Fan Un-Favorites

I was thinking the other day.  Who are my least favorite A's of the last 10 years?  I'd thought I'd put this up for discussion.

These range from utterly terrible players to players who may have been good and were still disliked to guys its almost unfair to put on the list they were so bad to a special category of players that went from fan favorite to un-favorite in the blink of an eye.  Any thoughts?

We just disagree — it’s no big deal.

I'm not sure about others

Harden

Come on now. What did they do to deserve the hate or “un-favortism” ?

Jim Mecir

I did very much fear Mecir, as the sign said.

I don’t know, I loved that screwball!

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes on Mecir

I second Jim Mecir for this list, he often found a way to screw things up out there on the mound. Of the top of my head I can remember three games he blew that I saw in person.

Of the current group of players I think Crosby is the obvious choice. He’s one of those cursed guys who has some talent but can’t get in done on the Major League level and I think most A’s fans can’t wait to see him go.

Even though he’s become a good pitching coach I wasn’t a fan of Curt Young when he was a player. He was always kind of a weak link in the rotation back on the championship teams of the late 80’s and he was a soft tossing lefty who wasn’t much fun to watch compared to Stew and Welch.

by sirbed on Jun 19, 2009 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I personally didn’t really hate any of them, but they all had reasons for fans to dislike them.

Harden was beyond infuriating with the injuries.

Melhuse sticks in my mind for having been at bat for the final out (as a pinch hitter!) of one of our many playoff losses even though he was hitting .200 though I could be wrong about that.

Hatteberg was on the bubble, he got some flack for just being so boring…

Country Joe I could never decide whether I liked or not, should have been “on the bubble” but I know a lot of fans disliked him.

I actually didn’t put all of these guys on here b/c I am positive I disliked them but because a large contingent of fans dislike them at least, and others are on there just for interesting debate :)

How about Todd Van Poppel?

Mecir also immediately popped to mind

by Lafayette Scotsman on Jun 19, 2009 11:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I always liked Mecir

Who was perhaps the first active major leaguer to qualify for a handicapped parking sticker.

And you can blame Ken Macha for Melhuse’s failure. Pinch hitting Melhuse for Dye (our highest paid, most veteran hitter) was the single worst managerial move in the last ten years of Oakland A’s history.

How about Arthur Rhodes?

by Brian in 317 on Jun 19, 2009 11:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

good then I wasn’t tripping when the burnt into my cerebellum image of Melhuse pinch hitting came to mind… But good point that was on the manager not on Melhuse

I don't know

Mecir was 13-21 with a era near 4 in his time with the A’s

by sirbed on Jun 19, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mecir, and even Rincon, had their good moments

Mecir, for example, was excellent after we picked him up from Tampa Bay in 2000, and still good in 2001, before losing his touch the next couple years.

Rhodes, on the other hand, was a total wipeout from the word go. Horrible performance, rotten attitude, nothing to like there whatsoever. I’m sure the man has some redeeming attributes, but he chose not to display any of them in Oaktown.

Redman, same story. Hated his contract from the get-go, hated his performance, hated his attitude, and couldn’t wait to see him off the roster. Unfortunately, when he and Rhodes blessedly left, they brought in…

Jason Kendall. He’s not reallly like the others, in that he had some special moments, and in fact the second of his three years in Oakland was actually pretty good. But I can’t help it, I just so utterly hated watching him “hit” – or “throw” – that I can’t keep him off my list.

Finally, T-Long. Seemed like a nice enough guy in isolation, but couldn’t hit, never showed an iota of development, and started enough games in the outfield that he wound up feeling it was an entitlement of his no matter how badly he performed. It must have come as a complete shock to him how fast his career ended once that lousy contract of his ran out.

So that’s my personal list: Rhodes, Redman, Kendall, Long. My fingers shudder in revulsion just typing out the names.

I do dissent from your idea about Macha/Dye/Melhuse, though I know yours is the more commonly held opinion. Dye wasn’t himself that year; in fact, he was the worst player in the entire league that year. I mean, .172/.261/.253(!!!)/.514(!!!!!). Yes, he’d hit a home run in the series, but he was just 3 for 13, his performance all season just screamed “This is not my year!” – and, oh yeah, he had loafed his way into an out at second base on that Johnny Damon-Damian Jackson collision play. The same pitches that got Melhuse out would have gotten Dye out as well… That damn series should have ended in game 3.

by Faust on Jun 19, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mecir saved our asses in 2000. I personally wouldn’t have him on my list but I could definitely see the argument.

