A's demote Eveland; promote Copeland
The A's reinstated outfielder Ben Copeland from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and optioned left-hander Dana Eveland to Triple-A Sacramento.
Not sure why the A's need another OF - maybe trying to find lightning in a bottle.
GRATUITOUS RANDOM ADDED NOTE IN THE HOPES THAT SOMEONE WHO KNOWS BRETT ANDERSON WILL SEE THIS AND PASS IT ON:
Brett, the cure for your blister is aloe vera extracted directly from an aloe vera plant. (I have one in my backyard in Berkeley.) There are few natural "miracle cures" like aloe vera is for cuts, burns, and blisters. Take a stalk, or part of a stalk, from an aloe vera plant and cut it down the middle. What oozes out is a sticky gel-like subtance that you can apply directly to the blister. No bandaid, no drugs. It is amazing stuff. We want you back on the mound soon and for keeps, Brett. Aloe Vera directly from the plant. I'm not kidding. -Nico
The A's optioned ineffective starter Dana Eveland (7.40 ERA) to Sacramento and activated Rule 5 outfielder Ben Copeland from the DL (see roster). There may be another shoe to drop, as it's not immediately apparent who will start in place of Eveland tomorrow. Among the River Cats' starters, Vin Mazzaro or James Simmons could have enough rest.
Not sure that Simmons is ready - Mazzaro got roughed up a bit on his last start, but overall has been decent. Jerome Williams is a possibility as he was just activated by Sacramento.

Holy crap, that's awesome!
We could win tomorrow. (Assuming someone pitches.) I predict that the axe falls on Rajai Davis, as a starting pitcher is called up for Wednesday’s game.

One disappointment, though - Copeland is left-handed
and the A’s need all the help against LHP they can get. Why Copeland and not Denorfia? (So we don’t risk losing Copeland? How about risking that the A’s might actually get a few hits against LHP.

Copeland is a Rule 5 guy
if he’s not disabled anymore, then he has to be on the A’s 25 man roster or the other club can have him back.
he can be on a rehab assignment for 20 days, correct me if i'm wrong

Thank God
Eveland sent down.
Only 4 starts too late.
Good news.
Now they need another starter. I guess Mazarro was lit up last time but Simmons appears to have been lit up quite a few times. No brainer IMO. Mazarro since they already have the youth movement.
Didn't we learn from Anderson/Cahill?
Or do we want to just rush and possibly kill all three of MAC + Simmons?
Gio or Gallagher are who should be starting. Gio can’t be called back up. Gallagher doesn’t have enough rest. That leaves a spot starter. The possibilities are Jerome Williams, EGon, and Giese.

It'll be Dan Giese.
He’s right on rotation given his long relief stint on Friday.

Yeah, I think Davis is placed on waivers, but will probably clear them this time.
We’ll see how long Copeland lasts on the 25-man. My guess is if he doesn’t prove he belongs quickly, then he will be offered back and Norf will (hopefully) get the call.
But he loves his hair.

Ok, I apologize if this is a really stupid question
but just because the A’s activated Copeland from the DL, does this necessarily mean he’s getting called up to Oakland? Wasn’t he on the Sac roster to begin with?
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
he's on the 25-man roster according to the link above

Wow.
I love having Eveland gone, although I sure am confused about how the rotation is going to work. It must be Dan Giese that’s going to get the start. Thus, the rotation temporarily becomes:
Braden
Giese
Cahill
Outman
Anderson (or Gio, if Anderson is skipped)
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
LOL
The more I think about it, the more I bet that Giese really does get the spot start, Gio takes Anderson’s place next time, and Anderson takes Giese’s spot the next time around so he can have a couple more days for his booboo.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
Never mind
I forgot Gio got sent down. Swap out Gallagher for Gio, but the same idea.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
Exactly - Gallagher takes Anderson's spot if someone has to
It lines up that way. Gio can’t take anyone’s spot until Monday anyway, so maybe he takes Eveland’s spot after one emergency spot-start by someone incapable of getting major league hitters out (see vignette17’s inspired list above).

alaska A residing in colorado. (soon in Idaho)
This move is confusing
The only guys who can reasonably be expected to pitch better than Eveland (Gio, Gallagher) have pitched in long relief lately and won’t be able to start tomorrow. That means the A’s are either gonna go with Mazzaro or Simmons (yay, let’s rush more prospects!), E. Gon or Jerome Williams or Giese (all of whom are arguably worse than Eveland). Unless the A’s somehow find lightning in a bottle, this move smacks of desperation and is more “let’s make a change for the sake of making a change” than “let’s make a change to improve the team.”
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Playoffs here we come.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Can't argue with you there
I’m no fan of Eveland, but if the alternatives are E. Gon, known-Jerome, or Polter-Giese, you’re not actually gaining anything to shelf Eveland. By his next scheduled start, Gio is eligible to return and Gallagher’s good to go. I don’t really get the purpose of this, other than to lose a reliever now because he’s starting.

The bottom line.....
is that this team absolutely sucks in every facet of the game with the exception of their bullpen. 100++ losses on the horizon. Keep trading established stars (see Haren, etc.) for prospects (see suspects), oh that’s right, there are no more established stars left.
