GOG 2009 #16
Happy Memorial Day! Hopefully you are all planning some fun activity for your Monday off (like going to the A's game!) but hopefully, while you are still crawling out of bed, you'll log in to AN and post an entry for this GOG. 'Cause otherwise no one will ever catch zaniac75.
Now, I can imagine that some people might not be too excited about another series against the Mariners. Not only is this already the third meeting between Oakland and Seattle, but the two previous series have been pretty much complete disasters, with a soul-crushing mixture of horrible hitting, untimely pitching, and extra inning losses. Hell, I'm even getting sick of writing GOG questions about the Mariners, but the season must go on!

- Probable pitchers
- Mariners stats
- I still haven't graded GOGs #14 or #15, but I have excuses! I ran a race, and I'm moving, and the dog ate my homework.
GOG #16 :: Not These Guys Again! (33 points possible)
Three game series vs Seattle Mariners -- May 25-27
Update -- answers, courtesy of doctorK, are included below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 OAK
- Back on April 12, Erik Bedard pitched 8.1 innings against Oakland, striking out 7, and allowing zero earned runs. Predict his line for this series, IP/K/ER [2 points each] 6.2 IP, 5 K, 1 ER
- In the last two Mariner GOGs, we've matched up Eric vs Endy Chavez and Kurt vs Ichiro Suzuki. For this series, contemplate how many players on these two teams share last names, and then tell me who will have more RBI for the series, Ryan or Mike Sweeney. [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Mike Sweeney
- The Mariners hitters have walked fewer times than any team in the American League. How many free passes do they receive from Oakland pitchers? [3 points] 5 base-on-balls
- Good Cahill or Bad Cahill? Does Trevor last more than 5 innings? Does he allow fewer than 4 earned runs? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] yes and yes -- good Cahill! (but he got a loss anyway)
- I almost forgot about Craig Breslow :: How many innings does he throw in this series? [3 points] 1.2 IP
- Predict which starting pitcher (on either team) has the best game score of the series [3 points] Bedard
- Which Athletic hits the most home runs in this series? [3 points] tie between Crosby and Buck
- Adam Kennedy, probably the next player to hit .400, right? Predict his AB/H/RBI [2 points each] 12 AB, 4 H, 2 RBI
- What is the run differential for the series? (i.e. Oakland +10 runs or something like that) [3 points] Oakland +1
Ok, we're still like 5 hours before the first pitch of the series (courtesy of Brett Anderson). Plenty of time to post your answers and then haul the grill down to the Coliseum for some tailgating. Me, I'll be here in Chicago, packing stuff into boxes.
Results
Very low turnout, probably because this fANpost was published on a Monday holiday. The scores were all over the place, with a big flat distribution.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 9.10000 points
- standard deviation = 4.33954 points
- mode = 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, or 16 points
Your Scores
The title for this round is split between doctorK and roscoe. I'm thinking that I should also add a new ranking category, based on how many GOG each player has won (and mabye some lesser number of points for second and third place finishes). I think that doctorK might be doing pretty well in that category, since he has a few GOG wins, despite being a ways back in the overall points category.
Also, a tough round for zaniac75. He is still in control of 1st place by overall points, but he was just overtaken by pam5981 who just squeaks in at the threshhold for eligibility.

game score
I probably should have been more explicit about this, but in the description of question 7 above, clicking on the game score link will take you to a description of the game score stat. So it’s not actually what the score of the game is (which is what it sounds like from your response). Instead, game score is a stat invented by Bill James that attempts to quantify in one number all the good and bad things that at pitcher did in the game (think something like QB rating, but for pitchers).

the problem is that series always start on work days, so I'm always ok
except this time.

I missed so many GOGs now
I’ve lost track. After being in the top 5 for the begining I don’t think I will ever be in the top 10 again because I can’t remember to come post before the game starts.

just a few people
have kept up with entering every GOG
I have an unstoppable advantage in this category, of course…

I'm not going to give up though
I will try to keep playing. Maybe I can get my avg up.

Here are the results
(colin, feel free to correct these if I bungle something)
1. Series outcome [3 points] A’s 2, M’s 1
2. Back on April 12, Erik Bedard pitched 8.1 innings against Oakland, striking out 7, and allowing zero earned runs. Predict his line for this series, IP/K/ER [2 points each] 6 2/3 IP, 5 K, 1 ER
3. In the last two Mariner GOGs, we’ve matched up Eric vs Endy Chavez and Kurt vs Ichiro Suzuki. For this series, contemplate how many players on these two teams share last names, and then tell me who will have more RBI for the series, Ryan or Mike Sweeney. 1 if right, -1 if wrong] Mike had one RBI before the face plant, which is still one more than Ryan had.
4. The Mariners hitters have walked fewer times than any team in the American League. How many free passes do they receive from Oakland pitchers? [3 points] 5 BB
5. Good Cahill or Bad Cahill? Does Trevor last more than 5 innings? Does he allow fewer than 4 earned runs? [1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Cahill today: 6 IP, 2 ER
6. I almost forgot about Craig Breslow :: How many innings does he throw in this series? [3 points] 1 2/3 IP
7. Predict which starting pitcher (on either team) has the best game score of the series [3 points] Bedard edged out Washburn, 64 to 63
8. Which Athletic hits the most home runs in this series? [3 points] Trick question, since the A’s don’t hit HRs, but the answer is Buck or Crosby (yeah, like anybody was going to pick those guys).
9. Adam Kennedy, probably the next player to hit .400, right? Predict his AB/H/RBI [2 points each] 12 AB/4 H/ 2 RBI. All of the hits and RBIs were in the first game.
10. What is the run differential for the series? (i.e. Oakland +10 runs or something like that) [3 points] Oakland +1

awesome
Between work and moving to a new apartment, I have been pretty pressed for time lately. I promise to get some grades up tomorrow — for this series and the last two (or is it three?) as well.
