Weekend Minor Athletics

So--my brother and I have been lazy this week. Let's see how the little boys did the last couple of days. There were a lot of really great performances from Carter, Cardenas, Weeks, Spina, Matt Smith, and others...

Star-divide

Sacramento:

Saturday, W 11-5

Pennington 2B: 4-5, 3 R, 2 2B, RBI

Carson CF: 2-5, 2 2B, 5 RBI

Cunningham LF: 2-3, 3 R, HR, RBI, 2 BB

Buck RF: 3-5, R, HR, 2 RBI

Simmons (W, 3-4) 7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K   Three pretty nice starts in a row. Let's hope that he's turned a corner this season.

Sunday:

Final    1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9      R   H   E

Cunningham DH: 1-2, 2 BB

Eveland (L, 6-1) 4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 K

Demel went .2 IP and now has 2+ IP with 0 ER.

Midland:

Saturday W, 6-4

Cardenas DH: 2-4, R

Brown, C CF: 1-4, R, 2B, 3 K  First game in over two weeks.

Godfrey: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 8 K  Might see a call-up to Sac in the next couple of weeks. Has really performed well over the last several months.

Recap | Box |

Sulentic RF: 3-6, 2 R,

Cardenas 3B: 3-4, 3 R, 2 BB  Batting .352 and at this point is a singles machine.

Carter 1B: 2-3, 2 R, 2B, HR (13), 6 RBI, BB He has some pretty incredible stats right now. He leads the league in R, second in RBI, first in Total bases, first in walks, 5th in hits, third in doubles, second in HRs, and 6th in OBP. Can't wait to see what he plans on doing for July.

Valdez DH: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, K  Batting .318 right now. Midland's team needs to be moved up to AAA...with so many crushing the ball.

Spencer LF: 2-5, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K

Banwart (W, 6-3) 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Stockton:

Sat, L 1-7

Weeks 2B: 2-4, 2B, K  I'll talk about him from Sunday's game

Storey: 1 IP, H, K  Is having the best season of any minor league pitcher. I know he's a reliever and isn't getting the innings of others like Hornbeck, but has been absolutely dominant. Combined 18.1 IP, 6 H, ER, BB, 24 K If he continues to excel, he might be in Midland by the end of the season. Really cool to see of out of a 31st Rnd pick

Sunday: There was another game in High A, final score 33-16

Final    1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9      R   H   E
 Lancaster

Recap | Box |

Mitchell DH: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, 3 BB

Keough LF: 3-5, 2 R, RBI, BB

Weeks 2B: 3-6, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI  Batting .400 in his 22 game hit streak to start season. .400/.481/.711 line. I like the OBP, the slugging will not last, but it shows that he's quite a bit more advanced than high A players. Here's his profile pick on milb.com, Pic  Looks like he's straight out of 1980s...love it.

Desme CF: 1-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, 3 K

Kleen 1B: 4-6, 3 R, 3 2B, RBI

Smith, M 3B: 3-4, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB  Career best game by far. Nice job Matt, upped his average to .241.

Hornbeck: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 8 K  Threw a few too many pitches and didn't qualify for the win.

Friend: IP, 3 K  Having a nice season with 46 K in 41+ ip for a 2007 13th Rnd pick.

Kane County: Played a Double Header on Sunday

Gm 1:

Final    1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9      R   H   E
 Kane County
 0   0   1   0   1   0   0            2   4   4
 Quad Cities

Recap | Box |

Arrieche LF: 3-3, RBI

Christian 2B: 1-3  Appears the A's are trying to make him a more versatile player.

Poirier: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K  Did not get help from the defense

Gm 2.

 Final    1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9      R   H   E
 Kane County
 1   0   4   0   2   0   1            8   10   1
 Quad Cities
 0   0   0   2   0   0   0            2   6   0

Recap | Box |

Coleman SS: 1-2, 2 R, 2B, 2 BB, K   Increasing his BB totals. Has 9 BB in his last 10 games. Good to see.

Barfield RF: 2-4, R, 3B, 2 RBI

Paramore C: 2-3, 2 R, BB

Spina 1B: 2-3, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI  Nice break-out game for the young first baseman.

