A's Sign Chacon
According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Athletics have signed Shawn Chacon. Yes, the same Shawn Chacon that beat up his former GM, Ed Wade. Chacon last pitched in the Independent League, with the Newark Bears, where he put up decent numbers. I don't really see much upside in this move, just thought it is somewhat interesting and quite out of the blue. Do you think he will get a shot with the big league club? Or will he be used as a mere minor league roster filler, with only a chance to see the Majors once again if an injury or two or three occurs?

Folks wanted Geren fired...
Sounds like Beane decided to hire a hitman instead!

Thats freakin funny.
It would be cheaper than firing him. Geren is a log.

Well...
Beane doesn’t have the heart to fire his friend, so he signs Chacon and lets Nature take its course.

anybody know what happened to bobby madrich? he was a flash in the pan for the mariners

Bobby Madritsch!
I’d say he was a little more than a flash in the pan. The M’s brought him up for their rotation in the middle of 2004 and he was a surprise success. For the second half of the season he was the M’s ace, one of the few highlights of an otherwise crappy season. Very interesting character with a great story. He had spent several years in the minors and independent league, so he was already in his late 20s when he finally debuted in the majors.
He was in the starting rotation in 2005, but he hurt his shoulder in his first game. Though it wasn’t immediately apparent, the injury was persistent and he ended up spending the whole season on the DL in a series of failed rehabs. Finally he got surgery in the offseason.
He never came back from that. The Mariners let him go. The Royals signed him to a minor-league contract, but then cut him soon after. Last year he was back in Independent League, which I assume is where he is now.
Who knows, maybe he could have another comeback. I think he’s 33 now.

What the heck is Beane thinking?
There has been alot of discussion here at AN recently about the need to advance and challenge some of our top prospects at Midland and lower. That will require the opening of some slots at Sacramento. Why in the world would BB sign yet another AAAA filler to further clog up the minor league development pipeline?
Are there many more injuries we don’t know about and BB feels the need to hire any warm bodies he can find? Weird, very weird. I’ll be watching closely to see what this seemingly useless acquisition adds to our system.

Bullpen
Bob Geren’s mishandling of the bullpen (the most on the money criticism I have seen of him this year) is probably the genesis of this move. Chacon is not going to crack the rotation and may not even crack the big league roster, but he is there as an insurance policy in case Weurtz/Springer/Whoever loses their arm in a tragic pitching accident.

exactly
I see Chacon as a long-relief replacement just in case we pull another “Dan Giese” on one of our relief pitchers (I’m looking at you, E-gon). Unless another player goes to the 60 day DL, I just don’t see it worth being the risk of running a player through waivers to put Chacon on the 40-man roster. If they were planning to do anything other than hold him as insurance, they probably would have already found a 40-man spot for him, albeit in the minors.
Also, I don’t get the focused outrage on Chacon. There are other players in MLB that drive drunk, beat their spouses, take drugs, don’t pay taxes, etc. Now, I certainly think what Chacon did was morally repugnant, but why is what he did beyond the pale while we let equally eggregious things slide for other players? Is it because Chacon is a fringe player and some of these other guys (Myers, Delmon Young, Dukes, etc.) aren’t?

I guess it makes sense, in a way, to keep trying for those AAA titles.