But Rincon stays on my list because no matter how well he pitched I hated him. He had t-rex arms!

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. Rhodes, hands down.
Rhodes, on the other hand, was a total wipeout from the word go. Horrible performance, rotten attitude, nothing to like there whatsoever. I’m sure the man has some redeeming attributes, but he chose not to display any of them in Oaktown.

Back then, my idol was Bugs Bunny, because I saw a cartoon of him playing ball - you know, the one where he plays every position himself with nobody else on the field but him? Now that I think of it, Bugs is still my idol. You have to love a ballplayer like that.

I don't disagree with Geren, but I'd add Tony LaRussa. When he was winning with the A's, I liked him.

In his time in St. Louis, I’ve soured on him. I don’t like his blind eye to the steroid issues and his lame defense since then. I do like that he saves animals, though.

He sucked for us but was good for the Red Sux and Yanks.

Easily worse than anyone else on the list.

Damon had a off year in Oakland but he stole 27 bases and he played well against the Yankees in the ALDS.

But he still played MUCH better for the Suxxxx and the Yanks

I couldn’t include him cuz I loved that canon arm but in light of his steroid abuse and the fact that Aaron Harang has become a productive player maybe he deserves to be on the list

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

Steroids – Had nothing to do with his time in Oakland … if you’re gonna hate him cuz of steroids, then add Canseco, McGwire, probably Rickey, and a ton of other A’s onto the list.

Harang – so he got good once he left … you have to trade good players to get good players.

Fights with Macha – when? Please link one example of this. (Crickets chirping.)

Signing with the Angels – Ok then add Reggie Jackson and Joe Rudi.

Generally being a terrible person – except for the occasional locker-room tiff, I hardly think he deserves the “terrible person” title.

I swear, I’ve never understood the Guillen hate on this board. Guy came here, busted his ass, and practically carried us to the playoffs against Boston. Far as I remember, he was one of the few people who produced in that series, as well. Guillen was solid for us, end of story.

It’s one of those things that people assume because he had some trouble elsewhere. But there wasn’t one reported “incident” while he was here. Not one.

"From fan favorite to un-favorite"

Sorry, but you have to include Eric Chavez on that list. Those of us who don’t drink the Chavez Kool-Aid will at least give him an honorable mention.

I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

by Vacafan on Jun 19, 2009 2:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't.

In the “From Fan Favorite to Un-Favorite” category, my nominees would be:

Bobby Crosby (hard to remember now, but he was loved here in the early days)

Houston Street (ditto, and with good reason, but he was just brutalized here towards the end)

Not that these guys would make my personal list. Whatever the reasons for Crosby’s failure to develop as we all hoped, a lack of effort and desire certainly doesn’t appear to have been among them, so I won’t kick him when he’s down (although I certainly don’t relish watching him play). Street is a good, smart, hard-working guy who couldn’t sustain the extraordinary level of success he started out with in a job (closer) that is judged more ruthlessly than any other on the diamond; I won’t pile on.

Similarly with Chavez. I know you’ve hated him since forever (Chavez-hating is the one thing that I instantly think of whenever I see the name “Vacafan”), but I’ll be rooting for a Chavez comeback until the day he hangs them up. I won’t expect it, and I most certainly wouldn’t advise Billy Beane to plan on it, but I’ll root for it.

by Faust on Jun 19, 2009 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huston street is a good call for that category.

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL - I have "hated" on him a bit too much ..

Seriously, as far as I can tell, he’s probably one of the classiest, nicest guys to ever wear the uniform. I’d probably like him a lot in person.
And, believe it or not, from about 1998-2002, if you asked me who my favorite Athletic was, I’d of answered Chavez in a heartbeat.
But I placed waaaaaayyyy to much hope in him when he signed the big deal, and it seemed as if I was always disappointed. Please understand that my “hatred” is for fun, only — again, he seems like a great guy. (Now, if you’d only bother to earn about $10 of your contract, I’d be happy, you bum!)

Good answer

And I’d seriously have never suspected he was once one of your favorites.

My problem is always when frustration with someone’s performance boils over into harsh judgments about his character. (This has happened a lot with Harden and his injuries as well.) By all accounts, Eric is a relentless hard worker when it comes to his rehab, and I can only imagine the kind of perseverance it must take to put in countless boring, tedious, dull, painful hours of rehab work only to have life whop you over the head every time you begin to get your hopes up that things might actually work out. Honestly, Chavez must be about 47,000 times as frustrated as any of us, but he keeps on trying. I have to respect that.

