GOG 2009 #24
The A's meet their crosstown rivals for a second interleague series starting today. I don't really want to think about what happened in the three game set that took place earlier this month, so let's think about a more exciting series.
That happy moment will be the focus of all sorts of pre-game festivities tomorrow, so it's the least I can do to include some 1989 tribute questions in the GOG. Happy thoughts!!
Links
- Probable pitchers
- Giants stats
- Surprise! I actually graded a whole bunch of GOGs. Well, only four of them, which means I still have a bit of a back log. But go and check out how you fared for GOGs #17, #18, #19, and #20
GOG #24 :: Living In The Past (34 points possible)
Three game series vs San Francisco Giants -- June 22-24
UPDATE -- answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 Giants
- Dave Stewart was named MVP of the 1989 World Series, thanks to the complete game 5-hit shutout that he threw in game one (and he also had a 7 inning, 3 run effort in game three). Do any of the Oakland pitchers manage a complete game in this Battle of the Bay? (note: it would be the first complete game of 2009 for Oakland) [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
- The A's OPS leader for the 1989 World Series was Hendu, who went 4-for-13 with 4 walks, 2 doubles, and 2 home runs (both of which came in high-scoring game 3). Predict which Oakland player has the best OPS for this series [3 points] Best OPS was Nomar, who went 1 for 2 with a double (1.500 OPS). Runners up were Rajai (1.214 OPS) and Cabrera (1.000 OPS). Needless to say, no one got this right.
- On account of the 10 day break due to the earthquake, the A's used only two starters (Stewart and Mike Moore) and four relievers (Todd Burns, Rick Honeycutt, Gene Nelson, and Eck). How many relief pitchers does Oakland use in this series? How many innings do they throw? [3 points each] A's used 5 relief pitchers, for a total of 10.1 innings
- Of all A's hitters who had 9 or more at-bats in the 1989 series, McGwire was the only one without a home run. Do the A's get any home runs from the 1st base position in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no, Giambi hit a HR but he was DHing
- So far this season, Jack Cust is seeing only 3.99 pitches per plate appearance, considerably down from his averages over the past two seasons (4.40 and 4.38 pitches per plate appearance, for 2007 and 2008 respectively). Will Cust average more than 4 pitches for each of his plate appearances in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Cust saw only 3.75 pitches per plate appearance in the series
- Will Outman be ready for his start in game three? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] nope, Gio took his start and Outman had Tommy John surgery
- Not him again! Predict Lincecum's IP/ER/K [2 points each] 9 IP, 1 ER, 12 K... yawn...
- In the last series against the Giants, Pablo Sandoval got four hits, score three times, and picked up a pair of RBIs. Describe his damage to the Athletics this time around, specifically his AB/H/RBI [2 points each] 11 AB, 3 H, 2 RBI
- The Mendoza Line :: Giambi, Hannahan, and Crosby are currently straddling that mark of futility, with batting averages of .207, .200, and .194 respectively. For each of those three players, guess whether their batting average will be above or below .200 at the end of the series [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Giambi finished the series at .205, Hannahan at .191, Crosby at .190
- How many run-scoring outs are made in the series (by the A's and Giants combined)? [3 points] six
First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 pm. Post your guesses, and then sit back and watch as the A's exact their revenge!
Results
I was worried about how the scores would turn out this round, given the large potential for negative points, but people did really well. Sure, there were some gimmes, like whether an A's pitcher would throw a complete game or Crosby finishing above the Mendoza line. But nice job anyway!
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 7.63636 points
- standard deviation = 3.57964 points
- mode = 9 points
Your Scores
Congratulations to our winner, train80. Just as a note, I've settled into the pattern of setting the cutoff for the ranking by AVG to be 1/3 of the total number of GOGs. That means that you now need to have played at least 8 times to be eligible, and pam5981 just lost her place at the top.
