6/20 Minor Athletics
Two in a row. Let's remember we're only in June. I was at the Angels/SF game on Wednesday and I was thinking about the AL West. Other than the Rangers, who could fall off because of that Achilles' heal --starting pitching, the AL West could be wide open. It remains to be seen whether our starting pitching can be consistent enough to keep us in games and our hitting can be lucky enough to get 4 runs across. Anyway, just a glimmer of hope. Here are the results from yesterday.

considering the MWL is tough on hitters overall, he’s been pretty solid. if not for a horrible month of may, he’s hit around .290/.800+ OPS the other 2 months
also capra tough May, dominant june and has lowered the era

Dixon
Might be my new Fav prospect.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

I worry a lot about his K rate
He did hit a homer last night but he also Ked in 50% of his abs. I mean he almost Ked in 4 out of every 10 AB in rookie ball last year. Oodles of potential, but he must cut the K rate to succeed.

Hes like 18...
hes got plenty of time to improve on that. Right now i want him learning to drive the ball when he hits it.

I agree
But lack of contact ability in the low minors is one of the most frequent signs of prospects that bust.

He's settling right into the Brown/Coleman/Desme MO
If he didn’t get a hit, it’s probably because he struck out.

He was in extended spring training
most of this season working on making his swing more consistent. I figure, he’s 18 and he’d probably be mashing in college if he didnt get signed by the A’s, so lets wait to see if the patients develops because this kid has awesome power.

Well, he IS hurt
I just really hope it’s not serious… and not anything to do with the hip flexor injury that cost him such a lot of development time.

14 errors in one day by our minor league teams
That is not a good sign for a sub par defensive major league team like the A’s. The biggest thing I took away from both the Gients & Dodgers series were how much better there team, (out field in particular) defense was. Both teams have CF’s at all out field positions, (even Ethier although he has not played CF) and they ran down so many fly balls that are hits when they are hit against the A’s. I like Holliday in LF but our CF & RF positions with Cust out there are a joke. I am so happy this is the last game in a NL park because we need to get some speed in the RF spot.

I dislike Holliday in LF but I'm willing to accept it cos he's such a good hitter.
Defensively he’s mediocre.

He really hasn't hit that well, winchester5
He’s getting his stats into “ok” territory, particularly the solid OBP, but he’s also on pace for less than 20 HRs. More puzzling to me is just the frequency with which he swings through, or fouls back, a belt high fastball. I think it was reasonable to hope and expect Holliday to slug more than .422 and that’s what he’s slugging.

Maybe he hasn't been the All star that he was with the Rockies, but switching leagues is a hard thing for hitters to do
on top of going from Colorado to Oakland, he has to deal with switching leagues and minimal protection in the lineup. Considering, I think he has been pretty solid, especially if you ignore the horrible start.
Yes, hes been a little disappointing, but hes been a good player.

I dont think most fans care about what adjustments he has to make.
All they care about is results. So far hes been very disappointing.

Throughout his career, Holliday has amassed 31.4 RAR on defense
over six years. He’s very good defensively. Actually, so far this year he’s 4th best among LF for defensive RAR. He’s even been better than speedsters like Span and Crawford.

I think we all know defensive stats are iffy at best.
If you watch the guy play every day he’s very mediocre in LF.

He's played pretty well of late
He was surprisingly awful in April, ok in May, pretty good in June. GG in September!!!!

and ok May.
by OldhamA on Jun 22, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ah - he has gotten a lot better
What was odd about March/April was that he was looking terrible even in familiar parks – such as in the Bay Bridge Series, and later some series in Oakland when he had just played there a fair amount.

Leyja's position
He’s listed on the roster as a second basemen which is where he played last night. Oh, and he made 2 errors in his first game, yikes.

