DLD 5/8/09 - Now what?

Seems like everybody has an opinion on Manny:

Lee Jenkins (SI.com)

Tom Verducci here and here.

Joe Po

Heyman

Mark Purdy

Ratto

My favorite comment came from the McC thread (spelling corrected):

Manny being Banny

OK, enough with the PED stuff. How about some other linkage.

LL has a great post on advanced stats, where they encourage those who don't know tRA from EPA to get their questions answered.

The A's actually scored 9 runs yesterday during a day game. Maybe they should consider moving to Barrow, Alaska - starting Sunday, there will be no night games there until early August.

Tim Kawakami had this column a couple of days ago. I normally don't pay much attention to what (little) he has to say, but this line caught my eye (and I'd like it back, please).

Infield non-keepers: Jason Giambi, Mark Ellis, Nomar Garciaparra, Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby, Gregorio Petit, Jack Hannahan, Landon Powell.

General Manager Billy Beane has never wasted as much time, energy and money as he has on this predictably injury-ravaged bunch.

If Bobby continues like his last few games, Kawakami might need to change his opinion, but otherwise his Beane comment is right on.

The BART extension to San Jose appears to be going forward.

Happy Friday Dumping.

Yay for Friday DLDs!

My inner geek was rewarded last night when I saw this. Very well done, though the previews really made me feel like a 12-year-old boy…Seriously, thank goodness for baseball, because except for this, summer 2009 has crap. And this on my birthday? Good thing I’ll be on vacation…

Oh wait, you want baseball links?

DiMaggio dies.

Melvin fired. So was the hitting coach. Pitching coach reassigned as well.

Rickey’s going to Cooperstown today.

A’s take on Toronto tonight at 7:05. Yay for weekends! Yay for baseball!! Yay!!!!!!

Disagree completely.

The books are significantly better than the movies in the Harry Potter series, but that’s true about 98% of the time.

Conversely, the Transformer movies are based on a crappy cartoon from 80s that was a complete (and fairly transparent) marketing ploy to sell action figures.

The fact that there are “big boy” movies for the now grown-up kids who watched that drivel in the 80’s is even more pathetic. The G.I. Joe movie should give you a heads-up on the little kid hard-wiring they’re tapping into. Frankly, I find this trend even more disturbing than thinking loud, bright, flashy and action-y will get us all out to the theaters all summer long. Damn you, Twister. Damn you straight to hell!

Yes, TF was made to market toys, what of it?

I suppose you are also one of those people who rail against product placement in movies and tv, as though seeing actual, real products instead of dopey analogs somehow ruins the viewing experience.

TF is a fun movie that involves giant robots fighting each other. I fail to see what’s so pathetic about it. By that logic, comic book/Star Trek/Pixar movies are pathetic for much the same reason and baseball movies are pathetic for trying to cash in by romanticizing a sport.

In retrospect, comparing HP to Crosby was overly harsh as they are entertaining in their own right. I’d say they’re more like a league average hitter, though a specific candidate doesn’t immediately come to mind.

What's pathetic about the whole concept was

that it was made as a method to sell something. While they have made a lot of products revolving around comic books, Star Trek, Pixar and baseball, those products were not invented solely to sell something. It goes to intent. And I think the whole Transformers thing was consumerism at its worst.

And please resist making predictors about me and/or my character.

Booo BART to San Jose

I’m all for public transit (in fact, I advocate for it quite a bit), but the plans to San Jose are built on some really specious arguments and terribly inflated ridership projections that have 0% chance of ever being true. The costs that are then supposed to be born by this non-existent swell of South Bay ridership will mean both cutting VTA light rail/bus service funding and expansion in favor of BART subsidies, and increased fares for the current riders of BART (which regressively harms the poorest the most – the most dependant on using BART).
What’s more, BART hasn’t done a good enough job of addressing the service needs of the populations living within their current service area. Santa Clara county wasn’t even one of the original buy-in counties that agreed to tax themselves to build BART in the first place. Those counties should get priority over San Jose’s pie-in-the-sky dream of a downtown subway which won’t even serve SJ’s areas of highest activity or job density just so they can feel like a big-boy grown up city.

/end rant

by cityplANner on May 8, 2009 10:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

what rant?

expensive mass transit schemes are the exercise bike of california voters – frequently purchased but rarely used . capital intensive projects that crowd out needed bus service are a constant winner at the polls. I believe san jose light rail covers something like 10% of its costs from ridership.

by ojoe on May 8, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't measure effectiveness of mass transit solely by profit / loss measures

It’s also important to measure avoided costs in other areas. Extra parking lots in SF & larger bridges vs cost of Bart beyond what riders pay directly. The ability of folks to get around without having to own a car. Having a decent way for drunks to get home without using a car.

I don’t know enough about SJ mass transit to speak to those issues there, but my experience in SJ is that it’s very sprawed out, making any mass transit less effective. Compared to SF, I would not be surprised if SJ lite rail is a boondoggle.

by MobiusKlein on May 8, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

SJ light rail is also a boondogle because it was designed around the

civicly-linked egos of the major politicos in SJ at the time. More cost effective infrastructure and rail cars could have been used and better routes should have/could have been planned. The sprawl of SJ isn’t the only reason their ridership numbers are low.

by cityplANner on May 8, 2009 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My main rail expericence in SJ is via Caltrain

And it’s usually on the weekend when the trains have to stop in every podunk ‘San’ between Francisco and Jose.
Gads, and hour and a half on the train. Lets hope that the California high speed rail comes out better than that.

I still blame the Sprawl too, though. SJ reminds me of LA

26 games in and Bobby is leading Holliday, Giambi, and Cabrera in OPS, beating cabrera by over 200 points. Athletics acquired 2B Adam Kennedy from the Rays for a player to be named later and cash.
How far Kennedy has fallen — looks like he’ll be organizational depth in Oakland, reporting to Triple-A Sacramento. Still, if anyone can find a use for Kennedy, it is the A’s and their collection of misfit toys.
