GOG 2009 #17
The A's head down to Texas to take care of some unfinished business, specifically that game that got rained out back in April. As much as I may have complained about the weather ruining my finely crafted GOG, I have to say that I do love the double headers. Not that I'll be able to watch the game, 'cause I'll be at work, but...
Ok, never mind. The main thing is that the A's have a four game chance to start turning things around in the AL West. Will this weekend mark the turning point of the entire 2009 season? Eh, probably not, but I still don't think this Texas team is all that intimidating, particularly as they have begun to slip down the rankings for team runs scored. Oakland pitching has been hot lately, but is it as hot as the hitting in Arlington?

GOG #17 :: A Doubleheader Means An Extra Chance To Lose! (32 points possible)
Four game series @ Texas Rangers -- May 29-31
Update: answers, courtesy of doctorK, have been added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 3-1 TEX
- Doubleheader predictions :: In which doubleheader game do the A's score the most runs? In which doubleheader game do the A's allow the fewest runs? Do either of the doubleheader games go to extra innings? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] A's score the most in game 1, allow the fewest runs in game 2, and neither game goes into extra innings
- Does Outman continue his hot streak? Predict his IP/ER/K [2 points each] 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 9K(!!!)
- Do the A's finally tag Frank Francisco with his first earned run of the season? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes, thanks to Adam Kennedy
- How many innings does Jeff Gray pitch in the series? [3 points] 0.1 innings
- Now that Crosby hit a home run, the only player left on the active roster who hasn't gone deep this season is Rajai Davis. It would be way too easy of a question if I was to ask whether Davis is going to hit a home run, so instead the question is: Does Rajai get a hit in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no hits for Rajai
- Josh Hamilton is back in the lineup for the Rangers. Predict his H/HR/K [2 points each] 3 H, 0 HR, 4K
- Looking past his mediocre ERA, Brett Anderson's batted ball statistics have been fantastic so far. In particular, he has the lowest line drive percentage of any A's starter (10.7%). How many line drives do the Rangers hit off him? [3 points] Fangraphs said 4 line drives, but baseball-reference said 3, so I gave points for either of those two answers
- How many bunts do the A's attempt in the series, counting both sacrifice bunts and bunting for a base hit? [3 points] zip, zero, zilch
- Arlington launching pad :: How many home runs hit by both teams in the series? [3 points] 10 home runs
Remember, the series starts early on Friday (2:05 pacific), so don't wait around until after work. Post your answers now!
Results
Um... sorry that these results are being posted like three weeks late. Also, maybe I should apologize for writing hard questions, because scores were pretty low this time. Finally, let's get a final helping of "I'm sorry" from the Texas Rangers, for beating the crap out of the A's.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 5.03226 points
- standard deviation = 2.56234 points

1. Series outcome [3 points] Oakland, 3-1
2. Doubleheader predictions :: In which doubleheader game do the A’s score the most runs? In which doubleheader game do the A’s allow the fewest runs? Do either of the doubleheader games go to extra innings? 1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] First/First/No
3. Does Outman continue his hot streak? Predict his IP/ER/K [2 points each] 6/2/6
4. Do the A’s finally tag Frank Francisco with his first earned run of the season? [1 if right, -1 if wrong] No
5. How many innings does Jeff Gray pitch in the series? [3 points] 2
6. Now that Crosby hit a home run, the only player left on the active roster who hasn’t gone deep this season is Rajai Davis. It would be way too easy of a question if I was to ask whether Davis is going to hit a home run, so instead the question is: Does Rajai get a hit in this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] No
7. Josh Hamilton is back in the lineup for the Rangers. Predict his H/HR/K [2 points each] 4/1/4
8. Looking past his mediocre ERA, Brett Anderson’s batted ball statistics have been fantastic so far. In particular, he has the lowest line drive percentage of any A’s starter (10.7%). How many line drives do the Rangers hit off him? [3 points] 2
9. How many bunts do the A’s attempt in the series, counting both sacrifice bunts and bunting for a base hit? [3 points] 4
10. Arlington launching pad :: How many home runs hit by both teams in the series? [3 points] 9

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

the bunt question
I was going to go with just counting when a ball was put into play on a bunt. So faking bunt doesn’t count and neither do foul bunts (unless it is a foul bunt popped up for an out, or a foul bunt strike 3 or something). Basically, just things that show up in the play log as bunts.

Answers
Again, colin, feel free to correct these, although I’m pretty sure they’re right.
1. 3-1 Texas
2. A’s scored most in Game 1, yielded least runs in Game 2, no extra innings (thank God).
3. Outman: 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 9 K
4. Yes, AK’s game-winner today.
5. Gray: 1/3 IP, then back to the minors.
6. No hits for Rajai (did Geren really pinch-hit Davis for Holliday?)
7. Hamilton: 3 H, 0 HR, 4 K
8. From fangraphs, there were 4 line drives given up by Anderson.
9. Looks to me like 0 bunts were attempted.
10. 10 HR (4 in Game 1, 0 in Game 2, 3 in Game 3, 3 in Game 4).

GOG summer break
Unfortunately, I’m going to have to suspend the GOG for the next week approximately. A combination of moving to a new apartment, not having internet hooked up yet, and leaving tomorrow for a short vacation means that I just don’t have the time to put a set of questions together (but I hopefully do have time to go out and see the A’s play tonight!).
I’m going to try to get a GOG posted in time for the series starting next Monday against Minnesota. In the mean time, have a fun week. Go A’s!

I'm on it (at least for this series)
I’ll even score the results.
