GOG 2009 #11

You all will have to forgive me if this isn't the most insightful or creative GOG ever. I have the first meeting of my thesis committee in five hours and was up all night putting together slides for my talk (you would think that one of these days I would have some deadline and then get working more than 24 hours beforehand… but you would be wrong). Ok, enough of my complaints about grad school, it's GOG time!

Star-divide

The Athletics are facing the Blue Jays for the second time already (they will play on more series at the end of July/start of August, also in Oakland). Just like last time, the Blue Jays lead the AL East and have scored more runs than any other team in baseball. But, even though the Jays took the last series, 2 games to 1, you have to give Oakland some credit for facing a team that is averaging 6.1 runs per game to a measly 10 runs over 3 games. Let's hope that the pitchers step up to follow Cahill's example from yesterday, and some warm day games heat up the A's bats.

GOG #11 :: Can't Sleep, Jays Will Eat Me (34 points possible)

Three game series vs Toronto Blue Jays -- May 8-10

Update -- answers added below in bold

  1. Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 TOR
  2. Do the A's score 6 or more runs in any game of this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
  3. In his last start, Brian Tallet took a no-hitter into the 7th inning (but ultimately ended up with a no-decision). How many hits to the A's get off of him? [3 points] Tallet allowed 2 hits
  4. Sean Gallagher, back in the rotation :: Predict his IP/K/ER [2 points each] 5 IP / 3K / 3 ER
  5. Which A's relief pitcher logs the most innings in the series? Which reliever throws the most pitches? [3 points each] Wuertz pitched the most innings, Blevins threw the most pitches
  6. Will there be a Landon Powell sighting in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes
  7. We should have batted Marco leadoff. Who knew?? So far this year, Scutaro has an OBP of .467 in 30 plate appearances to lead off a game. How many times does he get on base in his three leading-off-the-game appearances of this series? [3 points] Marco got on base to start 2 of the 3 games
  8. Musical chairs on the infield :: Predict how many at-bats each for Crosby, Petit, and Hannahan [2 points each] Crosby got 7 AB, Petit got 0 AB, and Hannahan got 5 AB, as Adam Kennedy screwed up everyone's answers
  9. This one should be a piece of cake :: Predict an Oakland hitter who has an 0-5 game. If you think that no Athletic will go 0-5 in the series, then that is an acceptable answer. [3 points] no Athletic even got 5 AB in a game this series (we did have some 0-4, though)
  10. The Bay Area is where fly balls go to die :: As of this morning, the A's have crept up to within one of the Giants in te team HR category. By the time games finish on Sunday, will Oakland have caught up? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yep, the A's now lead the Giants 18-16 in team HR
  11. Weekend matinees :: Is attendance higher for Saturday or Sunday's game? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Duchscherer bobblehead day narrowly beat out Mother's day -- 15,817 to 15,126

Ok, you all get to post your answers now, and I get to go convince a bunch of professors that I know something about physics. Deadline is 7:05 pm. I haven't graded GOG #10 yet, but that'll probably happen sometime this weekend.

Results

Everyone did really well this series! I wish I could say the same for the A's. Congratulations to crb29 on a clear victory, finishing two points ahead of the nearest competition.