Haviland (W, 6-3) 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K  Was a 33 Rnd pick last season. With Storey/Hornbeck/Haviland the A's have gotten nice returns so far from late draft pick pitchers

Vancouver:

The young kids went 1-1 over the weekend. On Saturday the noteable performances were from...

Crisostomo RF: 1-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB Has been a nice table starter to start off the season

Leyja 2B: 1-4, 2K

Dixon LF: 0-3, R, 2 BB, 3 K I'd be interested to see if his strike-outs were looking, didn't hit the ball much on Saturday.

Christensen (W, 2-0) 3 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 4 K  Has been coming out in relief to start the season...looking to avoid another injury. Has pitched 6 innings and has 7 ks on the season. Definitely someone to watch this season

From sunday's loss

Crumbliss 2B: 1-2, 2 BB

Dixon LF: 1-4, K

Ramos (L, 0-2) 6 IP, 5 H, R, 2 BB, 3 K

Can't wait to see Carter and Weeks in the future's game. Quick recap and my thoughts, Buck/Everidge/Cunningham are creating a very nice problem for the A's--a glut of patient hitters that need to be tested in the majors. The Rockhounds are absolutely destroying the ball. I am really excited about this Valdez kid, even though he was born in '84, I think the A's have something there. Where he'll play--no idea.

I'm a little concerned about Weeks. All he's doing is putting himself in position to get more injured. Getting on base so much is bound to hurt his legs in some way. If he went 0-whatever it might be good for him to not run so much. Love that kid.

any word/insights on when he’ll move up to midland?

by tas7b on Jun 29, 2009 8:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

At this point

The A’s have a nice little log jam for middle infielders. If he moved up to Midland, the A’s have to figure out what to do with Alex Valdez, who has been crushing the ball as of late and has been batting behind Carter in the Midland line-up.

If Weeks is promoted, I think Valdez would have to be promoted to AAA as well. But then you have the problem with Patterson, Pennington, Petit all needing AB. Maybe Valdez can move into the 3B position for the Rivercats and Everidge can play 1B exclusively.

by asyouwish33 on Jun 29, 2009 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh wow

is it known at all as to whether valdez can handle 3B? and where did this guy come from? is he well-regarded enough to be a trade-bait?

if not, we should do something to clean up the log-jam by somehow moving patterson, pennington, and/or petit. it seems pretty apparent that the club really doesn’t have future plans for any of them.

Valdez came into the season as a bit of a sleeper

Barton back at Sacramento, so

Everidge is stuck at 3B. You are correct, 33, all of a sudden, we have middle infielders who can hit moving up the system. Insert Happy Dance here.

by redtopcowboy on Jun 29, 2009 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Valdez has played over 130+ games at 3B

From thebaseballcube

What is nice about these guys is that they are sort of interchangeable. Valdez can play 3B but has also been DHing in AA to get AB. Everidge and Barton can certainly play 1B and DH. Its possible to get all three in the line-up while still incorporating Cunningham in LF and Buck in RF—even though they should be up with the A’s.

I know we look at this stuff on a day to day basis and GMs have to have a more long term outlook on these things. A good example… a bunch of us (myself included) were wondering when Weeks would be promoted to AA when his hit streak had reached 10 games—-now at 22.

I think the A’s have a to wait a little bit while players in the lower system show signs of potential to allow the A’s to move up guys from high-A and double A and then fill their spot with those rising youngsters.

Side note: Saw this on firstinning.com

The Rockhounds team OPS is .822, the second best is Springfield at .762. WOW!!

Do you kno how Everidge plays at 3B

I mean, if he’s looking solid and continues to hit well in AAA for the next week or so, wouldn’t it be worth it to try him out there with the big club for a couple weeks to see how he handles big league pitching?
That way, if we do trade Holliday for a 3B prospect he could be valuable trade bait, or if we end up with something else in return, we use Everidge there until Cardenas is ready…

I’d take Everidge at 3B easily right now. There are some defensive concerns, but the way we’re hitting, who cares.

