OUTMAN 60 Day DL; Tommy John Surgery a possibility
Just saw on Roto World That Josh Outman Will be on 60 Day DL and may need Tommy John surgery. That Sucks he has been one of our top two pitchers this season and if he needs Tommy John surgery that could seriously derail our young pitcher(knock on wood). I know this dosent really constitute a fanpost but people really dont check fanshots often.Thoughts?

I believe that summed it up very nicely. Thank you.

If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

I also post on Sactown Royalty, the Kings’ SB Nation site, and they have tons of FanShots that get read. Why? Because worthwhile FanShots make it onto the front page. If that happened here, I think more people would post them.

wut... no shit...
Ehhh, this sucks.
Don’t dick around with this. Get him the surgery if he needs it, shut him down for the season, and get him back in good shape next year.
TJS is so common nowadays that if this is handled correctly, he should be back at full steam next year.

12-18 month recovery...Sad thing is his dad preaches some perfect throwing angle and outman modified it and
TJ…..I bet his dad is pissed…
Sad for us, he was looking like a stud we all know what that means = EVELAND NO NO NO…..Come on Gio!
Say goodbye to Holliday for sure now.
This is a video of his brother. Josh had the same mechanics at one point.

Here is a link to the article at Driveline Mechanics where they discuss the Outman delivery. Either way, this news is very disappointing.

After the way I pitched in my game today
maybe I should try this….

That BP interview is fascinating.
I knew nothing about this.
In addition to the parts quoted on the Driveline Mechanics article Nate linked, I’m intrigued by this
DL: Unconventionality aside, were there any disadvantages to the motion?
JO: What’s interesting is that it never really even came up. Nobody was really interested if there was an actual downside. People just thought that it didn’t look right and was therefore wrong and needed to be changed. The answer to the question is no, I don’t think there were any disadvantages.
DL: Are there specific advantages, or disadvantages, with your current motion?
JO: The biggest disadvantage is the added stress and wear and tear that is put on my pitching arm. The only real advantage at this point is that I am able to play baseball professionally using conventional mechanics.
and this
DL: Can you foresee a scenario in which Josh Outman stands on the mound in a professional game and delivers a pitch with his old motion?
JO: Yes, I can. It may not be in the near future, but at some point the time will be right.
I wonder if that time will be next year. If he undergoes surgery, he’ll be devoting a lot of time to getting his mechanics back anyway. What better time to switch back to the old approach?
The A’s were willing to give a try to an unorthodox delivery with Ziegler and it worked out pretty well. Maybe they can take a chance with Outman’s over-the-top approach as well.

I understand what you're saying
But to baseball minds, Ziegler’s motion isn’t nearly as unorthodox as the one in the picture there. I love Driveline Mechanics and the work that Kyle Boddy does. I would be absolutely giddy if I see somebody with some advance biomechanical motion like the one seen in this video. It’s a shame that the traditional thinking and stubbornness in advancing such things can lead to injuries like this.
Wow very interesting.
Josh sounds like a really smart guy. I have to questions though: 1) How does that work out of the stretch? Or is it out of the stretch already? Guys would run all over that if it is indeed the stretch. 2) Can the batter tell what pitch is coming, as it appears that the ball is being held in plain view of the batter at the beginning of the motion.

I'm pretty fascinated by this too...
I just have one question though. If he goes back to the older motion, isn’t he tipping pitches? I mean I could be way off here, but the really good teams I played in high school were pretty good at picking up on things like that, why wouldn’t pros? I’m not trying to be overly pessimistic, I’m literally just curious.
by MrMoneyBaller on Jun 29, 2009 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions
I'm curious about the tipping-pitches question, too.
If anyone ever interviews Outman, I hope they get a chance to ask about that.
Even if he doesn’t throw that way anymore, he must have had to face that issue some time in the past when he did.

Can it get any worse of a year for this team?
I mean, this is just terrible news. With Outman and Devine likely out until mid-season in 2010, all it would take is another injury to a young pitcher and then you could make the argument that this team’s vaunted pitching depth has all but evaporated in a matter of months.
Without any type of offensive depth, this organization is quickly passing into the realm of the “cursed and hopeless”. This is all making me sick.
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
Just for One Year
I would personally like to see the A’s play with no injuries.

Speaking of promising young pitchers who have undergone tommy john surgery…, Does anyone know what his return date is? mid-july?
I blame the A's for every injury to a pitcher
They keep sending them out there after they have problems and then they are done
Obligatory

I need someone...
to write an in depth post of things to be optimistic about at this point. I have maintained positivity to this point…longer than most but THIS did it for me.
You screw with our young pitching you screw with my happiness.

Hmm, I'll start
1) The Raiders haven’t begun tearing up the field yet.

