Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

I'm actually posting this as a way of bringing back readers who may have abandoned my blog because of my IE7 bug (which I finally solved today). No more crashes for those of you using IE7, I hope.

I read the article and disagree

Simply put, if the A’s can have the same budget in 2010 that they have this year they could afford to carry Holliday at $18 million if he accepted arbitration. They could keep Holliday and still have cash to make improvements elsewhere in 2010.

Unless ownership intends to slash the payroll there is no real downside to offering Holliday arbitration, unless the A’s want absolutely nothing to do with him next season.

The theory is that Holliday will not rebound from his current pace

and the 1 year arbitration number will be mucho higher than the annual multi-year offers he’ll see.

Not that I know such things, but I've heard tell

that the free agent market is kinda slim pickin’s this coming off-season and that several teams with big pocketbooks are looking for an outfielder this time ’round, and that Holliday will make his pay regardless.

That’s the word on the streets.

I think [the A's announcers] just speak in code.. "A tough outing again for Brett Anderson" means "Has anyone checked with his 2nd grade teacher to see if maybe he’s actually right-handed?" --Nico

I could see it going either way...

…though I suspect Boras will try to play off any down numbers as the “Oakland Factor” or the “Coliseum Factor”. I could also see some high-paying teams buying into that.

Accepting arbitration is a long shot, I think, though it wouldn’t seriously shock me if they did.

Scott Boras

As an agent, has Scott Boras ever accepted arbitration?

Can you see the meeting between Boras and Holliday, …“Matt, I think it best that we accept the A’s offer of arbitration”, "

“but why Scott?”

“Well, Matt. I think that playing in Oakland with all that foul territory, drops your batting average 20 points in itself. That got to be good and help you get back you rep. …….Also, I know how much you want to be talked about on mlbtraderumors.com again for a whole year….again”

“Scott, are you smoking crack? Get me a 4 year deal for 80 to 100 million, or your ass is fired!”

Maddux

accepted arbitration once or twice with Boras as his agent toward the end of the prime of his career. I’m sure Boras FAs have accepted arbitration many other times. But yeah, there’s almost no chance Holliday accepts arbitration.

I'm worried a bit about a crappy team signing Holliday and the A's not getting the first round pick.

I don't want a first round pick.

I either want a MLB-ready (or near) player in trade or I want Holliday. A pick is two steps backward (time-wise) considering what we paid to get the guy and puts any on-field success that much farther away.
