GOG 2009 #10

First off, my sincere apologies. It was a two game Angels series and I had a lot of work to do, so I figured that it would be cool to post a mini-GOG with only 6 questions and call it a "good mojo GOG". Clearly that backfired.

Star-divide

Now, the slumping A's face the Rangers in another short series at home. Last week's shortened series in Texas sticks in my mind as the spot where this current slide started, so what better way to snap out of than a rematch with Ron Washington's team? Plus, Texas pitching has always been prescribed as a good remedy for offensive incompetence. Of course, the overworked Oakland bullpen can't possibly be looking forward to the prospect of Dan Giese stretching out for a spot start against the Rangers lineup.

Wow, that was four sentences about baseball right there. I honestly didn't think I had it in me.

GOG #10 :: The GOG Is All I Have Left (29 points possible)

Two game series vs Texas Rangers -- May 6-7

Update -- answers added below in bold

  1. Series outcome [3 points] 1-1 split
  2. Dan Giese as a starter :: Predict his IP/K/ER [2 points each] 5.2 IP / 3K / 3 ER
  3. Another outfielder, riding the pine :: Does Copeland play in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] nope, and then he got DFA'd
  4. Does either A's starter throw pitches in the seventh inning? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes, Cahill!
  5. What Cahill needs for success :: How many ground ball outs does Trevor record? [3 points] 10 ground ball outs
  6. What Cahill needs for a big, fat loss :: How many BB does he add to his American League leading total of 18? [3 points] zero walks!
  7. Does Frank Francisco give up his first earned run of the season in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
  8. Pick your poison :: Which Rangers hitter drives in the most runs in the series? [3 points] tie between David Murphy and Chris Davis, 2 RBI each
  9. Among qualified hitters, Marlon Byrd leads in the American League in percentage of pitches that we swings at, with 58.7%. For contrast, Jack Cust swung at 39.2% of pitches so far this year. For this series, does Byrd swing at more or fewer than 58.7% of the pitches he sees? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Byrd swung at 18 of 36 pitches he saw, which is fewer than 58.7%
  10. One of the bright spots of a dark start :: How many Rangers does Bailey strike out in the series? [3 points] 2
  11. 11. In the previous two game series against the Rangers, Bobby Crosby went 4 for 7, but all of his hits were singles. How many base hits does he get this series? Do any of them go for extra bases? [3 points for the first part, +1/-1 for the second part] Crosby got 3 hits (all in game 2) and two of them were doubles (both off of Kris Benson)

Your responses are due by 7:05 pm. I already graded GOG #09, but I don't think you want to look (unless you are gigglingone).

Results

Congratulations to FormerHuntsvilleStar on his victory in this GOG. Sorry that it took so long for me to get the scores posted for this one, but I did a pretty large re-write of my code that compiles scores and I think that I am doing a much better job of tabulating things now. Scroll down and read the paragraph right before the big table for more information about that.

Overall scoring statistics

  • mean = 6.70588 points
  • standard deviation = 3.81011 points
  • mode = 2 points

Your Scores

So there are a couple of big changes to the score tables. First off, you will see that everyone who has participated in even 1 GOG this year is included in the table. The table is still ordered by your score on the most recent GOG (#10, in this case), so all the people who didn't post entries for this GOG are at the bottom of the table and listed as "DNP". But they are still included when calculating the overall points leader and the leader by AVG, so that is better than what I was doing before.

The other new feature is that I am requiring a minimum number of GOG entries for people to place in the AVG category. Otherwise, stabbin mcadams and King Richard would be sharing first place by AVG because they each participated once and scored 10 points that one time. Currently you need to have entered at least 4 GOG to qualify and that number will increase slowly as the season continues. Make sure to marvel at how zaniac75 holds on to 2nd place by AVG while having played all 10 GOG. That's quality AND quantity!

So yeah, that's a summary of all the upgrades going on here in GOG-land. The one downside is that the table is now pretty huge. Maybe at some point I will stop including people who haven't played recently.