But then you have to wonder what to do with Kennedy who is the only consistent hitter on our team right now

by asyouwish33 on Jun 29, 2009 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trade Kennedy?

Is there a team that might want a consistent second baseman?

I like Kennedy, it nice to see someone in our lineup who can hit, but at this point if we can get anything of value for him, I say go get it.

yup

he’s not staying beyond this year, and there’s really no point to keep him around anymore.
Frankly, we used up the best he has, the longer we hold onto him, the more chance his value goes down…

Thanks again for this fantastic series!

Do you know whether Raley Field plays as a hitter’s park or pitcher’s park, or is more neutral? Not that this is like the Dodgersin the 80s developing hitters in Albuquerque and bringing them up to Dodger Stadium, or the White Sox letting guys rip the ball in Denver and then making them play in Comiskey. But since the Coliseum is such a bad place to hit, I wonder if the disappointing performances of some of our prospects result in part from jumping not just from AAA to the majors but from a friendly hitting environment to a hostile one.

by Nick on Jun 29, 2009 8:26 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't know, but if Raley is hitter-friendly, we sure as heck don't need

Jeff Baisley, 198 AB, 0.597 OPS, or
Gregorio Petit, 198 AB, 0.612 OPS, or
Chris Denorfia, 189 AB, 0.686 OPS,

There, that should clear up some space for rising prospects.

by redtopcowboy on Jun 29, 2009 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's a pitchers park relative to the PCL, but the league as a whole is very hitter-friendly

so it’s definitely a big jump.

With stout hearts, and with enthusiasm for the contest, let us go forward to victory. ----Hero Defector Montgomery

Thanks mikeA

And the Texas League is also a good hitting environment.

I think it means the A’s (and, to some extent, their fans) have to be very patient when hitters don’t live up to expectations based on minor-league performances.

I don't see why Weeks isn't promoted to AA right now

Not to “fast track” him, just because he has nothing left to prove or master in single-A ball. He might as well start the AA learning curve now, no?

Cardenas still being there prob has something to do with it.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

Yeah

you have to wonder when they’re going to move the both of them up.
Obviously, they tried Cardenas in AAA and it didn’t work out at first, but you’ve got to think it’s going to happen by the middle of July. I’m still really curious to see what they will do with Carter, I know it’s been discussed around here that the A’s probably see him as a one level a year kind of guy, but he’s starting to get that power back, getting his walks and really has cut down the strikeouts. Again, not that i want to rush him, but I wonder if they think he may be ready…
Man, these guys are making the Blanton and Haren trades look horrible for us!

Isn't Cardenas anchored at 3B now?

Is anyone blocking Weeks from taking over at 2B at Midland?

A's Front Office is not stupid

They see the same obvious things AN sees. There is an enormous amount of dead weight at the top and an abundance of slugging prospects just waiting to move up. From what I see, the Oakland decision makers tend to put off these tough personnel decisions as long as possible, waiting for injury or performance or trade or something to narrow the options and make their decisions easier.

I think we are very near decision time for several players. Perhaps the upcoming Holliday trade will make some personnel decisions easier, but I doubt it. The axe is coming soon. If not, then Oakland risks wasting precious development time for many of its prospects.

by redtopcowboy on Jun 29, 2009 9:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I keep thinking this (A's Front Office is not stupid),

yet they keep acting stupidly so I then wonder. I think there’s a fair amount of stubbornness, and “good ol’ boys network” driving decision-making these past couple years, and those are deadly ways to run an organization.

That’s EXACTLY how I feel too.

Before Wolff, I think everyone here can agree Beane had his hands unfairly tied. But since Wolff, Beane has gotten rid of all strong dissenting opinions and it’s starting to hurt the organization.

There was no other member of the coaching staff that had done more to gain the respect of his players then Ron Washington, yet he was never given a true opportunity to get the manager’s position over Bob Garen, a man who has no respect from his players.

Hell, Carlos Gonzalez recently saying that when he was with the A’s the team had days where they felt they would automaticly loose should have been enough to get Garen fired. Still, Beane keeps protecting his best man by saying “Well, I’ve never given him a competitive team.” Well what the hell is this year then? The A’s have one of the best rotations in baseball and enough bats to have a middle of the pack offense, yet EVERY SINGLE EVERYDAY PLAYER IS UNDER PERFORMING (with the one exception of Suzuki).

