Why are the A's in trouble? - Blame the Democrats!!
Not sure if anyone noticed this trend before (sorry if it has been posted before) but our beloved Oakland A's have fared MUCH, MUCH better in the years in which the Republicans have controlled the White House.
1968: Johnson Democrat:Losing season
1969-1976: Nixon and Ford Republican: 8 winning seasons 0 losing seasons (3 World Series)
1977-1980 Carter Democrat 3 horrible losing seasons 1 winning season (1980)
1981- 1992 Reagan and Bush Republican: 6 winning seasons 5 losing 1 year at .500
1993- 2000 Clinton Democrat: 2 winning seasons (99, 00) 6 losing seasons
2001-2008 Bush Republican: 6 winning sesons 2 losing ones.
The transition years were the most striking. In going from Ford to Carter the A's wen from 87 wins (1976) to 63 wins (1977)
Reagan's first year was the best Billy Ball year.
Going from Bush I to Clinton was a huge drop off as well (1992 won AL West) to a horrible 1993.
Anyway. I thought that besides poor managing, weak starting pitching and weaker power hitters we could find another reason as to why we are really struggling this year.
Of course I think its a total coincidence but thought it might distract us from this losing streak.

Dude, I realize it’s a joke and not any serious political argument, but even still, that headline is totally inflammatory. Major CGV.

Clarification
It’s actually an interesting post, and an entertaining observation. I have nothing against the post, but you really must change that headline. It’s just begging for people to come in looking for a political brawl.

Gotta agreed
I was inflamed enough to peek.
In the reverse of this logic, my mother was ecstatic when the Yankees won it all in 1996, as a Republican had been elected President in every year the Yankees had won the World Series since…?1956?? She was sure Clinton was “Doomed!!”
Again, it is small sample size (plus non-reasoning) that ruins this type of logic. But there is so much, way too much illogic floating around the internet right now, blaming Democrats for the current economic crisis. No need to heap it on….

Oh for crying out loud
It’s obviously completely facetious, and it would be less fun without the headline. I suppose I’m one of those who should take offense by your way of thinking, but I don’t at all.

hmm...
…the only way your premise might have merit is if California were a Republican state for the last, say, five decades or so, most likely there wouldn’t be as many environmental reviews and mitigation issues in construction, and maybe the A’s would have their new park by now…

It is a bit of fun. I don’t think anyone is seriously blaming the democrats for the state of the A’s. Some people need to get a sense of humour or not take everything so seriously.

doctorK posts some funny pictures and is being told to “lighten up,” to “get a sense of humour” and to “not take everything so seriously.”
I don’t think anyone’s fundamentally wrong here, but both sides seem to be guilty of some overreaction.

Was there a band in the 60s called The Causation?
Cause them and the Association coulda had some cool shows together.

That would have been cool,
but probably in the “so square it’s groovy” way. (After all, The Association did “Wendy” and “Cherish.”)
Imagine a line-up of The Association, The Free Design, Harpers Bizarre, and The 5th Dimension! All so well-scrubbed yet so very strange and creepy.
BTW I don’t know of a group The Causation, but there is Dave Koz. He’ll have to do.

This is a really well thought out post
its interesting to how you finesse around the CGV with this one, but I have to hand it to you good sir, job well done. You really can’t argue with cold hard data so going along this line of logic, we can only hope for a Republican president in 2012 and a return to winning baseball for the green and gold.

What you are posting are cold, hard facts.
Certainly they are coincidental cold hard facts, but they’re still facts.
Given the current state of the national Republican party, I’m hoping your dataset undergoes some serious regression toward the mean over the next few years! (Can we say that the A’s are “due” to start winning during Democratic administrations?)

I have no problem with the post or the title!
A title is a hook. It’s supposed to draw your interest in! Whether it draws you in because you are intrigued or pissed, it still gets you reading. Then the body is where the point is made. I loled my way through this entire post. Well done!

Agree
I have never minded a little political commentary sprinkled in posts, but this one really doesn’t have any. There’s no praise or criticism of any political party, and humor at the end (which we all need right now).
It reminds me of the quirk, which applied for a while, that the stock market went down in years that an old AFL team won the Super Bowl, and rose when an old NFL team won. Of course, the two events had nothing to do with each other. It was just kind of amusing.
by bear88 on May 8, 2009 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I saw a piece on CNN or FOXNEWS
where when an American graced the cover of the SI, the market tended to go up more than when a foreigner was on the cover. I believe it was the Marisa Miller year (2007 maybe?), so I guess it would’ve worked. Whoever was on the cover in 2008 doomed us (maybe that was Marisa Miller – which would’ve thrown the numbers off)!!!

I never took offense at this post at all. I thought the post was inappropriate not because it is political, but because I thought the title would cause others to respond with politics.

As a member of the Green Party...
…I must object in the strongest terms to the author’s presumption that the fate of the Athletics do not bear a correlative or causative relationship to a Green Administration.
It should be obvious by now that every time the A’s DID NOT bring home a pennant, the Greens WERE NOT in power.
