-teens kept trying to get his attention and get pictures with him. His arms were so muscular that they looked stumpy in comparison to their length. Really, really weird. He also had a “little person” in his entourage at the game (midget, for those less PC, I guess) that had a huge black beard and platinum blond hair. It kinda made everything surreal.

Go Ellis?

That sounds more entertaining than the game itself.

Sounds lkike Hornswoggle-TM...

…was with Cena. He’s a character on WWE television. There, now the world knows that I watch wrestling when I’m not obsessing about how lame the A’s are.

And, was at the game last night with Richwol1, um yeah, that was a great way to spend a Tuesday night.

I saw that!!

And it was definitely more entertaining than the game, especially when the “little person” whipped out his camera and the skanks started posing.

Why was Buck not in the fucking lineup tonight?

And why oh why, does Geren still have a job? This is getting to the point of total black comedy……not the color mind you. I’m not racist, just a Geren hater!

he’s clearly better than what we have in the lineup, but it don’t f**kin’ matter.

do you really think Geren makes these decisions?

Yes

I think Beane didn’t trust Howe and Macha enough to make these decisions unfortunately he trusts Geren enough to give him a free reign. Do you really think Beane would have told Geren to keep Cabrera and his sub .300 OBP at leadoff for so long? Do you think Beane would have told his poster boy Cust that he needs to be more agressive and swing at more first pitches?

Disagree.

If you call up a hitter who was absolutely tearing it up in AAA then it’s not exactly intelligent to sit him on the bench for a prolonged period so he can cool off and lose his timing… unless you want him to fail.

If you call up a reasonable defensive RF option but refuse to play him in favor of a clearly subpar defender in RF instead, this is not an intelligent decision… unless you want the team to fail.

If you call up a young LH batter who was tearing it up in AAA and refuse to start him against a RHP, in favor of DH-ing an aging and continually injured RH batter whilst simultaneously starting a worse defensive player in the outfield as a result of this line-up decision, this hardly qualifies as an intelligent decision… unless you want the team to fail.

There is no defensible position of which I can conceive, based on logic or reason at any rate, for not starting Buck in RF last night. There is no 3 day grace period on calling out a manager for this kind of stupidity.

by still bills kingdom on Jul 1, 2009 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because of Nomar

He was magically healthy for a night, so they wanted his RH bat in against a LHP. And thus they could not DH Cust whose bat they want in the lineup. Logically stupid.

Why can’t he send Cust to triple A? Or whoever. Clearly we don’t need more outfielders…. Cabrera could use about a week off, Nomar is day to day everyday, Giambi looks like he’s going to break. Why does he keep Crosby around if its not to occasionally take a day at SS? Why on earth did Geren leave Nomar in to run last night?? How do you not at LEAST throw Buck out there to run for the guy with disintegrating calves?

by sox1844 on Jul 1, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I am finally at the end of my tether with Geren. He says that Buck would have been in the lineup if Nomar wasn’t available. RHP on the mound. Buck on a hot streak. Nomar with one foot in the grave. Cust forced to play the field. I am not sure how Geren thought this was a good idea. His explaination why Buck isn’t starting just proves his ineptitude.

by DeJay on Jul 1, 2009 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Beane needs to cut Nomar

just so Geren can’t be tempted to play him anymore. A team going nowhere this year needs to play anyone other than Nomar Garciaparra (or Jason Giambi, for that matter).

Is Gio a two pitch pitcher?

I think I only saw him throw a couple pitches that could be classified as “not fastball” and “not curveball”. I’m supposing he lacks a reliable change-up, because it seemed like Suzuki wouldn’t deviate from the fastball, fastball, and more fastball pitch sequence (especially noted in the first). In fact, searching my memory I recalled seeing a pitch in the low-80s (maybe a change-up?). Seemed as through the Tigers were able to gear up for the fastball in some situations. This could spell disaster in Gio’s next start in Boston. Let’s hope he or Suzuki can mix up the pitch sequence a bit more.

And while the A’s ended up losing 5-3 anyway, I would like to ask why Edgar Gonzalez was brought in to pitch for the 9th. A few innings prior, Ziegler was warming up in the bullpen with Springer, so I would’ve throught an apperance by him was expected.

One last note, Orlando Cabrera is not a good baseball player anymore.

I am Ray Fosse's infatuations with Clay Wood and high-definition television.