What that tells me is Garen has ZERO leadership or inspirational value. I understand he’s nice while Macha could be abrasive, but every player who is underperforming on this team should at least FEEL uncomfortable about themselves or their play time if they aren’t playing at their potential, but instead we see 7 out of 9 bats phoning in game after game.

It always sat wrong with me, even when things were rosy and the A's were winning,

how Billy Beane treated players and coaches and managers as “commodities” rather than as people in a business — no one talks or hears much about Brad Fischer, but the way he was unceremoniously dumped, for no reason, after 30+ years in the organization speaks volumes.

If you treat some people like pawns and others like shit, you shouldn’t be surprised when it all comes home to roost.

Yeah thats why he personally went to the Dominican Republic to woo Ynoa...

and proceeded to convince him that the A’s had a better development plan and would treat him better than other teams that were offering him 20% more money, because he sees players coaches and managers as commodities and treats people like pawns and shit.

In regards to Carter...

Do you think that there is some hesitation to promote him to AAA- more importantly the PCL- because he might have an urge to go back to a similar approach he employed at Stockton?

which was try to hit everything over the wall…

For fear of making a complete fool of myself....wait....too late

I’ll take a shot at this.

From his stats, and from seeing Chris play last year and this year, I think it is safe to say that Chris Carter has worked hard to thoroughly improve his batting skills. By improving his strike zone management and by leveling his swing a bit, Chris has reduced his K rate, increased his BB rate, and his HR rate is increasing each month this year.

Chris is 22 years old in AA. He has plenty of time for further development so that he is absolutely, positively ready when he assumes the starting 1B role for our A’s.

With that said, there is the Rule 5 clock ticking (for Carter and many other top propects). Chris was drafted out of HS in 2005. He is allowed 4 full MiLB seasons before being Rule 5 Draft eligible. 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. By my calculations (please, somebody, correct me if I am completely wrong on this), Chris Carter will be in this winter’s Rule 5 Draft unless Oakland puts him on the 40-man roster.

My guess is that Carter stays at Midland all season, gets his MLB contract this fall, avoiding the Rule 5 Draft, starts next year at Sacramento, and gets a mid-season call-up after Barton finally, for sure proves to everyone that he will never hit major league pitching.

Daric Barton dives into the shallow end of swimming pools. Chris Carter works extremely hard to get quicker, improve his hitting skills, and will be an All-Star 1B for Oakland very soon.

by redtopcowboy on Jun 29, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you're right on

The scouting report on Carter has always been that he shouldn’t be rushed and he’ll be fine — that he simply needs the time in the minors and that rushing him would backfire. I think Carter has a chance to be a special player for Oakland, but not starting before mid-2010 at the earliest.

A level a year player.

Back when Chris Carter was with the White Sox organization, the opinion of Carter was the we was a level a year kind of player.

Beane is good friends with the White Sox GM, so there is a lot of speculation that Carter’s level a year tag got carried over (especially since it seems to be working).

I don’t think it should surprise anyone to see Carter end the year with Midland, no matter how well he hits for the rest of the year..

Yeah, but sticking to conventionalities

if the player is not being challenged at the respective level, is mundane.

The player should make his own track via his performance. Carter is demonstrating the numbers which warrant a promotion. Thus, he should see a promotion to Sacto.

Here's where I disagree.

While Carter’s numbers may warrant a promotion for SOME players, Carter’s lack of power is a sign that he is still being challenged by AA and has something to prove.

Alright, now that Buck is back in Oakland

there’s an open spot in the Rivercats’ outfield. Assuming Hannahan doesn’t become the regular 3B, is it possible that the A’s will shift Patterson full-time to OF (with Cunningham and Doolittle, preferably) and do the IF promotions we’ve been anticipating — Cardenas to AAA to play 3B (with probably Petit, Pennington, and Barton on the IF) and Weeks to AA to play 2B?
