GOG 2009 #15
Ok, I'm pretty late posting this one, so we'll cut the chit-chat. A's won a couple, lost a couple, didn't look totally hopeless. Interleague play starts up, it's pretty dumb, get to see Danny Haren pitch again, etc.
Links
- Probable pitchers
- Diamondbacks stats
- I haven't graded GOG #14 yet, but I will soon
GOG #15 :: Snakebitten! (28 points possible)
- Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 Arizona
- Predict Haren's IP/ER/K [2 points each] 7 IP, 5 ER, 7 K
- The Diamondbacks offense is averaging only 4.15 runs per game this year, which is even worse than our lovable muppets. How many total runs are scored (by both teams put together) in this clash of formidable offensive titans? [3 points] 26 runs total
- I don't have a good stat to use to measure the number of bone-headed plays that Byrnsie makes in left fields, so we're just going to guess his AB/H/RBI instead [2 points each] 8 AB, 2 H, 2 RBI
- Edgar Gonzalez, the latest member of the Oakland-Sacramento frequent flyers (drivers?) club. How many innings does he last in his start? [3 points] 5 innings
- Orlando Cabrera has a 5 game hitting streak and has been batting .363 with 2 HR over that span. Does he keep the hitting streak going through this series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no, he went 0-5 in game 2
- So far this season, Russ Springer is giving up a somewhat ridiculous 2.08 HR/9IP (his home run per fly ball rate is high at 12.5%, but that's actually pretty close to his percentage from 59 IP with the Astros in 2005; it seems like a big part of the problem is his fly ball percentage of 60.4%, which is 9 points higher than his career average). Does Springer give up a home run against the Dbacks? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
- The Diamondbacks are one of the most infield-pop-up-hittingest teams in baseball, with an infield fly ball percentage of 21.3%, putting them behind only the Mariners and Tigers. How many pop-ups do A's pitchers induce in the series? [3 points] Diamondbacks hit 6 infield flies (includes foul pop-ups)
- Which team gives away the most bases through the combination of errors, wild pitches, balks, and passed balls? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Arizona
- Geren's quick hook :: Does any Oakland starter exceed 100 pitches? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes, Outman throws 106
First pitch is schedule for 7:05, which is just over 7 hours from now. Post your guesses!
Results
Scores were pretty low on this GOG, but maybe that's because you all aren't used to these National League teams. Or maybe it's because there were only 28 possible points this time.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 5.52174 points
- standard deviation = 3.48855 points
- mode = 4, 5, 7, 8, or 9 points
Your Scores
Nice win by gigglingone, who finished 4 points up on all the usual suspects (zaniac75, nevermoor, mikeA). I upped the cutoff for the AVG category to 5 games, but I'll probably keep it there for a while.

I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra

Snakes 'n A's
- Series outcome A’s 2, Arizona 1
- Predict Haren’s IP/ER/K 6IP/3ER/5K
- The Diamondbacks offense is averaging only 4.15 runs per game this year. How many total runs are scored (by both teams put together) 17
- I don’t have a good stat to use to measure the number of bone-headed plays that Byrnsie makes in left fields, so we’re just going to guess his AB/H/RBI instead 14AB/4H/1RBI
- Edgar Gonzalez, the latest member of the Oakland-Sacramento frequent flyers. How many innings does he last in his start? 5IP
- Orlando Cabrera has a 5 game hitting streak and has been batting .363 with 2 HR over that span. Does he keep the hitting streak going through this series? Yes
- So far this season, Russ Springer is giving up a somewhat ridiculous 2.08 HR/9IP. Does Springer give up a home run against the Dbacks? No
- The Diamondbacks are one of the most infield-pop-up-hittingest teams in baseball. How many pop-ups do A’s pitchers induce in the series? 19
- Which team gives away the most bases through the combination of errors, wild pitches, balks, and passed balls? A’s
- Geren’s quick hook :: Does any Oakland starter exceed 100 pitches? No (maybe Gio?!)
