DLD- 6/23/2009: Man I am aggro today

In honor of taking the low road. Some mean spirited links to dump:

Seriously, only the San Francisco Chronicle could try and paint Sanchez in a good light after he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings to a team that sucks against lefties.

I am tired of the excuses from the A's... if you want to market your past glory it can't be for one weekend a year. Start using the past all the time... kind of like the team across the bay with an inferior past does, they even got a plaque for Kirt Manwaring and Johnny Lee LeMaster. Man alive, maybe some of the old dudes would come if it wasn't some token crap.

Star-divide

Is it too much to ask that MLB find three people from the Bay Area to represent the A's in their stupid contest?

Well, at least this looks like good news.

If I ahve to hear about this banality anymore, I am going to puke.

Dump with a  ferocity....

Rick Hurd, seems to believe Gio is pitching tonight.
Sure looks like Gio Gonzalez will be throwing (emphasis on "throw") tonight for the A’s. Whoop-de-du!!

Hey nothing against Gio. His numbers at Triple-A Sacramento have been decent, and he’s been on a nice run.

Hurd is confused

First of all, the source for that rumor, a CoCo Times story, says, “Should Outman be unavailable, speculation is that Gio Gonzalez would be brought up from Triple-A Sacramento to make Wednesday’s start.” So there’s speculation. No confirmation, no story. Just people speculating.

Furthermore, you cut off the Hurd assessment of Gio before this sentence:

But when the A’s acquired him, much of what was written about him ended in "might make a decent fifth starter."

Those quotes don’t actually represent a quotation. He just threw those in there as if he were quoting someone. And that might be because that’s not what the consensus was about Gio, who was the reigning minor league strikeout leader the previous year in Chicago’s system. He and FDLS were the White Sox top two prospects when Williams traded him to Oakland. To portray him as a throw-in with limited potential borders on dishonesty.

Yung Chi Chen?

Isn’t he still injured? Along with Doolittle? Nice work, Hurd. Personally, I can’t wait to see Aaron Rowand hit as an overpaid lead-off.

The only place he could justify that salary is back in Philly where he is a 30 HR guy

as apposed to a 12 HR guy in SF…

First of all, today is Tuesday, not Wednesday

so tonight is Mazarro vs. Lincecum.

Secondly, A’s now have Gio posted on their website:

Athletics: With Josh Outman not expected to make the start because of tightness in his left forearm, all signs point to the return of the left-handed Gonzalez, who is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 12 starts at Sacramento this season. Gio Gonzalez, whose 71 strikeouts in 61 innings rank second in the Pacific Coast League, has been recalled to Oakland twice this season, and twice he was sent down the day after pitching in long relief. In those two games, he gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks while striking out 11, but his command in Sacramento had been improving all year — his strikeouts-to-walks ratio is now better than 2-to-1.

There's no crying in baseball!

This A’s team does nothing really well.

Ever heard of developing young starting pitching?

You know what, I’m tired of seeing those guys in Oakland. Sick of the Daric Bartons and Dan Johnsons and Jack Hannahans (no offense, Jack) on the hitting side who always seem to side toward "bust." Tired of watching guys who might —- might —- be a fifth starter or decent setup guy at some point.

Dude, Daric Barton was a top prospect. And what about the (at least three) other guys who might — MIGHT — be number 1 or 2 starters one day, who are in Oakland NOW? Tired of watching them too? Or do you expect every single prospect in the system and every single guy on the major league team to be a superstar? What are you, a Yankees fan?

When’s the last time you even watched an A’s game?

by oblique on Jun 23, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And he does correctly point out

that Jack Hannahan has “no offense.”

Here, here

I can’t wait until Mark Ellis is a run sucking vacuum in the order instead of the super run sucking vacuum that Hannahan is and Adam Kennedy is playing subpar 3rd base.

Man alive, maybe some of the old dudes would come if it wasn’t some token crap.

