As far as signability

I like our chances at getting Stassi, I’m cautiously optimistic about Krol and I have serious doubts about Dyson. Everyone else I’m assuming will be signed.

by OkayJay81 on Jun 10, 2009 10:42 AM PDT reply actions

I wonder how much influence the particular

team that drafts a guy has on his signability? With the A’s, a player has to realize that he has a very legitimate shot at making the team based on his skill and ability. Imagine being a third baseman drafted by the Yankees? You’re only hope is to be traded, but if you do well the Yankee’s may hold you back to prevent you from going to a team within the division.

I definitely think team has something to do with it

I think the A’s have a fairly good reputation among prospects for developing players, rewarding performance, and giving guys a fair shot.

But the main factor is always going to be money, how much does the prospect thing he’s worth and how much does the team think he’s worth.

how is it that high school baseball players can sign with an agent

and not lose amateur status, but if NCAA basketball or football players sign with an agent, they’re ineligible at the college level?

Because he's a minor?

I have no idea. Maybe they have an informal arrangement with the agent until he’s signed. Good question.

They are just "advisors"

Technically the high school guys don’t sign with agents they just get advised by them. It’s a pretty flimsy distinction but it’s the NCAA so it’s not unexpected.

I imagine money plays a role here to.

College ball isn’t the moneymaker that basketball and football are, so maybe they just don’t give a rip?

BA on the Dyson pick

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=1172#more-1172

Dyson ranked as the top prospect in the Palmetto State this year (No. 38 on our top 200), and we expected him to be drafted no later than the second round. A Tommy John surgery survivor with a power arm, Dyson’s spotty command led to a so-so redshirt sophomore season this spring (9-4, 5.21), but he was overpowering at times, running his fastball up to 98 mph and flashing an above-average power curveball. The combination of Dyson’s high pricetag and his checkered medical history were the biggest reasons for his slide, and it will be a surprise if the A’s open up the checkbook to sign him as a 10th-rounder.

Via The Baseball Draft Report

Josh Leyland (California) – probably a first baseman in the end due to his massive frame (6-3, 230), but will be drafted as a catcher and will be given every chance possible to stick; love his approach at plate, gigantic raw power, and universally praised makeup; debatable on whether or not going to school (Washington State commit) to develop into either a mashing 1B high round pick or an offensively-minded, competent defensive catcher would be best for his development, but it’s probably a moot point – it would be a big upset if Leyland ever winds up in Pullman; would be much more highly touted in a different year, but a definite sleeper that shouldn’t be overlooked

actually it gives him a chance to get healthy

he had some shoulder problems early in the year which forced him to DH for about a month and lowered his stock.

I can't imagine

The A’s taking him with their 1st pick of the 2nd day without 1) a solid understanding of his bonus expectations and 2) getting approval to commit that sum of money (or slightly more) to getting him signed. I hope I’m right, it would be great to get him in the system.

If the A's can build around Holiday, Furcal, Cust, and maybe call up 2nd baseman Wes Childs at some point in the year, they have a shot to take a weak AL West. -- jameersju post on ESPN.com

Exactly

I am sure there was some discussions with Strassi overnight.

This article says:

With a full-ride scholarship to UCLA on the table, the Stassis wanted “top 20 money”…Say you get $700,000 to sign. After you pay your taxes and your adviser, it’s 350K," Jim Stassi said. “That’s not going to last very long for someone just out of high school…”

“Top 20” to me means “not in the Top 10”. Below are what the “Top 20” got last year. With the economy in bad shape, bonuses may be a little lower this year. So, I think $1.6 million should be enough for the Stassis.

10. Houston, Jason Castro, c, Stanford, $2.07 million
11. Texas, Justin Smoak, 1b, South Carolina, $3.5 million
12. Oakland, Jemile Weeks, 2b, Miami, $1.91 million
13. St. Louis, Brett Wallace, 3b-1b, Arizona State, $1.84 million
14. Minnesota, Aaron Hicks, of-rhp, Woodrow Wilson HS, Long Beach, Calif., $1.78 million
15. L.A. Dodgers, Ethan Martin, rhp-3b, Stephens County HS, Taccoa, Ga., $1.73 million
16. Milwaukee, Brett Lawrie, c, Brookswood SS, Langley, B.C., $1.7 million
17. Toronto, David Cooper, 1b, California, $1.5 million
18. N.Y. Mets (from Atlanta, Tom Glavine), Ike Davis, 1b-of, Arizona State, $1,575,000
19. Chicago Cubs, Andrew Cashner, rhp, TCU, $1.54 million
20. Seattle, Joshua Fields, rhp, Georgia, unsigned

Yeah, I don't know any 19 year olds who could live off 350K for very long.

What a stupid ass thing to say.

It has to last him until he reaches the majors though, which could be

anything up to five years. Fair play to the guy – if the system allows it there’s no harm in seeking out the best deal for yourself. If people are willing to pay $xm for your services then why should you sign for below that?

He has the option of going to college on a scholarship if nobody meets his demands so he’s in a win-win situation here.

Bitter much?

Yea, most guys out of high school would love to try to get buy on that much. But honestly, I think it would take at least that much to get me to give up a full ride to UCLA. For a kid in high school to skip college I think it would be smart to get at least enough to pay for school and a cover expenses for a few years while giving baseball a shot.

Not if you bust out.

IF you bust out youre going to be 25-7 years old with a high school diploma and have done nothing with your life up till then, making it pretty hard to go to college and get a solid job in the real world. Hell 350k doesn’t even buy you a house in the good part of Oakland. Especially getting a full ride to UCLA, which is probably valued at 160k, youre only looking at like 190K vs 3 years in UCLA valued @ 160k + 1.5 million when coming out (present value dollars assuming that there is not inflation in draft bonuses beyond societal inflation). Yes there is more risk in the second proposition but I am assuming youd risk 350k for an opportunity to make up to $6.16m (what talents like wieters got) more likely to make $2m and a guarantee of 160k.

The A's KNOW what Stassi wants though.

He’s an easy late 1st rounder if he didn’t have signability issues. He slipped to the 4th round because he wanted lots of money and was considered a hard sign.

With Stassi/Ortiz and a number of other catchers drafted (but specifically Stassi)

does anybody here think that there is a higher possibility that Donaldson will be tried out at 3b?

by dtownmbrown on Jun 10, 2009 4:59 PM PDT reply actions

I don't think so

I doubt that the draft will have any effect on prospects already in the system. Donaldson will probably continue along his normal development path, that may or may not involve changing positions, but the presence of Stassi or Ortiz will likely have no effect on it.

by OkayJay81 on Jun 10, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya, I agree

looking at the org. depth chart, there’s still room for prospects to jump in and see where they pan out among the MiLB ranks…

witty remark

by dtownmbrown on Jun 10, 2009 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think organizational need plays a HUGE part in the draft

Because 90% of everyone (draftees, players in the system, etc.) aren’t going to pan out anyway. Stassi is far more likely than not to never reach the majors at all … same with Donaldson, whoever. And we’re talking about 3-4 years out at least regardless, and who knows what position the organization, players within the organization, etc. will be in then. In extreme cases (Orioles with Wieters being an example) where the organization has an absolute young stud position player just coming up (pitchers being a different story, as you can never have enough pitching), I can see that swaying a decision, but the A’s don’t have anyone like that.

I remember a couple of years ago when the A’s had “a ton” of young catchers in the system – Olivo is the best of them and he’s nothing to write home about. Laird is very marginal. At tough positions I think you get as many as possible and hope.

There has been some talk of Stassi playing 2b.

Though most expect him to be a solid big league defender behind the plate.
