Draft Day 2 Open Thread
A's selected C Max Stassi for their 4th pick! This is a huge upside pick and will take a lot of money to sign him. Considering we didn't have a second round pick, I don't see it as a problem. This is a great pick. Many thought he would go to the Sox or the Yanks. I'm pretty happy right now.
Let's keep it going baby! I love how quick this is going.

Oh yeah.
I was hearing Sox, Yanks, or Rays as a 1st rounder. He’s easily a 1st round talent.
Here’s to some overslot mania!!!

With a full-ride scholarship to UCLA on the table, the Stassis wanted "top 20 money" to pull the Honkers standout away from the Pac-10 school and into the pros, said Max’s father and coach, Jim Stassi.
"We have a figure in our head what UCLA is worth," he said. "And when those clubs called, we said we are not going to make a deal at slot to get it done.
"He would have gone in the (compensation round) if we had settled for slot."

If they were settling for slot, I could’ve seen him going in the 1st round.

He's made it public that he's looking for top 20 money
it would be stupid for any team who wasn’t willing to pay that to draft him.
Hopefully the A’s aren’t stupid.

I think there is a good chance he gets signed
There’s no guarantees of course, but it sounds like he has been pretty straight forward with what his price will be, and teams don’t usually use a 4th round pick on a player unless they plan to make a real effort to get the player signed.
A couple good guys just taken
Dywer and Bailey taken.
yay - my alma mater!
can’t say I’ve followed their baseball this year… though they did beat Strasburg – well, they beat the reliever who came in the 8th inning after Strasburg held them scoreless through 7.

it’s says he throws left handed. That would be weird for a 3b. What’s going on?

I'd guess he's not going to serve a mission
Normally that’s done at age 19.
and a comment on the stats – he OPS’d 1.060, but BYU as a team OPS’d .864 – there are a lot of football scores at their home stadium.

I just posted on another diary, but did anyone look at the Stassi video? Is it just
me, or is he limping around the basepaths, on that first hit, and later in the video, he grabs his hammy as he rounds 1st base.
Yikes that's no good
He’s only in high school, but that seems like a funny video to put up. Where is it from?

Yeah
A young Suzuki, and Donaldson in the minors.
Especially with prep catchers taking forever to develop...
It would be surprising if Stassi gets here before he is 23-24 which is like 5-6 years in the minors especially if he signs late, due to prep catchers often not calling their own games and needing to learn how to handle pitchers. By that time Suzuki will probably be gone and Donaldson/Powell/Galaraga will be our starter. Ortiz would fit well probably taking less time to get to the bigs 3-4 years, as he is much more likely to sign quickly.

Catchers
Paramore
Donaldson
Gallaraga (Spelling)
Stassi (if signed)
Ortiz
Talk about depth
Suzuki
Powell
If youre doing it in terms of the teams depth I would do it this way
Suzuki
Powell
Donaldson (best prospect)
Gallaraga (being MLB ready is worth a lot for a catching prospect)
Stassi (has upside right above Donaldsons or as Andy Seiler says : A’s pick Max Stassi. Crap.)
Paramore (has had some success in pro ball)
Ortiz could pass up paramore on the totem pole depending on pro results.

From the MLB draft preview:
“He redshirted his freshman season due to a torn labrum and was brought back slowly a year ago. At times he flashed two plus pitches in his fastball and his slider, but the stuff and his command have been inconsistent and his results have followed suit. Someone may take a shot based on the pure stuff, but there’s a little bit of a buyer-beware buzz with the right-hander.”

Here's what Sickels said about Dyson
Sam Dyson, South Carolina: STRENGTHS: Can hit 96-97 MPH, one of the hardest throwers in the draft; promising curveball. WEAKNESSES: Very erratic college performance; has labrum surgery on his resume; fastball is straight; more thrower than pitcher. PROJECTION: Will be attractive to an upside-oriented team in the supplemental round, or possibly late in the first. Yankees at 29 might be a good fit.
