Hey there. Since I am down here in Memphis, I had the opportunity to go to the Memphis Redbirds game last night and saw Brett Wallace at the plate a few times against the Dodgers affiliate. I thought he looked ok. I didn't realize that he was such a large kid. He has a large midsection and legs which might make people nervous about his staying power at the hot corner. He also hit some hard balls on the ground to second and finished with a single. I think the Cardinals might have rushed him just a bit--a little more seasoning at AA might have helped him.

Lot of pitchers last night. Sharpe came up from Stockton and went 3 ip, giving up 3 R, followed by H-ROD going 3 IP, giving up H, 2 BB, and 4 K. They are really stretching Henry out which makes for him to be a very versatile reliever.

Couple of notes: Cardenas played 3B tonight and was 0-3, with a BB, RBI, and K. Spencer extended a modest hitting streak to 6 games and is hitting .375 over his last 10 games. 9 Rockhounds were selected to the All-Star game, Banwart, Cardenas, Carter, Demel, Donaldson, Everidge, Jason Fernandez, Godfrey and Horton.

Pitching in this game was not good. Affronti, the Rockhounds 2B had to come in and pitch an inning.

Weeks DH: 2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI  .391 BA  Hit his 5th HR on the season. To be a broken record, Weeks has got to be moving up soon, he needs a challenge. 17 game hit streak, and a line of .391/.481/.652  He is batting .429 in June. With Weeks in Midland, the Rockhounds line-up is something scary.

Poirier started for the Ports, going 3.1 ip, giving up 6 ER.

Carignan made his first appearance of the season going 1 Ip, H, K ....Nice to see him get started this year.

The Cougars struck out 18 times last night...Granted the game went 14, but they need more balls in play.

Haviland: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, BB, 6 K  Getting hit more often over his last few games.

Storey: 1 IP, 2 K  .55 ERA on the season. I'm going to keep talking about this guy until he disappoints me. Hitters are now batting .093 against him. He has 22 K to just 1 BB in 16.1 IP this season. Nice move to the bullpen A's.

 

Players that are below the radar that excite me, Storey and Smalley for the Cougars.
