6/29 Minor Athletics
It was the end of the rode for Weeks as his streak ended, just in time for him to start a even longer hitting streak. Great game from the A's today. Hopefully we can keep it going, but I won't get my hopes up after watching that Giants series. Here's how our system fared today.

I was following Midland on Gameday today
and for a minute there I thought they might have come back. They quickly scored 2 in the 9th, and with one out and two on Donaldson had a great i think 10 pitch AB that ended in a walk. Corey Brown then came up with the bases loaded, and neither him nor Spencer could get it done…

I guess it's time to halt the Weeks-to-Midland talk

Shoutout
Well played.
If the A's can build around Holiday, Furcal, Cust, and maybe call up 2nd baseman Wes Childs at some point in the year, they have a shot to take a weak AL West. -- jameersju post on ESPN.com

Any update on the Grant Green/Max Stassi talks?

by DyeLongJustice on Jun 30, 2009 9:31 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not really
Specualtion is Green will set a new A’s record for bonus $$$ to a draft pick (previously $3.2 million to Mark Mulder). Stassi is supposedly looking for $1.5-$2 million.
So $5 – $5.5 million to land both.

We shall see if the A's are still willing to dish out the cash
on player development like they said they were going to.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

Brett Wallace
Heating up… hitting 310+ in june with a 870OPS. 2 for 2 today with a HR so far. Get it done Billy.

very good hitter, but not a 3B
unless he changes his body type significantly and quickly. he’s probably a 1B in the majors, which takes away a lot of value from him.

can I just have a very good hitter please!

Seriously!
I dont care if hes a bad 3rd baseman. He can mash.

Exactly.
Shift whoever the SS is (Cardenas?) to the left a bit. Ellis can handle it, being like the best defensive 2B in MLB.

a left side of Cardenas and Wallace would be the worst in the league.
Wallace isn’t a better prospect than Chris Carter, or at least not by much. I’d like him on my team, but considering our circumstances, I’d rather have Weeks.

Cardenas won't play SS so the point is moot

I keep seeing people say this
But do we know Wallace can really mash?
I mean, don’t take that the wrong way, I like Wallace, and I’d be fine with him as a centerpiece for, say, a Matt Holliday trade, but…
He’s hit .291/.337/.443 in AAA this year, and he’s almost 23 (which wouldn’t make him old or anything, but he ain’t young by any means). He did hit really well last year, but the knock on his defense is legitimate. So I guess what I’m saying is, I like him as a player, think he’ll develop a plus bat, but he’s not a) especially young and b) really tearing it up, so why do so many people seem to think of him as this slam dunk?
I mean, if you could acquire Wallace, or a four-month older corner outfielder who’s supposed to play solid defense hitting .301/.356/.569 in the same PCL Wallace is playing in, would you take the second guy? Because that’s Aaron Cunningham.

He mashed in College...
to a tun of 1.200+OPS last 2 years.. mashed his first year in the minor to a tune of 960 OPS.. this year he hit 840 in AA. He started out slow in AAA (Rushed) But is not backing to hitting 300+ in June and OPSing 880 this month. He can mash.

He's going to hit for a high average...
but he’s definitely not a lock for 30 home run seasons. He might have trouble hitting 20 if he plays in Oakland. I think some people here have a little bit the wrong idea about him. Good power, far from elite.
by AgitationStation on Jun 30, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He could probably hit .280 with 25 HRs,
which would be fine with me for a decent defensive 1Bman. I agree you shouldn’t count on him to stay at 3B but he’s a good enough hitting prospect that I think he’d have plenty of value to Oakland even if he soon moved from 3B, to 1B, to DH. Who knows where Doolittle (position), Carter (position), and Cust (team) will end up by 2011?

Man, Cardenas is really making me look like an idiot
for all that pushing of him to 3B. Still not worried though. Give it time.

keep him in AA for the year
let him learn the position and get comfortable in a league he is used to. if he literally has nothing to prove, then yeah, move him to AAA, but until he gets really solid on defense at 3b, i’d leave him in midland.

DL Giambi if you have to…or Nomar
by asyouwish33 on Jun 30, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dig this
If the Giants can figure out it’s more worthwhile to play a young guy with some potential like Nate Schierholtz over some retread, it’s time the A’s got some perspective on this season and realize they ought to do the same. If Everidge hits, we have a young, cost-controlled bat worth playing for a few years. If not, we…..I dunno, wasted a Jason Giambi resurgence on the bench, maybe? Everidge played third for Midland, too….

Man alive, the dude has 901 OPS between Midland and Sacramento!

He won't...
They aren’t going to DFA Giambi or Nomar to bring up Tommy Everidge. Just like last year they wouldn’t move Emil Brown aside to bring up .550 slugging at Sacto Joe Gaetti.

Or Nomar needs to go on like the 60 day DL. I have never wished for an injury more.

storey's stats this season
19.2 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 26 K
Thats good for a 0.46 ERA, a 0.406 WHIP, a 11.06 K/9 and a 26.0 K/BB rate. Insane.
At what point we stop attributing this to small sample size, and attribute it to actual skill? Anybody know anything about the guy?
He was a 31st round pick last year… I’ll take it!
