Typical, the first day I could watch a 3am game in a week
and the A’s have an off day. I think somebody is trying to tell me something.

Carlos Gonzales makes me a sad panda
“I think we have more talented players and a better team here,” said Gonzalez, the top prospect in the trade that sent all-star outfielder Matt Holliday to the Athletics. “I know what it’s like to play over there. Here we expect to win every game. I think we are going to do fine against them.”
(of course his .226 obp makes me feel less sad)

Hopefully the A’s take it personally (even though it could be true) and bomb the Rox. Especially Friday when I’m at the game.

An accurate observation, to start with
Especially given the state of the team when Gonzalez was with the A’s.

Yeah but it is loaded
Considering he was pissed that he wasn’t made the man last year and has been called uncoachable.
A player shouldn’t say something like that about his former team and teammates. It is a shot and a low blow.

I kind of agree with him
Whatever the issue with him, I don’t think the A’s gave him much of a chance. He was unfamiliar with their offensive philosophy and if they expected him to change right away (or in the first year, I don’t know if they did or not) that’s not very realistic. Then they trade him in the Holliday deal when everyone knows Holliday’s not going to be here for the long term and it just seems like a waste unless they get something good for Holliday.

I don't disagree entirely
But I think if your choices are Buck, Holliday and Sweeney versus Buck, GOnxzales and Sweeney… you take the first one if you are in “go for it” mode, 8 days a week.

But then, O’Dowd would’ve been absolutely crucified for making a Holliday for Street/Smith/Swooney deal.
Gonzalez was the high upside guy in the bunch.

IDK. I would've given up Gonzalez over
any one of the young arms with similar value to CarGon (as in all except Eveland)
Gio might be the exception to that, but he really hasn’t had enough starts to make a call on that. This pitching market is shaping up to reeeally favor the 5-ish teams that have pitching or MLB-ready guys to trade (A’s, Braves, Padres, etc.)
(not like I really wanted a rent-a-player traded to begin with, but let’s leave the past in the past)

Gio?
I keep waiting for him to show something that justifies the hype. He doesn’t seem to be able to get major league hitters out on a consistent enough basis or throw enough innings to be a starter…
by jeffro on Jun 25, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's always needed a little bit of an adjustment period at every level to get settled in
and start being successful. I think once he gets a dozen starts consecutively under his belt, he’ll do just fine.

