Don't look at me; it wouldn't have mattered if I gave up two runs.

Don't look at me; it wouldn't have mattered if I gave up two runs.

The first inning should tell you all you need to know about the A's offense. It is nearly impossible to receive three walks and follow that up with a double and manage to only score a single run, but that's just what the A's did. And what was a promising start to the game was immediately snuffed out.

Luckily, it wouldn't matter. Here's the A's pitching line:

Anderson: 4 IP, 8H, 6ER
Cameron: 2 IP, 4H, 4ER
Springer: 1 IP, 3H, 3ER
Bailey: 1 IP, 2H, 1ER

I have nothing else to say. When your pitching allows 14 runs, and your offense manages five hits, you aren't going to win.

He got lit up tonight legitimately, but it happens – hitter’s park, hitting team, didn’t have his good fastball for whatever reason. He’s going to be very, very good (if he stays healthy).

I want to say to the people and to the moneyed elites...

that until the A’s win five games in a row, get out of last place, or fire Bob Geren, whichever comes first, I will not attend any games, buy any licensed products, or any products of any sponsor who sponsors Athletics baseball on any medium. I will seriously consider ceasing to wear my Athletics gear, although this would involve having to buy and or wash other shirts, so maybe my lazy ass will renege on that last part…

Long story short…

No wins for me, no cash for you…
No new manager for me, no soup for you…

so

Is the clock ticking? I give it until Monday, and drop the hammer, because you gotta do something if you’re gonna have a shred of credibility left as an organization, or demonstrate that you even want one.

If this manager keeps his job for 72 more hours, and if the team continues to retain players that are so out of it that even a 3 year old child could see that there need to be revisions made, then Billy Beane or David Forst or Tyrone Biggums or whatever crackhead is calling the shots is basically saying to all of us that he doesn’t want us and that their intention as an organization is to tank the product so profoundly that they can then just slip away to wherever in their twisted, phony-wealth-and-power addled brains they think is gonna want a team in this kind of pathetically sad condition at every single layer of the onion from the product on the field to the advertising to the venue to the farm system to the training staff and back again.

If this continues they are making a statement that they can do whatever they want, that Selig is perfectly & exquisitely in on it, and at that point there needs to be a movement for justice to sweep them out of town and the fuck back to San Diego or San Jose or wherever they came from, because they are doing this right to all of our faces and we need to decide if we’re gonna take it.

The future of the team in Oakland, San Jose, the Moon, or anywhere else may hang in the balance if this keeps going, and if they can’t move they may contract the franchise if the alleged management isn’t even going to make a pretense of an effort to do anything but crash and burn the whole thing like this.

It hurts profoundly to say this, and a part of me cannot believe it has come to this, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that this franchise is a disgrace to the sport now.

Bud Selig is wide awake

and in collusion with his former fraternity brother, whom he has know since he was 19 years old, to destroy this franchise if they cannot get their way and move it. What they don’t seem to realize is that the economy is such that no one in SJ or really anywhere else is gonna part with the resources to build a dream facility for a franchise that is by all accounts a complete shambles from top to bottom; maybe in bull market times but not nowadays. Notice in the Fremont thing that Cisco Field wasn’t really about the A’s, it was about pulling Cisco Systems out of the shitter and was pretty much slated to be their Fantasy Computer Device Fun Palace with the Athletics as sort of the house band to draw unsuspecting people in to be persuaded to perform their holy rituals of Consumption, the real religion of Earth..

further, given his complicity

in the owner-collusion salary issue and his allowing 94% of the players in the game to be juiced to the gills so the sport would make short-term money, I think it safe to say that if Kenesaw Mountain Landis were alive today, Bud Selig wouldn’t be.

And that’s now, my pretties. Wait patiently for 10-15 years from now, when all these players we have watched are all dead or dying from what they did to their bodies, when the Alzado-Caminiti body count starts to rise and it was all on this soulless bastard’s watch.

+1 Emperor

This franchise is a disgrace to the sport.

by Trainman on May 30, 2009 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You make good points

Although I don’t see how moving an unwatchable team to San Jose would necessarily cause a lot of excitement in the new venue. And while contracting the franchise would entail a significant payoff to the ownership group – including Beane – I’m not sure why that option would interest them, either. An MLB franchise is a valuable thing in the long term.

The advertising IS terrible. Notice how they’ve stopped running the inane, “We’re bringing the band back together” ad (the “band” is as old as Dylan, and not as good) as well as that beef—-brawn crap. Having a lineup full of .200 hitters sort of invalidates the advertising for the season.

by coffee roaster on May 30, 2009 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

indeed

As does hanging a three-story poster of a player that will likely never play again, and whose recent story is fraught with injury and sadness, in your venue. When I look at the ads, which were once upon a time so good that you would wait for them to come on TV between innings, I see something done so unprofessionally that such a thing would simply not be tolerated in any organization with a modicum of credibility.

If it were just the 14-1 losses day after day, I’d be cool, the pitchers are young, some of these guys are old, the foul territory’s killing Holliday and he probably played this weekend in Texas wishing he could hit again in a park where the ball carries, well then I’d be unhappy but philosophical.

