Giambi: One Out Away From .199

I love the facial hair, and man those were some good times.  But, uh, Giambi can't really hit any more.  i know with Crosby and Hannahan and Davis and so forth in the lineup, Giambi doesn't really stand out.  But it's kind of interesting that G seems to get a free pass.  Yeah, he walks and he'll hit a home run now and then.  But he plays a pretty lousy first base and he's about to be hitting .199.  Would it make sense for the A's to simply cut him and put Barton there every day?  You know the defense would improve tremendously, and it's hard to believe Barton wouldn't hit, I don't know, .220 but without the walks.

Its hard seeing Barton not out produce Giambi right now.

And play a much better 1B.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

Barton should be given the 1B job right now.

We need to use the rest of this season to determine if Barton is going to be our 1B of the future.. Maybe if Giambi were a full time DH and only had to concentrate hitting he could get that average up. But Cust should be our full time DH and never be allowed back in the OF so its hard to see Giambi being our backup 1B/ LH pinch hitter off the bench.

I agree he's not that fun to watch anymore

But he’s still got an OBP of .340, which is above average, and he’s sporting a BABIP of .224, which is quite low, even for him. He should hit a little better here on out. But still, I’d like to see Barton more.

by NateHST on Jun 30, 2009 12:02 AM PDT reply actions

The funny thing is

That while the OBP may be respectable to a degree, he’s still looking terrible at the plate quite often. While a BABIP of .224 would normally be considered quite low for a player, it’s getting to the point where he’s just hitting into the shift almost every time up. At some point he needs to either go the other way, or fact the fact that he’s going to be hitting .190 for an entire season.

by MrMoneyBaller on Jun 30, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly -- I wonder what the league average BABIP would be

if teams got to use 6 infielders; that is, 3 on one side of the diamond. Probably around .224?

His BABIP has been low every year since like 2005.

Not .224 low; more like .250-.260ish

Which, if you add the .30 points, and he kept walking at the same rate, instead of .200/.340/.370, you have .230/.370/.400ish which is respectable (thought not for a power hitting first baseman). Unfortunately, the more I think about it, the more it has probably has to do with Oakland’s large park and even larger area of foul territory. Who knows if it will rise or not.

by NateHST on Jun 30, 2009 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it's got more to do with Giambi hitting into the shift than it does Oakland's large park.

If you look at his hit chart on MLB.com, he’s got a crapload of groundball outs to the 1B side.

well now I think we know

Giambi is in age-related decline. I don’t think it’s an issue of cold weather or even injuries…hey, it happens to everyone sooner or later.

I even see a decline in my own bloging.

a sad sad day...

I was all set to say, ‘come on man, you haven’t lost a step,’
but then I saw the missing ‘g’ and a tear came to my eye.

Never liked the Giambi signing

He is blocking Barton’s development and occasionally takes the DH option away from Cust. I’m not saying anything new here, but I’d like to see Buck, Cunningham, Petit, and others from Sacramento get a nice long look in the second half while Giambi and some other old guard move on.

Beane brought the band back together this past off-season but their new album flopped.

This thread convinced me that Barton should be the regular 1B, too.

Seriously. I resisted the notion all season long, but after the first several posts in this thread it turned a light on in my head, and it makes sense now. Totally agree.

Back then, my idol was Bugs Bunny, because I saw a cartoon of him playing ball - you know, the one where he plays every position himself with nobody else on the field but him? Now that I think of it, Bugs is still my idol. You have to love a ballplayer like that.

Count Me In As Well

Giambi just ain’t got it anymore. His bat is almost gone and his glove is following close. Give Barton the gig and see what happens.

Barton is blocking Barton

When you mess your pants the way he did last year you are blocking your progress. He still needs a diaper change because he’s not smelling any better this year.

He is still on pace for 22 HR's and 80 RBI's...

and I am very biased and pro Giambi because he was one of my childhood heroes!!!
