Prospectus Status - May 28th
Its been almost a month since the last Prospectus Status, and since it is an off day for the big club, I thought it would be a nice time to check up on how our prospects are doing right about now.
With Draft Day coming up quickly on June 9th, we will probably have a new Mid-Season Prospect List project after the draft. Because its mid season, we will not do it as we did in the off season, 1 at a time, but more likely in large groups, perhaps 10 at a time, averaging the results.
Pitcher of the Month for May:
[SC] [FG] Vin Mazzaro, RHP
| 2009 Stats | G | W-L | ERA | IP | H | BB | K | SV | WHIP | |
| SAC (oak) | AAA | 10 | 2-2 | 2.38 | 56.2 | 42 | 17 | 44 | 0 | 1.04 |
Mazzaro has been awesome in May, with a 1.65 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and holding batters to a .149 batting average. Mazzaro could be called up soon, perhaps in the double header against Texas. But, there is also just as likely a chance that the A's keep him there all year, as he would have to be added to the 40 man roster, and as we have seen a number of the A's top pitching prospects struggle in the majors with out enough experience at AAA (ie; Cahill and Anderson).
Hitter for the Month of May:
[SC] [FG] Corey Brown, CF
| 2009 Stats | G | Bavg | OBP | SLG | HR | RBI | SB | R | 2B | |
| MID (oak) | AA | 29 | .339 | .426 | .616 | 5 | 25 | 3 | 21 | 12 |
Brown hit .337/.415/.675 in the month of may after coming back from injury. I would not be supprised if Brown got promoted to Sacramento soon, along with Adrian Cardenas, who could very well get promoted back to Sacramento after his demotion, as Cardenas as also continued to tear up Midland.
Onto the list.

Do only replies work?
It’s getting to the point where I get nearly as excited for the Midland boxscore as the A’s’.
Cardenas, Brown, Carter, Donaldson, Spencer, Sulentic. When was the last time the A’s had 6 actual hitting prospects on the same team? Of course, by the end of the year, most could join Cunningham, Doolittle and Barton or Weeks could join those still in AA.
By the end of the year what will happen to the AAAAs? They could have a whole lineup of them:
Patterson 2b
Petit SS
Baisley 1b
Putnam LF
Carson DH
Munson C
Wimberly CF
Pennington 3b

my goodness!
Mazzaro and Corey Brown look like two pretty damned good ball players. These other guys on the A’s better start stepping it up or they will be looking for work soon. nice post Zonis.

Grant Green Grant Green Grant Green Grant Green
I have a feeling the A’s will take one of the pitchers who falls but I definitely prefer Green (please please please fall) or Matt Davidson (a bit of a reach but a 3b with a ton of power). Most importantly, I really hope the A’s choose who they think is BPA.

You mean going against the tradition of A's first round picks of picking the safest bet to sign?

Of course
A number of questions have come up about Green: lack of power, defense. I think it’s a case of draftitus. He was pressing too much at the beginning of the year. He was the consensus #2 pick at the start of the year and was called a Tulowitski-Longoria hybrid. If he didn’t have some questions he wouldn’t be available at 13.
I think he’s worth taking the risk on.

Thats fair,
Ive read that he will not hit well enough to be an above average player at third base and with the plethora of seemingly impact arms and possibly Wheeler available for the A’s pick, Im not sure Green would be the best option. That being said I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed with a Green pick if he falls that far.

Someone will fall into the A's lap at 13
Whether it’s Grant Green, Alex White, Tyler Matzek (looking more and more doubtful), or even Tanner Scheppers remains to be seen. But I think you just wait to see how the first 12 picks shake out and then take the BPA. This draft is wide open after Strasburg and Ackley.

Before last year I would argue this point
The Weeks pick kinda changes that. Sure, the A’s didn’t take Porcello, but a bunch of teams didn’t. Since 2002-2003 the A’s have gone around slot, which is better than the Matt Bush route. Combine that with no supplemental picks and no second rounder and Ynoa, Leon, Rosario, Hunter, etc I wouldn’t be surprised for the A’s to go over slot.
If the A’s got Green and Sano, I would be one happy camper. On another note, there’s a rumor that the A’s might take Tate. That pick would certainly be interesting if nothing else.

I wouldn't even argue the Weeks pick
Weeks has the potential to turn into an above average 2b or CF both of which are +2.5 runs in positional value and 1b which is -12.5 runs. So essentially if you believe that Wallace can’t stick at third, which was and still is a very common belief, then you have to believe that Wallace is going to be more than 15 runs more valuable with the bat than Weeks will be (assuming both are average fielders at either CF or 2b for Weeks and 1b for Wallace). Im not sure if I believe that, enough that I am not going to question the pick was or wasn’t BPA.

by Tripp on May 30, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Defensively I think the chances are fair to good.
The chance that he becomes a league average hitter are fair. He could be a metal bat phenomena but I think he will wind up producing.

To each his own.
I’ll admit that I’ve never been much of a fan of Weeks and I would absolutely take Wallace over him both now and at the time of the draft. Although I’ll freely admit my bias against Weeks probably stems from the first scouting report I read about him which basically stated that he was like his brother but worse (and of course, Rickie Weeks isn’t that good).
One minor quibble though. What makes you think his chances of being an above average defensive 2B are “fair to good” when most reports had him pegged as possibly not being able to even stick at 2B?
by Tripp on May 31, 2009 2:50 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thats fair.
From what I have read he seems to have different tools than his brother. Im not sure what I would have done with the pick Ethan Martain and Aaron Hicks along with Walace and Weeks would have been in consideration for my pick at the time. I had not seen any of them or read anything more than Minorleagueball and sometimes PG crosschecker and BA when their stuff is free.
He has the tools to be league average 2bman and the tools to be a league average CFer. I think hell be able to make at least one work.