Report from Midland
Saw the Friday and Sat games against San Antonio Missions, who are loaded with top Padres prospects. But the best part first. Friday night after the game, we went to Chili’s for a late meal. As we left, my wife asked some familiar-looking guys if they played for the Rockhounds. Yep.
So we met Jared Lansford, Carlos Hernandez, Bobby Cramer, and some tall skinny kid who just said, “I’m Ben.” I answered, “Oh, the new guy,” and he grinned. Ben Hornbeck is one lanky pitcher.
Saturday night, Hornbeck was sweating from nervous energy during early warmups. He looked nervous in the game, but maybe adrenaline got him through the first 3 innings. After that, he looked nervous, exhausted, was pressing too hard, and generally fell apart. He was throwing way too hard and into the dirt. Tough AA start. Just looking at him and his good pitches, he’ll get better. And he was promoted because Cramer is hurt and Midland needed a starter.
Hornbeck left with the bases loaded, and Lansford immediatedly allowed 2 straight hits to empty the bases. Lansford throws the ball from just behind his right ear, like a catcher. Was his delivery like that last year?
Arnold Leon came in. Leon has a fast breaking slider, but could not control it. His 90 mph fastball was dead straight, no action at all and very hitable. Leon must get better. By the end, he was pretty down. It was a tough night.
Josh Horton: I said a few days ago that I would pay close attention and report. I was wrong about Horton’s size. He is as advertised, about same as Cardenas, but not as strong. However, I was right about his defense. Only charged with 1 error, I counted 5 plays that Horton misplayed. All should have been made. Horton is slow to react to the batted ball, so the range is below average.
Chris Carter is making a very good 1B. With his long wingspan, he gathered in several errant throws. On one terrible throw from Alex Valdez at 2B, Carter flew through the air like Michael Jordon, pulled the throw down, spun and made the tag. Quite acrobatic.
Adrian Cardenas made more good plays at 3B than misses. Getting better, but needs time, probably the rest of this season at Midland at 3B.
Before the game, Cardenas, Horton, and Matt Spencer were doing their Harlem Globetrotter imitation, passing baseballs around in a circle. Sweet Georgia Brown. Mike Affronti joined them and they had 6 balls going at once. Incredible. Who had the fastest hands? Cardenas.
The Rockhounds really miss Corey Brown. Archie Gilbert does not have the range in CF that Corey Brown has. Archie’s path to fly balls is sometimes slow to develop.
We won’t be back to Midland for a few weeks, so good luck Rockhounds.

Dixon went 2-4 again today.
Everyone’s already done today, couple other notable lines for shits and giggles:
-Sacramento 5-4 W:
Eric Patterson 0-4
Tommy Everedige 2-4 HR (26 years old already, but he (I guess?) plays 3B, or at least winds up there in the box score pretty often, .306/.380/.489/8 HR at Midland, .333/.423/.533 BEFORE today in Sac in 45 AB)
Simmons 6 IP, 3 K, 0 BB, 6 H, 2 ER
-Midland 8-5 L:
Horton 2-4, 2B
Spencer 2-4
Donaldson 1-4, 2B
Carter/Cardenas combined 0-7, BB
Demel 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 0 ER
Outman, fighter of the Hitman, champion of the K, he's a master of scoreless innings and friendship for everyone.

I dunno what happened
But it posted before I was finished.
Anyway, Daniel Haigwood, a once decently regarded White Sox prospect, is on Midland now. Not sure when that happened. He pitched a 2/3 of a scoreless inning.
-Stockton 8-2 L:
Keough 4-4
Weeks not in lineup
Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (one of my favorite prospects, but only for that name) 4 1/3 IP, 5 K, 4 BB, 3 H, 1 ER. Dude kinda sucks on the whole (5.44 ERA, 28/24 K/BB in 46.1 IP), which is a shame for all of us of French-Canadian heritage out there…vive les Expos)
-Kane County 6-0 W:
Christian 2-3, HR, BB
Coleman 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Desme 0-3, BB, 3 K
Barfield 1-4 (haven’t seen him get a lot of hype yet, maybe I’m just missing it, but he’s quietly had kind of a kickass year so far. Will be only 21 in a couple weeks, .302/.380/.467/6 HR line, son of Jessie)
-Vancouver 3-1 W:
House 1-3, BB
Dixon 2-4, K
Leya 0-2, BB
Penalba 5 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 7 K (20-year old Panamanian in the system, struck out 12 in 9 1/3 innings in the AZL last year. Not sure where he came from, or what his scouting report is like, but he seems kinda interesting.)
Outman, fighter of the Hitman, champion of the K, he's a master of scoreless innings and friendship for everyone.

"walk off bunt" doesn't sound very French
Is there even a French word for bunt? I’m guessing it must be borrowed from English:
Je bunte
Tu buntes
Il bunte
Nous buntons
Vouz buntez
Ils buntent
by Faust on Jun 21, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vouz Buntez actually led the Mexican League in batting last Winter.

Maybe if you conjugated "to sacrifice?"
that’s the closest thing to bunt that already exists in the French language. partir le sacrifice? (I took a couple years of French, but, I mean, I retained like none of it)

any observation as to Ellis' defense?
Is Ellis able to make the same range now that he’s healed up now? he’s going to have to return to his defensive wizardry if he’s going to supplant Kennedy at 2B.