Understand that this does not mean that I don’t call him all sorts of names when I watch him chase yet another high fastball when he should know by now that that’s a sucker pitch for him. But that’s between me, myself, and my TV set, and the three of us understand that it doesn’t go beyond the room. No one’s feelings are unfairly hurt, no one’s character is besmirched.

I admit to a soft spot for Chavez. I still wish that that MVP year could belatedly kick in – say, next year. I understand that’s like a 1% chance – if by 1% you understand 1% to the third or fourth power. But it would be sweet.

This list, like any "best of/worst of" list is pretty lame

Despite his flaws, Byrnes was more exciting to watch than anyone on this team (except some of the young pitchers, maybe). The guy had more heart than most of the current team put together.

Where’s O-Cab?? Kendall?? Holliday?

by joshers on Jun 19, 2009 2:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This list was made in about 5 minutes. It is not supposed to be perfect or comprehensive. It is merely supposed to be a starting point for fun discussion and nostalgia about our least favorite a’s and worst a’s memories. Part of being a fan is not just winning, not just loving your star players, but being disappointed, angr, and frustrated, especailly seeing your least favorite player trot out day after day (whywhywhywhy Jack hannahan!!!) etc. So have fun with it.

And really Matt Holliday goes on that list already??
O-cab can’t go on there for me solely because he IS NOT Bobby Crosby.

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The reason I'd vote for Byrnes

is because, despite all the adoration for his “hustle”, he wasn’t a very good baseball player. He “hustled” because he badly misjudged just about every flyball that came his way. And I’m still mad he couldn’t touch home plate in Boston. What a spaz.

I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

by Vacafan on Jun 19, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now THERE, I agree with you.

I liked Byrnes better than you apparently did, but for all his hustle (which I think comes from a very genuine and admirable enthusiasm for the game), the defining moment of his career is one where he quit on a play in the biggest moment he’ll ever have on a baseball field. Pouting, shoving Varitek out of the way, failing to notice a dugout full of teammates pointing out the fact that HE WASN’T OUT YET.

Reading your list makes me realize

that for me, “un-favorite” has little to do with how bad the player plays. A lot of the guys you list were pretty bad for us, but it didn’t make me dislike them. Of everyone you list there are only two I would count as un-favorites (Jason Kendall and Jeremy Giambi), but neither are because they were bad. I just didn’t like those guys. Sure, you still root for them if they’re on the team, but some guys I just don’t like very much.

Come to think of it, I have a more favorable opinion of Jason Giambi now than I did in his last few years here the first time, and he was a hell of a lot better player then.

I agree an “un-favorite” is not just about production. I mean ricardo rincon probably wasn’t that bad for us.

But sometimes the two go hand in hand. Jimmy Haynes/ Grieve/ Hannahan to me are all prototypical un-favorites.

P.s. did anyone see Rajai’s ‘throw’ to home plate last night??! Wow, that was the worst throw I have ever seen by anyone this side of Grieve/ Damon!

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 3:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

But it wound up as a positive!

Roberto Clemente wouldn’t have got the out at home, but the feeble throw enticed the batter to try for second and enabled Suzuki to make a FANTASTIC play. I mean, when have you ever seen a catcher sprint out past the pitcher’s mound to cut off a throw and nail a baserunner? Vin Scully was gushing about it. (Yes, I chose to watch Scully rather than Fosse & Kuip, and I’m not embarrassed about it.)

Santiago Casilla, by far

He’s just good enough to be kept around for decently high leverage situations, but just bad enough to scare me when he’s on the mound.

And where is Koch at? I know he was good for us and all, but the guy really did suck, and was just plain lucky.

As far as my namesake, no way can Terrence Long be on this list. Not with ‘that catch’ at least.

That catch was terrific

And what a fine moment, with Dye hoisting him off the ground in celebration, and Manny heading back to the dugout robbed of his walkoff glory. I meant to make note of it on my comment above that put Long on my own least-favored list.

Unfortunately, that one moment of glory doesn’t outweigh a whole career of bad-production, bad-contract, roster-clogging awfulness.

On the other hand, if the category was “Nasty Nicknames”, Long would be one of the big “winners.” “Magellan” was mean, but wonderfully evocative. Priceless.

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Haynes was a crappy thrower

but maybe this is a generational thing — there were so many guys like that in the early 80s, guys who threw hard and had breaking pitches but were utterly clueless as pitchers and just awful to watch (Bill Mooneyham, Tim Conroy, Mike Warren, Eric Plunk as a starter, Tim Birtsas) that by the time Haynes came along I couldn’t be bothered to hate him any more. Anyway, the team sucked when he was on the A’s.