But when you add everything else, the perennial injury issues that get worse and worse year after year, the unintentionally self-mocking ads and venue signage, the weak hitting in the farm system when you’d think they’d be after developing a future 3B or CF (Jemile Weeks is nice, but the Mayan calendar will likely end before he ever makes the bigs), the ridiculous carpetbaggery going on around moving the team to nobody-knows-where, then it begins to take an ugly, ugly shape and like you said, NO city is gonna want a team in this condition, with a philosophy that says you can only swing once a night and the rest of the time you’re actively trying to walk… after the initial novelty of the place wears off, they’ll have 12 people a night just like now.

re:contraction

never, ever forget that that’s where all this shit started, years ago when Selig came out here, came to the Coliseum and put it in Schott’s head that it was move or be contracted; I remember reading about that meeting and seeing it on TV, where he was at the game and they were talking about it on the KCBS radio sportscast that night, that the A’s (and the Minnesota Twins as well, at that point) were playing in facilities that were unacceptable and that it could not continue.

fired up

Well emperor I know your fired up about this and I agree with some of what you say as I’ve railed against Lew Wolff and John Fisher on more than one occasion but I guess I just can’t believe that the A’s are losing on purpose. Maybe I’m naive but I just think a lot of the moves Beane has tried the last couple of years haven’t worked out yet and the team stinks.

I still have hope but and hey it could be worse we could all be Pirates fans, I mean at least the A’s have been mostly competitive over the last decade.

not losing on purpose, per se

But allowing losing and mismanagement as an option, so the malaise looks like natural causes and consent can be manufactured in the form of the apathy needed for them to have the justification they think they need to move away and not be vilified for all times in the East Bay for it.

Hey, I just bought the team from Lew Wolff... who wants to play third?

I just heard Buan

saying the blame has to be shared with Geren and the front office.

Most honest thing he has ever said.

Front office = Billy Beane which = DGAF (Doesn’t give a fuck)

Maybe, I'm subject to selective bias or something...

but to me, it seems like 90% of your posts are hyperbolic, erroneous assertions like:

Front office = Billy Beane which = DGAF (Doesn’t give a fuck)

which really have no basis or evidence and adds nothing constructive to the discussion at all. So honest question: are comments like these all you’re capable of producing? If so, then I’ll gladly start ignoring everything you post.

OK

If he gives a damn then why is he not firing Geren and trying to make the team better. I think it is showing a level of incompetence to just sit there and watch this team implode without there being consequences. Yeah, I get negative because I want this team to win and I don’t think that Beane is attempting to help this team in the interim.

This really is a bad team and I have a hard time believing that he cannot make a few moves and a firing or two to make this team at least watchable.

DFA Rajai Davis and Hannahan

I don’t follow the minors but there has to be a couple of players down there than have to be better than these 2.

Put Springer on DL

Fire Geren. I would be happy with this alone but I do not see the point of having bad players on the team. Hannahan has killed this team for at least the chance of a couple of wins in the last week with his performace at the plate. Everyone loves his defense but it is like having a 7 man lineup with him and Davis in there.

by Trainman on May 30, 2009 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't really know how those things will make the team that much better

Firing Geren I’m with. Getting rid of Davis I’m with. Hannahan’s only up here because others better than him can’t stay healthy. Springer has nothing at this point. But right now I don’t have any faith in their replacements doing that much better, certainly not to the point that the team will start winning games. Those players aren’t the reason the team is bad. You’re suggesting doing something about three of the worst on the team when others much better than them need to play better.

Neither Hannahan nor Davis started tonight's game.

There are no centerfielders on the 40 man roster besides Davis and Sweeney. Petit should give you an idea of what’s there to take over for Hannahan.

But yeah, I wouldn’t mind putting Springer on the DL and giving Gray/Schroder/Kilby a better look.

I imagine that Billy will be drafting a 3rd baseman with his 1st pick

or trading Holliday and some good pitching for a good 3rd baseman.

by Trainman on May 30, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are no 3B who are going to fall to the A's in the first round.

Green will go in the top ten, and Borchering – the next best thing – would be a total over draft.

The point is, most of the ideas you propose either involve acquisitions/minor leaguers that aren’t gonna happen/don’t exist, or they involve firing people, which could actually make the team worse. If it was as easy as not “having bad players on the team” the A’s would have done something.

by scromulus on May 30, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are making three baseless assumptions.

One, that Beane doesn’t care about making the team better.

Two, that firing Bob Geren will make a difference. It won’t. This team has more pertinent problems than the manager.

Three, that acquiring better players (“making the team better”) is quick and easy to do.

good post

I am as much a whiner as the next grandstander, but I’m not going to write “stuff” as if the answer to the problems are easily, obviously done. Trainman, you’ve said what you feel a few times, and we all understand your POV. But as Tripp points out, the evidence that certain actions will beget certain effects just isn’t there.

Sure, jump up and down, again and again, but the pie is burnt, it can’t be eaten, and getting more and more upset won’t fix it.

Me, myself, I’ve simply stopped watching games, and do not plan to attend further games in 2009. Not much more to it. Garciaparra’s hurt, Duchscherer may be out all year, Giambi just cannot produce, and Holliday does not fit this lineup. Pitching is too erratic, too young.

I think it would kinda stink

to be preternaturally talented at baseball, yet not to have a lot of passion for it.

I would rather be Bobby Scales, hustling and hoping through a decade in the minors, just praying for a cup of coffee, than be stuck being Matt Holliday or Adam Dunn, who can hit the ball a ton, but would rather be doing something else entirely.

Especially after he basically lobbied to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and talked so highly of the experience, loving being a part of it. Definitely sounds like someone who’s not all that interested in baseball.
