Melvin out in Arizona, A.J Hinch in!
ESPN is reporting that the Arizona Diamondbacks have fired manager Bob Melvin. The Diamondbacks will replace Melvin with 34 year old former Oakland A's catcher A.J. Hinch. Hinch was the V.P. of player development for the Diamondbacks prior to his promotion which is due to be announced by the team in Friday.
At least the former friend, and maybe current friend, of former AL Rookie of the year Ben Grieve is doing well for himself in baseball, unlike Ben Grieve. I am glad to see that A.J. is doing well for himself. I was just looking through the story and man, it sure seems like Arizona is having some offensive problems that would rival ours. Eric Byrnes is hitting .139.
Onto the A's, I keep hearing the famous tag line, maybe this will be the day that gets us going. How many games do we play where we hear this and it never materializes, but hey here's to hoping that today is the one that gets us going. Let's Go A's!!

I wouldn't know AJ Hinch...
if he walked in my living room right this minute. Admittely, the bars just closed at 2 here in Boston, and I’m not all there, but AJ Hinch? Who knew he was a top-ranking baseball executive? Was he even in the game very long? Without looking, I’m guessing 3-4 years in Oakland followed by 1-2 in KC (could be wrong)?
Anyway, I should take not being able to recognize AJ Hinch’s pale, gross facial hair-free face and be fortunate that I don’t remember, then go to bed, with work looming in a short few. But really, AZ? AJ Hinch? Mark Grace clearly wasn’t interested. They would look less desparate if they hired him as their catcher.

Hinch is
Currently the Vice President for Player Development (basically he’s been in charge of the DBucks draft and minor leagues for a few years). Will be intersting to see how this works out or for how long AJ will even be the manager. I haven’t heard yet if the appointment of AJ is permanent. According to www.azcentral.com the announcement of AJ’s appointment as manager will happen at a news conference at 3:00 p.m. today.

That sounds like a sweet job, I wonder why he'd want to become a manager and
lose all that control.

perhaps he's only temporaily manager?
although I haven’t read that they’re calliing him an “interim manager”

Sure, he was supplanted as a starter by Ramon Hernandez way back in '99

Gimme a Billy any day!
or a Casey or a Whitey or an Earl!
Hell, if the Rangers throw a Ron on the discard pile, I say we pick him up, discard a bob and yell, ‘Gin!’

Eric Byrnes is just not very good at baseball. That being said, he isn’t this bad, though: .139/.210/.319 (OPS+ = 32). I’m not sure how Byrnes’ suckitude is Melvin’s fault, but of course, the manager always takes the blame (except in Oakland).

I always liked AJ.
But then again, I have a thing for catchers. Ramon made me forget all about AJ after awhile. :)

My few memories of A.J. Hinch
He hit a HR in Boston that cleared the green monster, which I thought was awesome until I found out that lots of players could do it to.
Didn’t he get hit in the face by a foul pop-up?