Groom was just a standard issue LOOGY. I never hated him particularly.

And why did people hate Gil Heredia? It’s not his fault that the team had a bad pitching staff in 2000.

The lasting memory of him pitching game 1 (and 5) of that yankees series is why…

You are aware that Heredia won game 1, allowing 3 ERs in 6 IP?

didn’t recall that no…but he did lose game 5 badly yes?

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he got shelled

6 runs, didn’t get out of the 1st. And as always in game 5, the A’s got the tying run to the plate in the 9th, but lost.

Anyway, he was a journeyman who overachieved with the A’s. It’s not like Kevin Brown signing a massive contract with the Yankees and then monumentally sucking against the Red Sox in their Game 7.

I don't even remember Haynes... that's the impact he had.

I mean I remember the name, and vaguely recall that he was on the team at some time, but I remember nothing as to what he did or didn’t do.

Back then, my idol was Bugs Bunny, because I saw a cartoon of him playing ball - you know, the one where he plays every position himself with nobody else on the field but him? Now that I think of it, Bugs is still my idol. You have to love a ballplayer like that.

This is a great list

I might add Juan Cruz as a guy I hated in an A’s uniform. And I watched a highlight of that pot head not sliding last week and realized that, until the day I die, I’m never going to be able to forget or forgive that lump. As for favorite to un favorite, for me that’s Chavvy and Zito. Yeah, I know Chavvy’s been hurt, but when you can’t hit you should tell the manager so you don’t kill multiple seasons full of rallies. Of course, the same manager shouldn’t bat you n the heart of the lineup when you can’t hit. And as for Zito, hey Barry: just because the count is 0-2 doesn’t mean a major league hitter is going to swing at a pitch 9 inches outside. You actually need 3 strikes to get these guys out, and you aren’t really capable of getting the third.

juan cruz, how could I leave him off!!!

by timhudson on Jun 19, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chavez didn't hide anything from the managers

They played him anyway because he was supposedly needed in the field even if he couldn’t hit. He trashed his own offensive numbers because his team wanted him in there. A lot of guys wouldn’t be willing to look bad that way. That’s not on him, that’s on management.

I don't know what to think of Zito

He’s my favorite active player, and I must confess a lot of that is irrational. Out of guys who I got to see play in person, he’s the easy favorite (I was very, very young when Rickey played his last game as an Athletic).

And I would’ve not liked him more had he signed with the Mets or Rangers. Although the PR in NY would be ugly.

Hey, here's a fun one: Billy Martin

If Billy hadn’t destroyed the best rotation in baseball by piching them until their arms fell off, they would have had one hell of a club with Keough, Norris, McCatty, Langford and then Rickey, Armas and Murphy in the outfield … for years.

risking blasphemy

Dare I say Billy Bean has gone from favorite to ‘un-favorite’?

I've tried to be mellow about it,

figuring that we still understand what he means so no big deal.

Except that there really are a few on this group whose spelling/punctuation/grammar is so bad that they are genuinely incomprehensible.

I was being tongue in cheek of course. I am a writer and have before now always refrained from blogging because of the overwhelming onslaught of happy faces, shorthand and misspelled words. Now that I am blogging (while I’m at work…) I don’t have the time to actually proofread. Besides, if I indulged that part of my personality I would be driven crazy just by reading a few posts…

I'm surprised Alan Embree hasn't been mentioned yet

He wasn’t even that horrible (a quite decent ‘07), but he always had a knack for screwing up in the most gut-wrenching situations. We’d have just made a big comeback, be facing the Angels, or riding a 5 game streak and Grampa Alan was always the one to screw it up. He gets bonus negative points for being a cast-off from Boston, playing for the bad guys when they bounced the A’s out in 2003 and when they won it all in 2004.

No hate for Loaiza?

He’s gotta be up there with Rhodes and Rincon in the pantheon. He did have that one month of brilliance, but otherwise was a wholly negative influence during his tenure here, imho. Remember when he came out throwing ~85mph fastballs in his first starts as an A? Performance aside, I disliked the guy’s attitude before he came over as a FA, and he did nothing while here to change my perception of him as a questionable character. Just an unnecessarily surly dude.

Adam Melhuse??

how do hate on a backup catcher? IIRC, we was actually a pretty good pinch hitter, over all.

I liked Melhuse. Thought he got a raw deal after Kendall arrived.
