Peavy to White Sox?
Interesting..
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4191562
A move like this certainly shakes up the AL Central. I'm anxious to see what the prospects were. THe article indicates that it's not Beckham.
I'm wondering which prospects the Sox have to get this thing done. Or maybe the Padres were just in pure salary dump mode. I guess we'll see.
It's interesting to note that the White Sox are 5.5 games out and are adding major pieces to their team. The A's are 7 games out and we're all talking about dumping anything of value that we have.
What does everyone think?

A's should jump in for a three-way (not that kind...jeez, dirty minds)
they have the talent and may be able to pry Kouzmanoff or Headley from SD or maybe Fields (or a 3B prospect) from the SOX.

mets need a SS
reyes to DL w/ calf injury…so long crosby
I doubt the mets would want him...
they’d go after Betancourt first – Minaya loves the Latin players

Change his name to Roberto Crosby.

More like Roberta Crosby.

The deal is reported to be for Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, and 2 others
Sounds like a good deal for the Padres.
They get one arm that can go straight into their rotation in Richard.
Poreda goes to AAA to work on his offspeed stuff, then becomes another starter in the rotation. Filling 2 rotation spots cheaply for the next 6 years? Awesome.
I want to know the other two players though. It’s rumored that the two are pitchers, which is interesting since the Sox don’t have much pitching depth.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
Yeah I thought we suppsedly robbed it all in the Swisher trade.

not sure
BP rankings:
poreda 4 star, ranked around 75 in BA top100
Richard 2 star prospect
getz is solid i guess
A’s couldve beat that deal, but of course uncle lew’s wallet is hard to pry open with 32mill in revenue sharing in there

His Agent says he wants to stay in NL
and that’s a good place for him.
I saw on TV some analyst who said Peavy has never come thru in a big game and that there are other pitchers who he would take ahead of him. I wish I could remember who it was. Of course analysts are not experts. Peavy has seen his best years and has thrown a lot of pitches. The NL is the best place for him. Over here he has a plus 4 ERA and that’s too high for a supposed ace (IMO)
If the analyst was named "Phillips", then ignore EVERYTHING he has to say
"Until Holiday comes around, I will refer to him as Coors Light." Ak_A
Peavy is still better than anyone on our staff at the moment, though..
You mean to say tnat you wouldn’t take Peavy in a fair deal if you had the chance?

Depends what you mean by a fair deal.
I wouldn’t want to give up a good number of prospects for him.
The A's simply can't afford Peavy
Tying up that kind of money in a starting pitcher is never wise. The A’s would lose top prospects, and take on exactly the kind of salary they shouldn’t take on.

It wasn't wise for the Padres to do it either.
Look at the predicament they are in. The prospect packages they are rumored to be getting in return for him have been less inspiring with each new iteration. The last thing I would want would be for the A’s to give up several good prospects for him, then have to pay him all that money (subtracting said money from other needs of the club) and then wind up in the current Padres conundrum a few years down on the line when you want/need to trade him.
The more you think about it, the more it sucks to be the Padres right now.
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
word is peavy nixed the trade
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
Looks like Peavy might not OK the deal

nah. peavy not to the white sox
lol
What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.
I don't think I would be all that eager
to leave a cellar dweller in balmy San Diego and go play in Chicago for Ozzie either.

padres agreed to a lousy deal
even if it doesnt go through, A’s could attempt to make a better offer than poreda/richard/broadway/4th prospect…of course it wont happen since the contract issue
i do think mazzaro/braden/eveland could get it done
noooooooooooooo

why not?
mazzaro you have to give up quality
eveland sucks
braden i dont care if he’s a tough guy from stockton, he’s likely the 09 greg smith.
i’d prefer giving up headcases like gio or gallagher but who knows
peavy a legit ace signed through 2013 and yes that definitely beats the offer from white sox that padres have agreed to.

jump in beane
peavy
kouz
for
some combo of 4-5 prospects
i dont buy the payroll issue, he’s signed thriough 2013…A’s have no long term commitments past 2010 when chavez/ellis are goners. uncle lew is collecting revenue sharing too..it would be foolish not to explore it since A’s can beat most offers. if he vetoes, so be it.

He'll nix a deal to the AL, too.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
he might consider a trade to an AL club that he thinks can contend
just a hunch: Texas has lots of prospects too…and they need pitching
Again, I wouldn't like that deal anyway
You lose 4-5 prospects, you add a “highest paid player” for several years at a position known for injury, and you add a good platoon-3Bman who is not the 3Bman of the future.
For whatever it would take to get Peavy and Kouzmanoff, I’d be much more inclined to give up just as much talent to get Chase Headley (skipping Peavy altogether), thereby getting a true 3B prospect who’s major league ready and keeping payroll flexibility to make other moves.

I use the term "prospects" loosely
if you look at the other offers from cubs, white sox, etc. they werent giving up more than 1 top prospect and a couple complimentary guys. i’m not sure if it would be enough but i’d considered a deal centerpiece such as mazzaro then a braden, eveland, plus a 4th player (patterson?). i wouldnt be too upset losing any of them. IMO that beats poreda, richard, getz, etc. Of course peavy could veto it since its an AL team and A’s arent “contenders” at the moment, but its a competitive offer

I wouldn't deal Mazzaro and Braden,
who are a solid major league starter and a solid AAA prospect, both league minimum for years, to get Peavy and his prohibitive salary.

Your living a fantasy baseball dream if you think the A's will land Peavy
Not going to happen. Kouz could be had, but they would probably want a talent SP – maybe a Gallagher or Simmons. My guess is Headley could play 3B again, Kyle Banks (1b) had been playing OF in the minor and could be LF/RF….But I doubt the Pads are going to trade Kouz for anything less since
I already posted this in the DLD
before I found we a whole Peavy thread going. Apologies for posting twice.
Predictions for Chicago with and without Jake Peavy
Would he have made a difference for CWS? The baseball simulation engine at WhatIfSports.com ran the remainder of the season for the White Sux with and without Peavy. They calculated a 6.9% chance of Chicago making the playoffs without Peavy and an 11.4% chance with Peavy. Included is some thoughtful analysis of Peavy’s career to date. Oh, and the A’s showed up in the article:
The White Sox are second-to-last in the AL, relatively much worse than the Padres and trailing only the Oakland A’s for offensive ineptitude in all of baseball.
