brief update on KTRB issues
Following up on an earlier post, I just wanted to let you know that I have been told by someone in the A's organization that they have been working actively with KTRB to resolve the problem of poor reception and other issues. This is described as a "work in progress", which of course is very frustrating for us fans but also for them. I didn't mean to imply in my earlier post that there was a lack of effort on the part of the station or of the A's to improve the situation.

couldn't hear it at all in Oakland
a couple of times this week (not just broadcast with static; there was nothing)
came in fine in Stockton Friday (along with 970 and 1410? AM)

hopefully this gets resolved with the new transmitter
which is supposed to be up and running sometime this summer.

When there is no game on, 860 AM, as received in Berkeley
is one big static mess. It’s bad when it’s gametime and they’re broadcasting, but accidentally turn it on other times, and it’s simply, “bbbrrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzchchchchchbrrrrrrrrxxxzzzzzzzzzzz”.

Thanks for the update....
HOWEVER, if the A’s had a decent PR operation they would be out in front of this and be telling their fans that 1) there was a problem and 2) that they were working on the problem. They would not wait for complaints and then rely on said complainant disseminating this information to the rest of their fan base. It angers me that the A’s are so poorly run on a business side.

That's a very good point.

What really blows me away
Is that there was apparently no fucking TESTING done.
You know, have one of the A’s flunkies drive all over the bay area while listening to 860am, just to, I dunno, find out if there would be any issues
Like, before the season maybe?

and they have frequent interference even during the game
and even when the listener is at the game!
(and no, it was never that bad with 610 or 1050…I never had a problem with interference or static when listening at games.)

There is also a delay
of 4-5 seconds when I’m at the game, which is not that bad when they’re calling balls and strikes but truly annoying when a ball is put in play. To the point that I am listening much less this season than ever before.
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.

cant remember if it was Sunday or Monday, but
most of the entire pre-game show was off the air for awhile at my place in Rockridge. I had reception issues before, but having moved my radio around in the room, I found a decent spot for it, albeit not ideal.
But completely losing the broadcast isn’t acceptable. Before the dawn of Internet age, stations used to pay engineers to stay near the base of transmitters and master controls to avoid these things. I can tell you that they do not do this any more.

I'm tellin' ya...
…Schott/Hoffman, while not ideal, are looking pretty good in comparison.
I could prove God statistically. Take the human body alone - the chances that all the functions of an individual would just happen is a statistical monstrosity.

one year, our English broadcast was on an all Spanish-language channel.
That was during the Schott/Hoffman era, IIRC.
My first thought...ESPN.com still has free content?
My second… you still read ESPN.com? -grover

I can just hear
Bill King having a lot of fun with that.

leo i can tell by your tag that you're crazy
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

Dealing with the FCC takes a while
I’m glad they’re working on it.
I felt so lucky to be in the car (where I can receive KTRB, though not well) just now when Marty Lurie and Bruce Magowan were playing great calls of legendary broadcasters. I had never heard Bill King’s call of A Certain Home Run in the 1988 World Series — I’ve only seen the awful TV clip about eleven million times.

I just loved today's show
I couldn’t help tearing up listening to Bill King call that awful, awful moment.
I’m glad he also had a clip from Mel Allen. While I was never a Yankees fan I remember his voice as a toddler. For years i thought you had to sound like that if you wanted to be a baseball broadcaster.