The field looks bad enough
with all the wanna be’s in green hats standing out there.
Seriously how much worse could a lineup of our best AA and AAA players look out there?

2) early draft pick
CuttheMullet, from "The Thread":
"Whenever I’m about to do something, I think "would an idiot do that?" and if they would, I do not do that thing."
That would be interesting to look at.
Who is out there for the second or third choice next year. I hope Bryce Harper enters the draft. Then we will get the first rounder that would’ve gone number one overall to the Nats.
by throttle mathius on Jun 28, 2009 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Unless the Nats don't take him.
Hell, they DID just pick Strasburg as well as another Top 10 pick.

Just remember we're still in a rebuild
and have all those prospects. And Outman is gonna come back throwing 150 mph.

The more people we have go through TJ the greater chance we have of somebody successfully recovering from TJ!

either
if a warriors fan, just remember what that’s like.
or if not a warriors fan just imagine how bad things really could be

well, it isn't certain he needs tj yet, right?
if so, maybe this isn’t horrific. its bad news, no doubt, but if TJ is not required, then this shouldn’t be a gigantic setback for outman.
ya until you wait months then find out....not good..
aka Nady, but even worse because your a pitcher
Makes sense
Outman, fighter of the Hitman, champion of the K, he's a master of scoreless innings and friendship for everyone.
Just a reminder
Outman’s elbow has been feeling better and the original diagnosis was for a very mild sprain. He’s going to see Dr. Andrews tomorrow to get a 2nd opinion. In otherwords, unless his elbow has suddenly started barking (which could be) it doesn’t look like Outman needs TJ surgery.
So why did the A’s stick him on the 60 day DL? Cause even with a mild sprain, it was doubtful the A’s were going to let Outman pitch again until August. He was destined for a month long vacation anyhow… this move might just be extending his down time ’til September ’09.
The monster at the end of this blog.
You and your optimism.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
The Chron coverage mentions guys with elbows that don't feel too bad needing TJ surgery
the theory being that if your muscles are strong enough they can keep the joint structurally sound enough to feel okay most of the time — but not sound enough to pitch well in the majors.
But “Outman only needs to sit out the next 2 months” would count as good news at this point, so I’ll hope for it!

I rarely attack Slusser or even disagree with what she writes
But in this case, the last medical professional Outman saw said he had a very mild sprain. Two MRI’s did not show a tear. Now, maybe Dr. Andrews will read the scans differently and suggest surgery… I don’t know. All I know is what I’ve read, and from what I’ve read Outman hasn’t seen another doctor for a 2nd opinion. That happens on Monday. I don’t care who Slusser is listening to in the A’s FO or what other guys have experienced… I’m waiting on the Doc to make the call.
The monster at the end of this blog.
The fact that Monday's doctor happens to be named Kevorkian doesn't worry you?

I'd be more worried if it was the A's medical staff making the final call for or against surgery
The monster at the end of this blog.
Maybe she's seen enough medical situations with A's players end up a lot worse than they were thought to be
I dunno, I’d lean toward not suggesting it’s TJ unless there’s good evidence of it.

I...really don't think that's the mentality he has going into examining a ballplayer.

Dr. Andrews
Is a doctor, not a crack addict. He doesn’t consult athletes because he’s itching to cut people, he’s just really good at what he does. Plus, the guy has worked on hundreds and hundreds of athletes, and many more filter in each year. He’s set.

A's worst Medical staff in all of baseball
Kudo’s to Outman for blowing off the “A’s Medical staff” and wanting a second opinion. I can attest to the fact that there medical staff is bad.
Brad Halsey, is that you?
Octavio?

Except that Meyer brought his own problems on too.

if gio struggles again, he's gone and Eveland is coming up
my guess is Eveland could be packaged with Holliday/O Cab to the cards or another team….the spot will be Gio’s or Gallagher’s spot to win and keep – good luck with that….
SEASON is OVER Folks!
Gallagher out
Gallagher not due back anytime soon as just had procedure done last week. Out at least another 3/4 weeks for rehab and then will have to start throwing again. Seriously doubt he is back before seasons end.
So we're down to GIO and Eveland
God help us….
GIO….Its God – I got us this far, its time for you to do it or not. are your a AAAA or MLB player….its now or never pal
Guy has struggled to adjust at every level
give him a while before deciding whether he’s any good.

It hit Cabrera in the glove, dude. Let it go.
Regardless of the fact that it wasn’t a perfect throw, it hit Cabrera’s glove.

Its just seems like Billy Bob hate the guy…He could be throwing a no hitter into the 9th and he would give up a single and they would send the guy back down….I’m not shocked he’s starting Tuesday – just not for sac….