He's earned it?
At whose expense? Cahill, Anderson, Outman, Braden or Mazzaro? I’d say only Anderson is anyone and when Outman comes back unless Gio has thrown two games where he gets through 6 with no more than 2 runs scoring he has earned his way back to Sac.
The dude has 12 starts in triple a and averages 5 innings a start… That is pretty crappy. A 3.76 FIP versus a 2.51 ERA is also a sign that he isn’t pitching as well as traditional numbers suggest.
by jeffro on Jun 25, 2009 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A 3.76 FIP is pretty good period.
And the reason why he’s averaging 5 IP is mostly because he’s busy striking out a bunch of guys.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
by lenscrafters on Jun 25, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So what?
Two things:
That 3.76 FIP is in Triple A . I agree it would be good against big league hitters, but it isn’t.
Making it no more than 5 innings kills a bullpen over the course of a season, strike outs or no.
Considering he can’t pitch more than 5 innings in a Triple A game, how do you expect him to do it in the big leagues?
Gio is not one of the best five starters in the organization. And until he is he shouldn’t be pitching in the rotation above any of the others.
I’d agree it is possible that he will one day be better than Braden or Outman. But he has yet to make it happen.
by jeffro on Jun 25, 2009 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
So how exactly would you expect him to prove (or disprove):
Gio is not one of the best five starters in the organization.
and
I’d agree it is possible that he will one day be better than Braden or Outman. But he has yet to make it happen.
if you’re not willing to give him any consistent starts in the majors? I’m answering the question whether or not his minor league performance validates him getting an extended look. In which case, his FIP and other stellar recent minor league stats seem to indicate the answer is an emphatic “Yes, he deserves that chance.”
Also, perhaps unimportant due to SSS, 5 of his last 6 starts were over 5IP. Plus, like I said, it’s important to look at why he’s averaging 5IP per start: in this case, it’s mostly because of the Ks he’s been getting, which is good. That’s not to discount the fact that he has control issues and issues going deep into games. But I’m not trying to argue that he’s a perfect prospect or has everything figured out for immediate big league success. I’m arguing that recent, commendable factors of his minor league performance indicates, at least to me, that he deserves another shot.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
by lenscrafters on Jun 25, 2009 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why do you give him a shot?
Over the other young guys who are performing better? That’s the root of the question. Why? Considering the other guys in the rotation are younger or of similar age.
How does he prove it? By throwing 6 innings on a regular basis and not getting shelled in the process. He has two more starts to do this at least once… I am rooting for him.
by jeffro on Jun 26, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Some of the other guys aren't exactly setting the world on fire either.
Anderson is struggling, has injury issues, and has gotten pretty unlucky. There’s also a possibility that Braden, Outman (injured), Cahill, and Mazzaro are going to regress a little. Plus, eventually you’re going to have to limit the rookies’ innings anyways.
Also this is the way the argument’s going.
You: He doesn’t deserve another shot!
Me: Here are some reasons he deserves another shot.
You: He doesn’t deserve another shot!
Meh, I guess I’m done here.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
by lenscrafters on Jun 26, 2009 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whatever
You ignore the points for why he doesn’t deserve a shot right now. K’s are great, as long as getting them doesn’t require taxing the bullpen over the long term. Do you disagree with that?
The only reason he deserves a shot right now… Josh Outman is on the DL. Otherwise… who would you remove from the rotation to give him these consistent starts to prove he can do better?
He isn’t pitching better than any of the 5 current starters… he hasn’t shown that he can pitch as well as they have in a single start over the course of this season and last. So who do you replace in the rotation with Gio for the next 12 turns through the rotation?
I am not saying he will never deserve another shot, I am saying right now he doesn’t.
by jeffro on Jun 26, 2009 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's been averaging about 6 lately in Triple-A

Gio is nowhere near ready
for the ML’s
He has not improved one bit since his first ML start. He cannot handle pressure and goes into meltdown mode when he gives up a run.
His fastball says “Hit me” and he has very little control.
Robert Buan was even giving him a little ribbing about having those big innings. All he did was giggle and laugh like he was drunk.
Now do I hope he gets it together, YES, of course. We all want the best team possible for 2010.
I think the other rooks all have way more upside than Gio and I read somwhwere that many scouts think he maybe better suited to the bullpen.
I hope he improves out of sight in his next start because his last start was not very good IMO.

I only disagree a little :)
Gio has been really bad in the majors this season and last (albeit over 40 something innings).
I would argue (and have) he is close to ready, not actually ready. Let him stick in triple a until August and if he continues to develop on the pace he is now he should be dominating. Hopefully one of two things happens at that point, 1. He forces his way into the big league rotation, 2. someone else has fallen off considerably and he replaces them in the rotation.
He has completed what, a combined season at triple a over the past two seasons? Whats wrong with a little longer?
by jeffro on Jun 26, 2009 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's definitely an argument for Gio in AAA still,
and you’ve done a good job arguing it. But here’s what I think:
The A’s need to stop jerking players between levels. Gio should stay up as long as Outman is out, and potentially longer if Gio can prove that he can perform at a decent level and if Anderson continues to struggle or be inconsistent.
Gio has also taken time to get accustomed to new levels. Each level, he has struggled at first, then found his niche and started to succeed. The more the A’s jerk him around, the more time it will take for this transition period to pass. The A’s need to give him a shot to get through it.
Gio has proven that he has the stuff to dominate AAA hitters. However, he’s gotten away with walks/throwing balls through way of the strikeout. I might be the first person ever to argue this, but I think Gio would best be suited to solve his problems in the majors. In the majors, he won’t be able to get away with this, thus forcing him to throw more strikes. If his problem throwing strikes is mechanical, he’ll have access to better coacing IMO which will help him develop into a strike thrower. His growth at AAA has plataued (is that a word?), and I think a change of scenery would suit him well.
Now that I reread what I wrote, it doesn’t sound all that sensical (it’s 2 in the morning, my brain isn’t functioning perfectly), but if I’m wrong and he doesn’t improve at all over a decent number of starts, send him right back to AAA.

