The bigger disappointment- Crosby or Giambi?
Now, I know that Giambi's career is far more colorful and full of more gold stars than Bobby's will ever be- but lately I've been wondering just who might be the biggest disappointment to A's fans this year- Jason or Bobby. I mean with Bobby- we really didn't expect a great deal, did we? After watching him flail away at the ball last year- his hyped first "full healthy year"- and watching the disastrous attempt at getting rid of him in the offseason- we thought he would be little more than a benchwarmer this year. Surprise- Bobby has been an almost full time player due to injuries and in the inability of the A's to find a reliable third baseman. Still, Bobby has pretty much did what we expected him to do, flail away at the ball and continue to look completely lost at the plate most of the time.
Giambi however, came riding into town on the white stallion (okay, maybe a graying stallion) and was hyped (along with sub-par Holliday) as being the savior of the ailing A's offense. I've got to admit, I believed the storybook crap- I believed that Jason still had the ability the hit homeruns on a consistent basis and lead this team to wonderful places. I thought for sure the Yankees would be truly sorry they dumped him- er, rather "didn't pick up my contract" as Jason says. When Billy Beane was sitting there in the press conference with this schoolgirl crush look on his face, gushing all over Jason and telling him how wonderful it was to have him back, I just knew that Jason would lead the way.
Well, here we are two months into the season and it's obvious that Giambi doesn't have nearly the offensive prowness he used to have. Sure, he can jack one into the stands now and then -when he manages to get a bad pitch to hit- but most of the time he's standing there watching the third strike or sending another easy fly ball in into the outfield for an out. More disturbing to me is the look on his face- and that is a look of uncertainty. Long gone is the Jason of yesterday that seemed to overflow with arrogance and confidence- now we have a player who seems to know his glory days are over for good.
So if I had to vote, I'd cast my meaningless vote for Giambi as the biggest disappointment of the year, so far.

I do not agree with the thought that there can be any debate.
I like Chewbobby right now. I am upbeat about the direction he is going, and am amazed at the progress he is making in his fielding versatility. The math will tell us at the end of the year, but I think he will be a plus level defender at 3rd. I have secretly hoped for this ever since Chavez started getting hurt….

well I think Bobby wore out all the disappointment a long time ago
so you expected nothing and got nothing, so yeah sure, Giambi is the bigger disappointment this year…but what could you have really expected? The bigger disappointment is probably Cabrera and the fact that the two 3b went down and getting nothing there

I was a big proponent of bringing Giambi back...
but what has struck me is the fact that he hasn’t changed his “short right field porch” approach to hitting. He still tries to pull high and outside fastballs. Instead of pulling them, he simply can’t catch up to them.
He has a few more holes in his swing than before, which is to be expected. However, I did expect more. I thought he’d be a shoe-in for 25 HRs. Now, I’m not sure anyone on this team will hit that.
Quite honestly, I’m most disappointed in Holliday’s attitude and Cust’s results.

not disappointed in Giambi
He’s at least hitting at league average (.334 wOBA, .266 EQA, 98 OPS+). I do expect him to hit more when the weather heats up, but amongst the disappointments on the A’s, he doesn’t come close to rating for me.
How about friggin 0-Cab? That fucker has been one of the ten worst hitters in baseball. I wasn’t expecting much, but as much as we rip on the third baseman of this team, and they don’t belong anywhere near a major league field imo, they are outhitting 0-Cab. How about Ryan Sweeney v.2.0? He hasn’t just been bad. He’s quietly been atrocious. Russ Springer? Dana Eveland? Santiago Casilla? Sean Gallagher? Hannahan? Giambi is really your big disappointment here?

+1 on O-Cab
He has been absolutely f***ing worthless so far. I’m not sure that if Chavvy or Nomar were healthy that Crosby wouldn’t be starting at SS more often with OC getting some additional “time off” between games.
And what the hell is going on with Sweeney? Aside from his rather spectacular highlight reel of catches his swing is all F***ed up….

Your list is mostly Accurate
I was trying not to get TOO down by listing all of the negative things I see about the team- but your’e right- Cabrerra is a joke and it seems hard to justify not putting Crosby back at SS when he plays equally defensively and hits no worse that Cabrerra. Joaquin Garcia (alias Casilla) will be gone by year end- Hannahan will be back in AA where in belongs and Eveland will eventually get his pitch back. As for Holliday, watching him not even make an effort to catch an outfield fly is pretty painful, but he knows his future is with the Yankees, not us, so why bother? But yes, Giambi is the one who had all of the hype – so he is my biggest disappointment.

That sucks for a 1B/DH, you know.
With zero defensive value, Giambi needs to be an above average hitter in order to actually be contributing to the team.
By being a league average hitter, he’s performing below average for a first baseman or DH.

re
Of course, but we’re still comparing a negative with gaping maws of suck. Let’s also not forget that Giambi has had some slow starts in recent years, and is already heating up. He put up an .808 ops in May, which is in the neighborhood of 120 ops+ for the month. Really, this guy is the big disappointment?

My only disappointment with Crosby
Is that he is playing so much.

Each player deserves his own "disappointment thread"
I think any Hannahan or Sweeney at bat makes me cringe the most, though.

There really hasnt been one positive has there....
Hard to believe the A’s record is only as bad as it is given how terrible almost every single player has performed.
I hate hate hate that Adam Kennedy is our best player because we all know he won’t sustain.

Of the two...
…I’m most disappointed in Giambi.
We weren’t expecting anything from Crosby anyway. As closetasfan said above, we wore that out long ago.

Giambi.
Everyone knew Crosby was going to suck. Why both Crosby and Hannahan are EVER in the lineup is a astute example of Geren’s stupidity (it should be Cunningham in RF, Cust at DH. Giambino at 1B, and ONE of HannaCros EVERY DAY.)
Giambi is hitting league average, but as mikev said, that’s awful for a 1B with negative defensive value. Giambi is one of the worst defensive 1B in baseball right now. He has negative value.

Giambi's line in May - .226/.388/.419
Hopefully he can keep that up.

Disappointed but not surprised
In the pre-steroid era, players’ careers often tanked at around age 38, and the decline was often precipitous. If you figure David Ortiz, at some point, shaved five years off his age, his decline and fall this year isn’t all that strange either.
It’s possible Giambi can still put together a good season, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Crosby is Crosby, no disappointment because no expectation.
If I were looking for most disappointing member of the team, I’d go with Dava Eveland, Sean Gallagher, Gio Gonzalez, Orlando Cabrera, Russ Springer, Joey Devine, Jerry Blevins, and Nomar Garciaparra. These guys all either are injured, underproduced, or sucked outright when at least I expected a different outcome.

Gonzalez, Gallagher, Eveland
3 biggest disappointments for sure
