Gio and Patterson sent back to AAA
It's also on the A's transactions page
(I noticed someone mentioned this in the DLD but without a link, also there is so much other stuff in the DLD that I thought it was worth creating a FanPost in case anyone wants to discuss this move (not that anyone discusses A's moves here, right?)
So Blevins ( who doesn't seemed to have overwhelmed anyone at Sacramento either ) and Gallagher (who hasn't come close to getting stretched out yet) are called back to Oakland, while Gio -- who pitched his heart out, and we hope not his arm out -- goes back along with Patterson (can't argue against that move).
Of course the A's pen is very, very used at the moment. Is Gallagher being brought up for the bullpen? Will he actually get used this time? Will Blevins somehow be better this time?

I agree
Patterson’s only edge is his supposedly superior hitting and a small speed advantage (though they both are quick fellows). Since we haven’t seen Patterson hit up here yet, it’s a wash. Petit has better positional flexibility for what we need right now (3B, 2B, emergency SS) and has better defense at all of those positions. I’d rather give Patterson regular AB’s at AAA than up with the big club where he’ll probably get jerked around. And if there’s anyone who should be used to getting their playing time jerked around by now, it’s Petit.

Gallagher’s back, huh? Well, he was only throwing about 35 to 40 pitches in Triple-A, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him take Eveland’s spot in the rotation. We should’ve sent Eveland down to Triple-A.

Can't
He’s gotta clear through waivers first, right?

No
He was only down for 18 days last year and it takes 20 to burn an option.

Sending Gio down is actually a good move
because he’s not available for the next 3-4 days anyway. This is exactly what the A’s need to be doing: send down guys who just pitched a lot of innings, call up a fresh arm, call Gio back up in 10 days. My hope is that Gio makes a start for Sacramento in 5 days, then is called up to make a start for Oakland 5 days later.

I like this idea.
And hopefully he’ll pitch well enough in his next start for Oak that they’ll move him into the rotation more permanently.

what's the odds the in 10 days or so that our rotation ends up being
Braden, Anderson, Gallagher, Outman, Gio?
Actually, that might do a tick better than what’ve been running out there for the last month.

exactly what i was thinking
What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

G's Melons is right
Options are 1 per year. When Gio got sent down after being called up, that used up an option. When Gallagher was sent down earlier, that used up an option. Neither of them will use up another option for the rest of the year, no matter how many times they take the train between Sacto and Oakland.

I thought he was referring to Eveland, who hasn't used one this year
Not that I would personally hesitate to send him down for that reason, but it would burn an option, correct?

Only if he was down for more than 20 days this year.

20 days? I was hoping for 20 years, just to be on the safe side

Make 'em ride the Capitol Corridor!
Nico just posted what I was going to say (GET OUT OF MY MIND!). Let’s hope at the end of the week that Eveland goes back north and Gio returns to us (hopefully intact after being crucified sacrificed over-used asked to take one for the team).

in and out of SMF (Sacramento) will be used often again this year. (Sigh)

Hm
I like these moves actually. I thought it was silly to send down Blevins because of a bad spring and a few bad performances. With few exceptions, jobs shouldn’t be won and lost in spring training.
Hopefully we’ll see more of Gallagher. I just don’t see any evidence that Cahill is ready to pitch in a big league rotation. If we don’t send him down, I’d rather have Cahill in the ’pen and Gallagher in the rotation, as then Cahill can just throw his sinker and maybe a four-seamer and not worry about commanding his other pitches.
Also, why is Rajai still on this club? I know he’s out of options if we DFA him, but there are fifteen players just like him roaming around the minor leagues. He’s a fielding/base running specialist who’s a mediocre fielder and base runner. Denorfia’s been struggling at AAA but look at his ML numbers. He’s more than adequate as a backup outfielder.

Geren was probably still mad about Gio’s “This is what Bob wants, so this is what Bob gets” comment.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question
but, having come up for just a couple of days, does this count as using up one of Gio’s options?

Options don't work that way
We’re using one of his options this year by sending him down, but now we can send him up and down as much as we want and we’ll still only be using one option. More information Here

good to know.
This makes sense, then assuming that he comes back up at some stage. which doesn’t seem unlikely