Yeah
But Buck hasn’t exactly been stellar… if I was running the joint… Cust would be splitting time with Giambi at DH and the outfield would be Holliday, Sweeney and Buck.
Scratch that… Right now I’d actually like to see Barton playing 1b everyday to prove that he either sucks or doesn’t, Cust DHing, Holliday traded so Cunningham/Buck/Sweeney and Davis could thumb wrestle for playing time.
Ugh. It is just dismal how this years plan has crumbled into broken shards of what once was mixed with smoldering embers of never will be.
I need a minute to compose myself.

this team:
getting Cust/Giambi out of the field is about a 20 run gain on defense from someone who is defensively neutral (0 runs defensively), and probably 30 from a Cunningham/Buck in the corners or Barton at 1B (if they’re good defenders, I’d peg them say…+5-10)
The Mariners replaced Raul Ibanez with Gutierrez and its paid dividends defensively (of course, I’m using the 2008 Lawn Dart Raul and not the 2009 Super-Raul)

Actually, a combination of three things:

(3) Happens to be having a better-than-usual season right now.

I was a kid then, so I wouldn’t have given much thought to the age of the swimsuit-clad grown-up on the poster, but in retrospect it’s an eye-opener. Nowadays it seems like the hot sex-symbol stars are barely into their 20s.

Right?
We grew up together, he and I. Well, not together per se, but during the same time period. The Jackson Five were probably my first record purchase as a kid. We used to put on their records and dance and sing. They had such an addictive, upbeat sound. I blame his dad for the freakish caricature of a human being he became later in his life. Sad and kind of scary. We’re the same age.

He broke the Ben's spine, but didn't actually kill him.
So the Ben proceeded to try to escape via his front legs. It was very macabre. Then John got the Ben and drowned him. Later we hauled him out, stuck him in a Zip-lock, and put him in the freezer. Its been a disturbing day in more ways than one.

While walking her daughter to school one day, my classmate saw a dead squirrel (not gory-dead, just dead) curled on its side in the gutter. So she dropped her daughter off, went home and got some sidewalk chalk, drew a chalk outline around the squirrel’s body, and photographed it like a crime scene. It was fantastic.

It’s not like they’re in a dead heat for the lead in the AL West anyway, and the cure for the yips may well be getting consistent starts rather than getting yanked around between the bigs and AAA. I don’t expect him to hold onto the spot after Outman and (dare I hope) Duke come back, but it might give us a better idea of how he could help us next year.

Oh god, I can’t wait! No more banking! Hannahan helps out a kid with cancer
I don’t usually care for these overly sentimental pieces, but I liked this one.
And as ugly as that 274 OBP is, I have a soft spot for Jack. It’s not his fault the A’s have nothing at third, he’s just really lucky to be the guy who gets to be in the majors, even if he is in way over his head.
I get the impression that he appreciates it and knows it might disappear at any moment. Quite possibly this coming Sunday.

Billy Beane's "sense of urgency"
He’s been quoted here as saying he feels no urgency to deal Holliday even if the A’s appear out of contention by July 31.
The last time I remember reading about Beane not feeling a “sense of urgency” was while he was energetically trying to trade Tim Hudson. That of course doesn’t prove anything, but….