I’ve been saying this for over 20 years. They really need to play up their history more. I’d even like to see a few Philadelphia-era retired numbers… at least Grove, Foxx, Simmons, and Cochrane. Do a couple plain jerseys on the wall for guys who played before they had assigned numbers. This franchise is #3 in WS titles… tell the world.

re: McGwire… I guess the steroid rumors are true, they do shrink your balls.

re: Steinbach… How’d that weekend picnic go?

re: Canseco… Ok, I can understand that one, he’s just a selfish boob. I also understand Lansford’s comments and sentiments.

Did Gallego go?

Grow up. we still love you here in Oakland….and you worked for the A’s this last season. How can you not show up? That’s just WRONG. This would be a perfect chance to start really participating in all that MLB still has to offer you. You are hurting your fans and letting the club down. Sahme on you…

by IM4Oakgal on Jun 23, 2009 2:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it's still to soon for the guy.

He was always the reluctant type. I imagine he may come around eventually, especially if the media will let the steroid issue die. As it stands now, he couldn’t show up at an A’s event without being pelted with question after question “about the past”. Those buffoons can’t believe that the guy simply has nothing to say, and what’s more, absolutely will not throw anyone else under the bus so that they can have sound bites for the next 24 hour “news” cycle. Quite frankly, Mark is the kind of guy I would want as a friend.

Why do you think it's solely the media's fault?

They’re not that out-of-touch. They’re not going to waste their time if nobody is interested. If fans would stop talking about it the media would be less likely to be interested also. The media is merely responding to what people want to hear. For right or for wrong, it’s still a hot-button issue that has people willing to listen and debate.

Really?

Because I’m grown weary of the whole mess. The testing is in place, for whatever value it has, so I’m done with it. What really irritates me is that the players union entered an agreement for anonymous testing in 03. Now suddenly the results of those tests are being splashed all over the news. I have a real problem with that. If the media truly wanted to do something useful, they would “investigate” who is leaking confidential information from active investigations. But they will never do that.

PS

No matter what Canseco did ….he was such an important part of the team . I wish he was going to be there…the other players have a right to hate him but that shouldn’t keep them from showing their appreciation to the fans that loved them and the team that employed them .

radio talk all says

Canseco would want to be paid to show up. Then again, other sources say he was invited but didn’t RSVP.

I like to think that there is still a chance that he might show up.

Bleacher Report reports what I'm thinking

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/205050-as-haunted-by-ghosts-of-oakland-past/show_full

Last night on NBC broadcast (featuring Jon Miller, Krukow, and Ray Fosse – VERY entertaining between Miller and Fosse), they even did a freakin’ Eric Byrnes crashing-into-Coliseum-walls highlight reel. I thought it a bit odd that they would show highlights of such a fan favorite who wasn’t retired, honored with some award, or part of the ’89 team.

So that article gets me more Aggro

Marco Scutaro, Nick Swisher and Matt Stairs didn’t make their names in non playoff seasons.
The A’s have plenty of young guys on the team… the entire rotation is basically first year players, the “closer” is a first year player, the catcher is a second year player, the center fielder is a second year player. The Giants have Ishikawa and Sandoval and Shcierholtz (or however you spell it)
The A’s don’t market their past ENOUGH. Ugh.

Hopefully he's not the CFer for long. I've soured on Sweeney - he's simply

not developing as a hitter.

Scarily I’d give Davis the everyday job in CF and see where he goes with it. Buck would start in RF, Holliday in LF (till traded) and Sweeney as the 4th OFer. Granted in my world Giambi is cut and Barton starts at 1B, but there you go.

I agree with you on Barton

Why are Buck and Cunningham not playing in the majors every day? This team ain’t winning squat, get rid of Holliday and Giambi, who have no future on this team and are blocking players who do. That’s how you rebuild a team for contention.

and we shouldn’t be in any rush to move Holliday – we really need a to get a good package for him considering what we gave up.

That's true

Frustrating though. True they can’t play center, but they CAN play the corners, where they should be playing so we can see if they are to be a part of our future. They have more upside than Sweeney unless he starts hitting homers.
