GOG 2009 #22
Well, look at that! The GOG just turned 22, surpassing the majority of the A's starting rotation!
Interleague play continues with a trip down to Los Angeles (not Anaheim). In contrast to some years past, the Senior Circuit has not been kind to the 2009 Athletics (but then again, no team really has). After series against the Diamondbacks and Giants, Oakland has fallen to 1-5 for interleague play. Now, they have to win back their pride against a Dodgers team that is only slightly behind pace to win 2/3 of their games. Sorry for the late posting, your GOG is below.
Links
- Probable pitchers
- Dodgers stats
- ...and I still haven't been grading any results. What a surprise it will be when I finally get all caught up (probably in 2015 or something) and we see how everyone has been doing. Seriously, I feel bad about this, but things are just a little too busy for me right now.
GOG #22 :: Not-So-Artful Dodgers (37 points possible)
Three game series @ Los Angeles Dodgers -- June 16-18
UPDATE: answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 Dodgers
- The 2009 Dodgers are sporting a team batting average of .279, tied with the Mets and behind only the Angels. Oakland, of course, is in dead last with a team batting average of .235. Picking a round number like 32 at-bats per game, you might expect the Dodgers to have 4 more hits than the A's over the course of the series. Will the A's beat that expectation? (i.e. do the A's get more hits in the series than the Dodger's total minus 4) [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] A's are outhit 25 to 24. So they exceeded expectations!!
- Dallas Braden vs Clayton Kershaw is pretty much the only A's-Dodgers pitching matchup where LA would have youth on their side. Predict BB/K/ER for the 21-year old Kershaw [2 points each] Kershaw :: 3 BB, 8 K, 0 ER
- Line 'em up :: Who gets more at-bats in the leadoff spot, Cabrera or Kennedy? Will Cust bat second for at least two games? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Kennedy leads off all three games. Cust bats second only once (game 2).
- The Dodgers have managed to score a lot of runs so far this year despite hitting even fewer home runs than Oakland (see question 2 for how this could have happened). How many total home runs in a three game series between these two squadrons of sluggers? [3 points] 5 HR total (including Crosby and Rajai... somehow)
- How many stolen bases for Juan Pierre? [3 points] 0
- How many at-bats for Daric Barton in the series? Will he get his first major league hit of the season? [3 points for the first question, +-1 for the second] 2 AB for Barton, no hits
- Was a year and a half of Milton Bradley worth six years of Andre Ethier? Predict Ethier's AB/H/XBH [2 points each] Ethier :: 11 AB, 3 H, 1 XBH
- So far, in three June appearances, Russ Springer has yet to give up a run (not that impressive really, but I wanted to say something nice about the guy). Predict his IP/BB/ER against the Dodgers [2 points each] 1.0 IP, 0 BB, 0 ER
- How many Ks for Broxton, who leads the universe with a ridiculous 14.91 K/9 so far this year? [3 points] no Ks for Broxton
First pitch is coming at 7:10. Post your answers............now!
Results
This was a high-scoring round, quite unlike the A's offense. Wouldn't it be great if Oakland averaged 8 runs / game? But even if that was the case, Braden would still get stuck with fruitattack's score for run support. Well, that was mean. Sorry.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 8.03846 points
- standard deviation = 4.77058 points
- mode = 9 points
Your Scores
Congratulations to Blicks on the win! Also, I tend to focus on the standing by total points (holy crap! mikeA has pulled to within one point of zaniac75!), but the standings by AVG are important too. I mean, check out swatnick's scores. He has 148 total points (good enough for 4th place overall) but that's after missing 5 GOGs. And, if you scroll down the table a way, you'll see pam5981 who has wrecked the 7 GOG that she has taken part in.

1. Series outcome [3 points] A’s 3-0
2. The 2009 Dodgers are sporting a team batting average of .279, tied with the Mets and behind only the Angels. Oakland, of course, is in dead last with a team batting average of .235. Picking a round number like 32 at-bats per game, you might expect the Dodgers to have 4 more hits than the A’s over the course of the series. Will the A’s beat that expectation? (i.e. do the A’s get more hits in the series than the Dodger’s total minus 4) 1 if right, -1 if wrong] Yes
3. Dallas Braden vs Clayton Kershaw is pretty much the only A’s-Dodgers pitching matchup where LA would have youth on their side. Predict BB/K/ER for the 21-year old Kershaw [2 points each] 4/6/3
4. Line ’em up :: Who gets more at-bats in the leadoff spot, Cabrera or Kennedy? Will Cust bat second for at least two games? [1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Kennedy/Yes
5. The Dodgers have managed to score a lot of runs so far this year despite hitting even fewer home runs than Oakland (see question 2 for how this could have happened). How many total home runs in a three game series between these two squadrons of sluggers? [3 points] 6
6. How many stolen bases for Juan Pierre? [3 points] 2
7. How many at-bats for Daric Barton in the series? Will he get his first major league hit of the season? [3 points for the first question, +-1 for the second] 6, yes
8. Was a year and a half of Milton Bradley worth six years of Andre Ethier? Predict Ethier’s AB/H/XBH [2 points each] 10/3/1
9. So far, in three June appearances, Russ Springer has yet to give up a run (not that impressive really, but I wanted to say something nice about the guy). Predict his IP/BB/ER against the Dodgers [2 points each] 1/0/1
10. How many Ks for Broxton, who leads the universe with a ridiculous 14.91 K/9 so far this year? [3 points] 2
