Rotation coming together

On the heels of Vin Mazzaro's strong ml debut, I feel a lot of excitement when I look at this team. This rotation is as young as it gets but there is a lot of talent and ability there. And through the first two months of the season several of the young starters have shown this talent, emphasis on Cahill and Outman. Braden is the lone "veteran" who has done a great job of bringing stability to a rocky season thus far and I even feel that Anderson will be pretty good, even though he's been the shakiest of the starters. I say give this season one more month and if the offense continues to struggle and the team can't get back in it, set your sights on the progress of the rotation because I think the future is pretty bright with these kids.

I am also excited about this rotation,

though I wouldn’t cite Cahill as our top performer, and I’d say that Anderson has actually been one of our stronger starters, although he has gotten pretty unlucky.

I think with Braden, Outman, Anderson, Mazzaro, and Cahill we have the makings of a very very strong second half rotation, and I think that all it’s going to take is a few good starts in a row before these guys all get the confidence to throw strikes, and then they’re going to take off.

We’re only 9.5 games out in the division, and if we have a good month, we could finish the month within 5 games and a team which will be steadily getting better.

I see, perhaps, the light, and I for one am looking forward to the rest of this season.

I admit... I appear to have been wrong about Outman...

and, a little too enthusiastic about Anderson. I’ve always been a Dallas supporter, but his performance has surprised even me. I didn’t think he’d be this good, this soon (without the scrooge).

Mazzaro… if first impressions are any indication, I may have underestimated him, as well.

Billy may have built the best ever, youngest 5-man rotation in the history of baseball. Hyperbole… perhaps… but, what if it’s true? Weather warms up… A’s start to hit… 9 games back at this early stage is nothing! Nothing, I say!

CHANGE

the order of the rotation and you have:
__O_utman
__B_raden
__A_nderson
__M_azzaro
c_A_hill

Now that’s a rotation I can believe in.

Wait... let's work on this a minute.

If we can safely say that CAMBO works… we can say that the starting rotation is CAMBOdia.

Now we HAVE to extend Holliday, so we can have Holliday-n-CAMBOdia.

Clever anagram

Perhaps if the team strecthed out Breslow the rotation could include:

__C_raig Breslow

__G_io Gonzalez

at some point. Thoughts?

Totally agree.

I really think the GM should hold off on trading away guys like Holliday until after the All-Star game.

It would be bad for the pitchers to feel like they need to pitch flawlessly because there is no offense at all.

I also agree with King Richard- give the A’s another month or so to see if they can get back in the race. It will be interesting to see if the starters can improve.

I do think the bull-pen and awful manager will keep costing the team but one can always hope for improvement

This rotation still has a long way to go to become good.

We have to realize that it takes time to develop young pitchers at the ML level. Mazzaro looked o.k. but still has to get better. Mazzaro had an ok debut but needs to improve. He has a good arm. He needs to change speeds better.

by Tbone 1 on Jun 3, 2009 5:55 AM PDT reply actions

Cahill has greatly improved as the season went on.

First 5 starts: 26 IP (avg ~5 IP/start) , 27 H, 13 ER, 8 K, 18 BB

Last 6 starts: 34.1 IP (avg 5.2 IP/start – avg would be 6 if not for that one horrid start against Detroit) , 34 H, 16 ER (7 of them came in that 1 bad start), 18 K, 8 BB

Reason for optimism.

"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."

by Blicks on Jun 3, 2009 8:43 AM PDT reply actions

Cahill can still be a top of the rotation guy.

More importantly for Cahill is that he is starting to get more swing and misses. He just needs to be more consistent keeping his sinker down in the zone. He has just incredible movement.

First 5 starts: 26 IP, 8 K (2.76 K/9 IP)
Last 6 starts: 34.1 IP, 18 K (4.75 K/9 IP)
He has also had 13 K over his last 19 IP.
Lets also not give up on Anderson yet. Lets not forget that Mulder struggled just as much as a 22 year old rookie in 2000.

And Braden is making me believe he can be a good 4-5 guy. I still expect good things from Gallagher/Gio.

Interesting stat on Cahill.

Hes had 11 starts. 9 of them hes allowed 2 ERs and under, other 2 were 7 ERs in less than 3 innings each. Throw them two out and hes been fantastic with a 3.58ERA for the year.

The rotation as it is

IMO, does give us something to really look forward to now that the garbage has been weeded out.

I know Mazzaro has only pitched one game but going back to ST I always thought he was more developed that Cahill myself.

If we could only score some runs, we might get back to .500 by end of July as long as we have a 3rd baseman that can hit over .2 fucking hundred.

by Trainman on Jun 3, 2009 12:02 PM PDT reply actions

Since you asked

If we had no Eveland, Springer, Casilla, Hannahan, Davis and no Bob Geren, I imgagine we would already be over .500. I am sure there is someone I am missing out. LOL

To the bullpen, I hope.

But that maybe dependent on the standing of the team when/if Duke comes back. If the A’s are still in it, I could imagine him being fast-tracked back to majors (minimal rehab) to be inserted into the bullpen. But if the team has no chance at contention, maybe its more prudent to have him start.

In the end, I doubt Duke will make it back in time to garner any trade value. He’s a free agent after the season. He may be a type B free agent, I’m not sure though due to his injuries over the past two seasons. Maybe the A’s offer him a cheap one-year contract ,allowing him to show the rest of the league that he can play a full healthy season as a starter. With the starting pitching depth, losing Duke to injury in 2010 will hurt less and may also provide the A’s with the opportunity of putting him back in the bullpen.

I am Ray Fosse's infatuations with Clay Wood and high-definition television.

I have no problem with Duke back in the pen.

He was an allstar in both spots, but I think Duke would have a problem with the pen for the rest of the season (again if/when he returns)…

But then again, we’ve already had 8 different starters (I think) this season and I really doubt we will use only these 5 the rest of the way. It would be nice if they all stay healthy and effective enough for that to happen, but we’ll see.

But, Gio did not get any starts in his 2 trips up. Gallagher did though. Giese and his spot start was the one I missed.

watch out for outman tonight

a lefty with a mid-nineties fastball is nothing to gloss over. he still needs to show some consistency from a start to start basis but if he can develop a change-up with the same arm slot as he shows with his fastball, he could be scary good.

What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?

This rotation reminds me of the Rays' 2008 rotation -

Didn’t they also have no one over 26, with Shields, Kazmir, Garza, Sonnanstine, E. Jackson? Shields has a great changeup and is the elder statesman (Braden), Kazmir throws hard with control issues (Outman), Garza is a young power pitcher (Mazzaro), Jackson was a young, raw righty with good stuff (Cahill), and Sonnantine is a poised 21-year old lefty…Well, I tried.

After 4 good starts in a row...

It’s definitely evident that the young rotation’s success is the key to the A’s locking into a winning mode. I’m very excited about the low walk totals in the last two starts, that to me says a lot about comfort level on the mound and I think the victories will keep coming for these young 5!
